Smartphone with a large 6-inch screen and a metal body. Despite the fact that the ZTE nubia Z11 Max has an advanced filling, even at the start of sales in China, it has a reasonable price tag: only about $305. Smartphones with such a large screen are rare, and there is also an excellent balance of price and features. About all its significant chips below, point by point.

Large screen 6" Full HD

With a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels, you will not surprise anyone now; this is becoming the norm for mid-range smartphones with a five-inch screen. But it is quite enough for a clear image at six inches. Traditionally for nubia, a high-quality matrix with rich colors and excellent viewing angles is used here. It's Super AMOLED. It is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3 (2.5D). The thickness of the side frames is only 1.32 mm.

For convenient work with a large smartphone, the screen can be divided into two working parts, in which you can run different applications.

Performance

The ZTE nubia Z11 Max is equipped with 4 GB of RAM and the latest, at the time of release, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 652 processor with 8 performance cores: 4 Cortex-A72 cores clocked at 1.8 GHz and 4 Cortex-A53 cores at 1.4 GHz. The Adreno 510 graphics accelerator operates at a clock frequency of 550 MHz. With such a filling, any game will be strong.

There will be enough space for user files and the installation of a hallway: 64 GB.

Camera Sony IMX298

The main camera uses the latest 16-megapixel Sony IMX298 module with six lenses. Aperture: F/2.2. The lens is protected from scratches by a sapphire crystal. Camera software: NeoVision 5.9.

The wide-angle 80-degree front camera has a resolution of 8 MP.

Quality sound

nubia smartphones are renowned not only for their high-quality screens, but also for their excellent sound when used with the right headphones. The Qualcomm WCD9335 decoder is responsible for 7.1-channel sound in the ZTE nubia Z11 Max.

Fingerprint scanner

The fingerprint scanner is located on the back side. With it, you can not only block your smartphone, but also secure payments, use it as a button for various smartphone functions.

USB Type-C

At the bottom there is a USB Type-C connector, which replaced MicroUSB. It expands the connectivity of external devices as well as increase the speed of data transfer over the cable. The connector itself has such a shape and arrangement of contacts that it can be connected to either end of the cable, and it also does not matter where the bottom is and where the top is.

Battery

The lithium-ion battery has a capacity of 4000 mAh. Thanks to Quick Charge 3.0 technology, it will not take much time to charge it.

Dual SIM

You can install two nano-SIM SIM cards, or one SIM card and a memory card up to 200 GB, since there is one combined tray. 3G and 4G will work in Russia.

will soon enter the international market, and the Z11 Mini will appear in India in October, but nothing is said about the Z11 Max. However, it is the smartphone on the MediaTek Helio processor that will be considered in this review.

The 6-inch tablet is available in two versions and will cost $290 in China. With the Z11 Max, Nubia is going to compete with Huawei and Lenovo tablets. Although ZTE advertised its flagship Axon 7, the Nubia brand is less known. Let's see if the Z11 Max can leave a favorable impression.

Nubia Z11 Max Package Contents

Nubia Z11 Max is positioned as a premium mid-range smartphone. The soft finish of the packaging is used here and the developers paid considerable attention to its design. The outside is completely black with a gold border around the Nubia logo, while the inside of the box is gold. Let her minimalist, matte finish and color combination give her a premium feel.

There is nothing special inside the package itself. There is a smartphone, cable, charger, sticker and user manual. There are no earphones, additional connectors or protective materials.

Components and design

Z11 Max has a high-quality design and minimal bezels around the edges of the screen, which makes the device even more attractive. The metal body has a high-level finish and gives the smartphone a high-end feel. Despite the 6-inch screen, the smartphone fits in your pocket.

The review considered a variant with a gold body, not too bright. There are also silver and gray options. Anodized metal is perfectly processed, there are no bumps and dents. Rounded corners are reminiscent of the appearance of the iPhone smartphone.

Z11 Max has rounded edges along the entire length of the case and it is very comfortable to hold it in your hands. Even despite the large size, it is convenient to operate with one hand, although it is difficult to reach the far edge. The front uses a protective coating of Gorilla Glass 3 with a 2.5D curve, where there are three capacitive buttons on the bottom, an 8MP camera on the top, a distance sensor and ambient light. The capacitive Home button can light up when notifications arrive, or stay on all the time.

At the back is a 13MP camera with dual LED flash, a fingerprint scanner and Nubia branding. There is a 3.5mm headphone jack, a USB type C connector on the bottom. At the bottom, there are speakers hidden by a grille. In general, the device looks great and the build quality is also on top.

Screen

The screen of the device also did not let us down - the AMOLED panel offers rich colors from edge to edge. The resolution of the 6-inch screen is 1920 x 1080, the pixel density is 368 ppi. This is a high-end screen, but those who prefer more natural colors may be disappointed with the color reproduction, since it is somewhat oversaturated with AMOLED.

In everyday use, viewing angles are wide, as is visibility in open spaces. Even under the sun's rays, the contents of the screen can be seen quite well and the colors do not seem washed out, as on most liquid crystal displays. Nubia has a number of additional settings for adjusting color reproduction and color temperature. The standard configuration is closer to the warm spectrum, but those who prefer bright whites can use the calibration settings to find the right level.

Audio and call quality

The Nubia's speaker is on the bottom and can be covered by hand when the phone is held in landscape mode. This is the only problem with this device with sound. The volume and sound quality when talking on the phone at a good level, the microphone also copes with its task.

Using headphones, the user gets clearer sound and louder than the recently released model. The Z11 Max has a Dolby Digital Plus setting that changes the output parameters according to predefined profiles such as music, movies, games or voice. You can also change options manually using the equalizer, volume and dialogue amplifier. This feature works well when watching videos and listening to music.

The Z11 Max has 64 GB of built-in flash memory and a microSD card slot, which, together with the sound quality, makes it suitable for fans of multimedia content on mobile devices.

Camera

The Standard Edition of the Nubia Z11 Max has a 13MP rear camera with f/2.0 aperture, an 8MP front camera with f/2.4 aperture and 80-degree viewing angles. Both cameras do a good job of capturing images in auto mode and have good shutter speeds for a camera in their price range.

Nubia has added quite a few software tricks to the camera app, including a slow motion video mode. The captured photos look great on the AMOLED screen, but the picture is different on other displays, which is a little disappointing.

The quality of photos from the rear camera most often does not cause any complaints, they are clear, bright and saturated. Low-light images leave a mixed impression, depending on luck, but the level of detail drops. Sometimes there is a lot of noise in the photos, sometimes the quality is not bad for posting on Instagram or other social networks.

The 8MP front camera produces blurry images. While it performs well in low light and retains most colors, it could use a bit more clarity.

The video quality from the rear camera in day and night scenes is at a high level. Recorded audio is slightly muffled, which is normal for the price.

Recording video while moving is not disappointing, and the shaking isn't as bad as you might expect. The quality of the video in the end can be considered acceptable.

In general, the cameras can be called good, although the front one lacks clarity.

Software

This section is where the Z11 Max starts to lose its appeal. The smartphone runs on Android 5.1.1 Lollipop two years ago, although the device was introduced a few months ago. It has recent Android security updates, but that's where the software's goodness ends. At the same time, the usual Z11 goes to versions. Nubia does not promise to update the Z11 Max, so you can not rely on a more modern Android.

Nubia has put its own shell on top of the system called Nubia UI 4.0.0, which is similar to MIUI from , only half as good. Her style is inconsistent in different sections of the system, she lacks a sense of completeness. The developers have a lot of work to do in the future when improving the shell if Nubia is going to conquer the international market.

Since the reviewed model was imported from China, there was no support for English (let alone Russian) in the device. The system displayed a lot of error messages and interface tips in Chinese, which were completely incomprehensible. Information about system updates was also displayed in Chinese.

In addition to the language, pre-installed applications (bloatware) like a browser and a search application, which periodically sent notifications, are a minus. Overall, Nubia's shell and app interfaces don't offer the same high level of refinement as MIUI's. When the device is sold in other countries, local applications will most likely be used.

Despite the problematic shell, if you wish, you can find another third-party firmware and switch to it. Otherwise, the system works stably and quickly, although external flaws do not allow us to be satisfied with its capabilities.

Nubia Z11 Max Performance

Nubia Z11 Max is sold in two versions:
  1. 1.8GHz MediaTek Helio P10 octa-core processor with 3GB RAM (Standard Edition)
  2. 1.8GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 652 octa-core processor with 4GB RAM
The review considers the Standard Edition. The processor is enough to work simultaneously with several applications and for games. 3 GB of memory is enough not to close applications in the background and so that they do not slow down the device.

The device turned out to be responsive in any operating mode, there is no need to complain about the speed of moving through the interface. Applications used included Office, OneDrive, Twitter, WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Slack, Clash of Clans, Clash Royale, and Facebook Messenger.

Asphalt 8: Airborne and Dead Trigger 2 were used to test gaming performance. The high frame rate kept them running smoothly, although loading times could have been better. Applications and games did not crash or freeze, which is also facilitated by a sufficient amount of RAM.

In real application, the performance also did not let us down. When working with the dialer, contacts, messenger and calendar, there were no complaints about speed and responsiveness. If the beauty of the user interface does not matter to you, performance provides a comfortable experience.

Battery

The slim body of the Nubia Z11 Max is deceptive as it packs a 4000mAh battery into a 7.4mm thick device and is relatively light in weight. This value is enough for a full day of operation of the device between charges with moderate use and up to 20 hours with heavy use.

Nubia has added a number of optimizations that save battery when the device is not in use, but the disadvantage of this is often the lack of notifications. Even with such saving options turned off, the duration of the work is not bad.

Charging the smartphone is quite fast, although the version with MediaTek does not mention support for fast charging technologies. Charging from 0 to 100% takes approximately 45 minutes. If you use the supplied charger, it will take about an hour and a half.

Conclusion

Nubia Z11 Max tries to be a premium device with good parts, camera, battery and build quality. However, in terms of price-quality ratio, this is not such an attractive purchase as Xiaomi Mi Max, it is also inferior in the software part. To be in demand in the international market, the manufacturer must work on the system and attract the attention of users with high-quality functionality. For starters, it would be nice to upgrade to at least the Marshmallow version.

Xiaomi Mi Max will be the main competitor of Z11 Max and already offers the latest version of Android, a coherent user interface and a lower price of around $245. What's better about the Z11 Max is the rear camera, the AMOLED screen, and the design.

Those who want to get a big screen for watching videos and reading will prefer the 6-inch AMOLED, but the Mi Max has a lot of advantages. The Z11 Max Snapdragon 652 variant looks better than the Mi Max, but is $100 more expensive than the MediaTek version.

If the price were lower or if there were minimal interface customization options, the device would be more attractive. With the Honor Note 8 and Lenovo Phab 2 Pro coming out soon with more features, you can expect the Z11 Max to drop in price. In the meantime, the device feels like a waste of good components, unless you install another firmware yourself. There are not so many of them in English, especially in Russian.

ZTE Nubia Z11 Max price and where to buy
