In this article, we will look at basic settings program, we will go through its individual modules step by step, find out their potential and possible methods of use.

As always, let's start the article with general information. Glary Utilities PC Optimizer has a free and a paid version, the paid one, at the time of this writing, costs about $ 28. We will look at the difference between the paid version and the free one at the very end of the article. The program is compatible with all Windows versions, and for those who wish, and with a phone version on Android. Both 32 bit and 64 bit systems are supported. The program has an installable and portable version. A portable, portable, version is created after installing Glary Utilities. Now let's move on to the interface itself, and consider the main points of the program. In the middle of the window is the system boot timer. If someone, the boot time of his system seems too long, click on the "Startup Manager" button and go to the appropriate section.

But this is already interesting. In the left part of the window, there are programs launched at Windows startup, and in the right - detailed information about them. That is, by selecting with the left button any of your programs on the left, on the right, you will read specific information about it, namely the usefulness and recommendations. Here, with the corresponding button, you can enable / disable autorun. But you shouldn't rush to disable autorun, I doubt that all the items on the left side of the window are clear to you. At first, it would be nice to know what exactly you are going to turn off. And that's just for this, in the area of detailed information, and there is a link "More information". Clicking on which opens a browser window with information collected by Glary Utilities users about this process. Of course, the opinions of users are different, but at least you will have information for thought.

By the way, to speed up the system startup, a certain process does not have to be disabled, sometimes it is quite enough to start it a little later than the system files. To do this, select the program you need in autorun, right click call context menu and select "Insert Delay". The start delay can be set from 30 to 270 seconds.

Getting information about processes is also available in all other tabs: scheduler, plugins, services, and so on.

Here, in the autorun tab, you can leave, for other users, your opinion about the process (link note) and add the program to autorun (the corresponding button below).

The one-click cleaning module in this program is not much different from the competition. So, let's dwell only on its settings, called by clicking on the "options" link.

The first item, registry cleaning, offers to select the scan area, by default all components. In my opinion, it is worth leaving.
The second point, disk recovery - select the disk (s) to check. Here you can check the box for correcting system errors and restoring damaged sectors.
The third point, erasing traces - again offers you a scan area, system, browsers and plugins.
The fourth, erasing temporary files - offers to clean temporary files of the system, browsers and applications. Moreover, as in the previous case, all major browsers are supported, not just IE.
The next item in the Glary Utilities options is the scheduler. But in the free version of the product, the options to erase traces at the end of a session or when shutting down and cleaning in one click do not work.
Below is the ignore list for cleaning the registry, disks, erasing traces, finding duplicate files and empty folders, and fixing shortcuts. And here you can only remove the "applicant" from the list, it is added in the modules.
In the next section, the context menu, you can determine which program items will be displayed in the explorer.

Attention... Please note that in the portable version of the program, the context menu, as well as part of the functionality, is unlikely to work, at least the context menu for sure.

We will not describe the name of the Glary Utilities modules and their purpose in this article. Firstly, this can be read on the official website, and secondly, it has already been described in one of the articles on this blog. So, let's go straight to their functions.

Cleaning modules

This section contains the modules responsible for cleaning the system.

Disk Cleanup module starts scanning when it starts up. If desired, if the default settings do not suit you, check the boxes on the left side of the window and repeat the scan. As it was written above, here you can also exclude certain files and folders from the search by creating an ignore list.
Registry fix module, by and large the same situation as in the previous module. In our opinion, all the points can be noted, especially since deep scanning is not available in the free version.

The module for fixing shortcuts, in extended scan, offers to select scan options, such as the start menu and drives for scanning. You are prompted to remove the incorrect shortcuts or, if possible, correct them.
The module for searching for duplicate files, again, offers to select disks for scanning and, by clicking the "Options" button, define its parameters. That is, choose the extension and criteria like: name, time, file size.
The module for searching for empty folders can be configured both for sections and for a specific folder. Although, in our opinion, it is better not to indulge in this module, at least if you do not know exactly what you are doing.
The context menu manager module, here you can, by ticking the boxes, create your own context menu, although you will not be able to add a program, but you are always welcome to delete it.
The uninstall manager module, in our opinion, duplicates the standard windows manager and uninteresting.

Optimization modules

Startup manager, we have already described above.
Disk defragmentation is perhaps interesting for its settings. Here you can set the size limit for fragments, exceeding which starts defragmentation; set up auto defragmentation; set a schedule for defrag or defrag / optimize and set up defrag on PC startup. And also, by moving large files to the end of the disk, organize disk optimization. And the final menu item is exclusions, where you can add certain files or folders and exclude them from defragmentation.
The memory optimizer allows you to manually free up the memory and clipboard, or set auto-optimization when a certain free memory value is reached.

Registry defragmentation has its own built-in wizard, which will undoubtedly facilitate the work with the module.

Attention... If, nevertheless, something is not clear to you, all modules have a help button. Click on it and get full information about the required module.

Disk check, using this module you can fix system errors and restore damaged sectors on the selected local drives. Do not forget that working with the system disk is possible only when the system is rebooted.
Driver manager, displays all drivers installed in the system. Moreover, drivers are marked in red that are not included in Windows packages, and it is for them that you are invited to do backup... Check the boxes for the required drivers, select a storage location and click the create copy button. In the rest of the tabs, you can delete installed driver, restore the driver from a saved copy and check the driver for updates.
Update software, checks your installed software for new versions.

Security modules

Erase Traces, deletes your personal data in the Windows system and in all popular browsers.
File shredder erases the specified files / folders completely, without the possibility of their recovery. Please note that after erasing files, you need to overwrite the free space.
File recovery, module for recovering deleted files. The search can be performed on local drives or in specific folders, according to specified filters: by name, size, date and file state (from very good to overwritten).
File Encryption, allows you to encrypt files with a password and decrypt them if necessary.

The task manager displays all running processes, with the ability to terminate them, block them and display the security level of the process.

File and folder modules

Disk Space Analyzer, analyzes the disk space used on the disk and displays it in the form of a diagram. In addition, each file or folder found, you can open in Explorer or command line, delete or view its properties.
Splitting and merging files, here you are asked to select a file, specify the path to the destination folder and select the maximum size of the file to be created. The "Split Now" button starts the process of splitting the file itself. The merge files tab works the same way.
Fast search, convenient module for quick search files. What is the convenience of this module. Select the type of file you need on the right side of the window: shortcuts, documents, music, pictures, programmer and video - and immediately on the right side of the window, get the search result. The search is carried out in all sections, on all disks.

Service modules

System Information, this displays information about your operating system, system devices, memory, disks, display, network and other devices.
Registry backup, creates a copy of your registry. To do this, simply indicate the path to the location of its storage, give it a name and click the "Save" button.
Registry recovery is, one might say, the second part of the previous module. The actions are similar, only there you save the file, and here you open it.
System file recovery is used to find and then restore damaged system files. Works from the console.

And here is the second - the only possibility in Glary Utilities to maintain the state of the system without user intervention. True, there is also a function for optimizing RAM in real time, but it works in both editions of the product.

Many cleaning programs and Windows optimization have long ceased to perform only these functions. Even the once minimalistic cleaner can already offer disk analysis and advanced startup management capabilities. The functionality of many programs for servicing the operating system is often represented not only by options that are absent in the system, but also by dubbing those available in Windows, however, sophisticatedly hidden from ordinary users. Additional modules in optimizer cleaners, as a rule, are built-in functions of autorun, system recovery, disk defragmentation, system task scheduler, etc. Access to regular system services from a single ordered interface of one program is a much more interesting alternative than looking for each utility separately, scattered around the nooks of the system. In the middle of the window, the operating system boot time is indicated, the speed of the boot process is assessed, and it is suggested to immediately go to the program startup management section using the “Startup Manager” button to remove programs that are unnecessary at system startup.

A set of functions required for standard computer hygiene, according to the Glary Utilities developers, is located in the second tab of the 1-Click program window. This set includes functions for cleaning the system registry, fixing shortcuts, removing spyware, restoring a disk, destroying traces of being on the computer and on the Internet ("Privacy"), erasing temporary files. The options "Privacy" and "Disk recovery" are not selected by default by the program. In our case, we will omit the privacy item, since there is no need to destroy traces of the Internet. The cache will be deleted as part of the "Erase temporary files" function, but there is no need to delete logins and passwords. But we will not give up the function of disk recovery. By the way, it can hardly be called a Must Have function in the name of maintaining computer hygiene, and it is designed more for solving one-time problems. We press the green button "Find problems".

The program will search for problems on the computer, and they can be viewed in separate tabbed windows opposite each of the functions.

In these inset windows, you can uncheck individual items so that they are not cleaned, for example, if there is no need to clean the system basket yet, or it may become necessary to work with the history of a particular browser.

Before pressing the button to fix the problems found in the system, you can "walk" through the additional options of the program and, possibly, use some of them.

After completing all the cleaning settings, we proceed, in fact, to it itself. We press the green button "Fix".

Before considering the program modules section, a small lyrical digression: if you do not like the preset dirty blue color of the Glary Utilities shell, you can easily change it to another color or background at the top of the window.

In the section-tab of the program "Modules" is compactly presented, in fact, everything that the program is capable of, except for express cleaning of the system. Here are collected separate small utilities for solving various tasks when working with a computer. This is working with the system registry, working with disk space, deleting malware, destruction of traces of work on the computer, destruction of files without the possibility of recovery, management of the system and its individual functions, disk space analyzer, work with drivers, uninstaller, check for new versions of programs installed on the computer, as well as other useful utilities and commands for starting regular Windows services ...

At the bottom of the program window - in the dock - individual visual buttons of the program modules are presented. The buttons of the most used functions of the program were initially added to the dock, access to the rest of the buttons is opened from the drop-down list of the dock.

There are only two tweaks in the Glary Utilities program:

As you can see, these are not the most best offers for enthusiasts who like to customize the system according to their preferences using special third-party software - tweaker programs. There are three main tabs at the top of the program window: State, 1-Click, Modules... Using the drop-down menu in the upper right part of the window, you can configure the main parameters of the program, view, get help, visit the developer's website, and also roll back to the previous state of the operating system.

But we are actually only interested in two tabs - 1-Click and Modules... As you may have guessed, all the optimizing actions can be performed immediately by checking the boxes in the right places. A great choice for lazy or novice users. Let's consider the possibilities of the Modules tab in more detail.

The cleaning block includes the following 4 functions:
1. Cleaning disks. Allows you to safely remove temporary and obsolete files from your computer
2. Cleaning the registry. Allows you to find and delete obsolete registry entries, broken keys.
3. Correction of shortcuts. Using this function, you can fix and delete all old shortcuts left in the system after uninstalling applications and deleting any files.
4. The uninstall manager will help you to remove unnecessary applications in a better quality.

The next Optimization block also has four functions. Using their capabilities, you can customize the context menu, check the state of RAM, compress and defragment, and manage startup objects.

You need to be careful with the latter - uncheck the autoload checkbox only if you are sure that disabling the startup with Windows applications will not affect the operation of the operating system or other programs.

Through the Security block, you can delete temporary Internet files, clear cookies, delete files and folders beyond recovery, and, on the contrary, restore accidentally deleted files from the recycle bin. If you want to protect information on your computer and make it inaccessible to other users, just encrypt desired file by setting a password on it.

Block, Files and folders contains 4 functions.
1. Using the Disk Analysis function, you can get detailed information about all folders and files (including system ones), file extension and the number of free space on hard drives.
2. Search for duplicates. Lets check file system on duplicate files and, if necessary, delete unnecessary ones.
3. A similar method is used when searching for empty directories. It doesn't hurt to be careful here as well, as some applications can create empty folders for certain purposes, and therefore it is better for nothing to remove all the pacifiers in a row and indiscriminately.
4. Quite an interesting and useful function Cutting and merging files will come in handy in case you need to save a large file in a limited space, for example, on a USB flash drive or optical disk. Such a file can be cut into two or more parts and burned to separate media, and then, if necessary, it is also easy to put them together on a hard disk.

Finally, the block Service intended for display detailed information about the system, contains a simple built-in for managing current processes, a settings assistant Internet Explorer, as well as a function providing direct access to some system utilities Windows.

Optimizing the list of programs launched at Windows startup immediately significantly speeds up the computer, but if you want to get the most efficient operation of it, then go through the rest of the program menu items: Cleaning, Optimization, Security, Files and folders, Service - Fig. 5.

You will probably find a lot of junk that you can and should remove: empty folders, duplicate files, broken shortcuts, old programs that you no longer need, and other things that cause nostalgia, but are completely useless.

Besides, Glary utilities will neatly fix registry errors ( Cleanup - Registry Fix), clean the hard drive ( Optimization - Disk Cleanup) and defragment it ( Optimization - Disk Defragmenter), will analyze the state of the drivers and installed programs for their relevance, that is, it will check that you have the most recent versions installed ( Optimization - Software Updates). The latter, of course, is only possible when the Internet is connected.

To optimize the computer's RAM, I recommend choosing the item Memory optimization, go to section Options and install Auto optimization... This will save you from the annoying warning "There is not enough memory in the system ..." that appears when a large number of programs are running at the same time. At the same time, a traffic light with a green eye will appear in the notification panel on the Desktop (where the clock is), when you hover over which, the amount of memory used is shown. This is more convenient than using the task manager, and in addition, the red traffic light will warn you in time when the memory is full.
