Please note: In some regions, there may be restrictions on the use of some frequencies! Check your local laws carefully. If necessary, register the transceiver (radio station) in accordance with the established procedure!
The manufacturer and the seller are not responsible for the use of the radio station by the buyer for other purposes or in violation of the established norms!

Good day, citizens! So, finally, my hands reached the writing of this post.
I will say right away that I have been using this radio transceiver for more than a year, and quite recently I received new ones, ordered by my good friend, transceivers of the same brand and series. Therefore, it turned out to make some comparison of the old (one of the first) and new versions of the transceiver.

I'll start the review with what kind of device it is.
Standard equipment includes a transceiver, battery, strap, antenna, belt clip, charging cup, power supply.

Baofeng UV-B5 is a dual-band transceiver from a Chinese company. With quite standard characteristics for this type of transceiver:

Frequency range: 136.00-174.00 MHz 400.00- 470.00MHz
Memory Channels: 99
Frequency step: 2.5 / 5 / 6.25 / 10 / 12.5 / 20 / 25KHz
Output power: 5W
Battery capacity: 2000 mAh
Dimensions: 116x58x 36 mm (Excluded Antenna)

Let's move on to the exterior. in all photos the old version is on the left, the new one is on the right.

The body is made very well, made of high quality plastic. After a year of operation in airsoft conditions, backlash and creaks were not noticed in the panels. There were also several cases of falling into the rain, which did not affect the operation of the device in any way.
The side buttons are moderately hard, there are small anti-slip inserts on the sides.

The plug for audio connectors on the right side is well made, the connectors themselves look good after at least a year of "violence".

The strap attachment is a plastic "loop" in the antenna area. There is a hole on the belt clip, most likely for a strap, but I use it to hang the radio on hooks, nails and other devices. In general, it is comfortable in the hand.

The red stripe on the volume control knob was only on old versions of the transceiver, and on the new one there is a black plug (who knows why this change happened).

After turning on the radio, we hear a welcoming "Welcome!" Unfortunately in old version On these transceivers, the cheer does not turn off, and the backlight glows a dull blue-green tint. By the way, one interesting nuance was noticed during the operation: when the radio is discharged, it publishes a greeting “Welcome” and is cut off. Personally, I use this as a kind of low battery indicator.

The battery is a different story. This transceiver is equipped with a 2000 flywheel Li-Po battery.

After one of the batteries decided to die, I performed an autopsy. Inside, an assembly of two batteries was found connected in series through a protection board against short-circuit and overcharging / overdischarging (which, as it later turned out, also burned out). After several cycles on the "smart charge", it turned out that the total capacity of this assembly is only 1000 mAh, which is two times lower than the declared one. On newer versions of the transceiver, the story is the same. When treating a "dead" battery, it turned out that without a protection board, the radio works an hour longer on average without harming the battery cells.
Tell him especially about the charging glass, except in new version the rectifier is placed in a separate power supply unit that is connected to the glass through a standard power connector. Perhaps this was done in order to be able to connect the glass to the car's cigarette lighter and charge the radio.

By the way, in old charging cups, a battery overcharge protection module is built into the board, so the absence of a protection board in the battery is not required, although it can be purchased on the same Aliexpress for 4 evergreen dollars. By the way, the glass has an undocumented feature: if you put a switched off radio in a disconnected glass, the glass will shine with a green LED all night long, dropping the battery.
The communication range was checked different ways... In the city it is about one and a half kilometers, in the field about 9 km. In the car, the distance is about 2-3 km, but you can increase it by installing the antenna on the roof, or by sticking it out the window when driving.
All in all, the transceiver is excellent. It collects minimum noise, excellent range, strong body. Of the changes for the year, only worn-out buttons can be noted, however, they are freely sold in 409shop.

PS: We read the title of the topic gentlemen ... this is not a comparison of 5R and B5, but a brief overview on B5 and a comparison of a one-year-old radie with a new one. The price is for 1 piece for the current day. I bought it as a share, and with a $ 5 coupon it was even cheaper =)

I plan to buy +35 Add to favourites I liked the review +24 +52

Sobsno, I wanted to create a topic for discussing this subject. Below is a translation of the station overview from PD0AC / RA1QCW

When I first saw Baofeng UV-B5I was a little more interested than usual. Liked appearance, nothing superfluous, the presence of a knob. I could never get used to switching frequencies and channels with buttons, the presence of a knob suggested a solution to this issue. There is a similar radio station - Baofeng UV-B6. Technically they are identical, but the latter has a flashlight, although there is no panic button (is it necessary?) And a knob. It's up to you to choose.
Otherwise, I did not expect anything special from Baofeng UV-B5 and UV-B6: not ideal, but for their money, with their pros and cons, they are quite usable. One of the downsides is the use of a DSP and RDA chip. RDA chips are considered new technology... They are cheap. But the implementation is far from perfect. Most radios lacked a proper RF path and generated a lot of interference. Wouxun KG-UVD1P and Quansheng TG-UV2 are familiar exceptions, but the price is also not the lowest. Get what you pay for.
Something has changed. When I turned on the Baofeng UV-B5, it became clear that the Chinese engineers heard our calls and changed the RF path. First of all, the signal from our local repeater was not lost while I was moving around the house, Wouxun and Quansheng were unable to do this. Only my expensive monobands Yaesu VX-177 and IC-U82 are capable of this. Secondly, the signal was not lost outside the house. This is not something I can take for granted. For many reasons my QTH is known for having intermods. Many radio stations are immediately overloaded, which does not allow receiving a signal 70 centimeters lower than 9 + 20 S-meter.

Inspection and impressions.
If we compare the square UV-5R with UV-B5, the latter is more rounded and fits better in the hand. It is similar to the Baofeng BF-666S / 777S / 888S series, although they have design features. Same size, same battery shape and same belt clip. But the batteries are not interchangeable, there is also a small problem with the belt clip - screws of different lengths are used to fasten them.
On the left we will find three keys, but only two of them are functional: PTT and monitor. When both of these keys are pressed, a 1750Hz tone is transmitted. The third key on the UV-B5 is not used. On the UV-B6, it controls an LED flashlight. Baofeng could have used this key to turn on the backlight, but they didn't. It's a pity. On the right is a compatible Kenwood connector for connecting a speaker / microphone or programming cable. Software UV-B5 and UV-B6 work fine out of the box, but it's worth pressing the red button to change the language from Chinese to English.
Above is a knob that is used to switch between frequencies, channels, menus and basic parameters. The on / off switch and volume control is on the right. When the volume is turned down to the minimum, you can still hear the beep, but you need to hold the speaker to your ear to hear.
The native antenna (SMA-Female) is quite solid and well made. When replaced with a Nagoya NA-701 antenna, the difference is not felt. There is no need to buy a replacement for your own antenna.

Battery.
The batteries indicate a capacity of 2000mAh, but I have no way to check these figures. As usual with Li-Ion batteries, you must discharge and charge at least three times in a row to achieve maximum power. The battery can then be charged at any time. A smart charger is included. When the battery is completely discharged, the charging time is 5 hours.

Memory
Baofeng UV-B5 has 99 frequency recording cells. Plus 16 more channels for FM broadcast stations. You can overwrite memory locations without having to delete them first.

Instructions
The manuals that come with Baofeng have a reputation for being unfinished and impossible to understand. But in fact, everything is pretty decent: all the features, menus and parameters are described in detail. No funny Sino-English translations, just minor grammar problems. The manual is not without errors, some things are repeated twice on one page. And according to the instructions, you must hold the Monitor button to change the volume, although this is not the case.

UV-B5 control and programming
In VFO mode, you simply enter the frequencies you want. Unlike Baofeng UV-5R there is no round-off error when the input frequency does not end in 0 or 5. This happens in UV-5R when step 12.5 or 6.25 is set. In UV-B5, the frequency is predicted correctly without having to enter the last digit.
Unlike many other radios, the UV-B5 can be programmed without connecting to a computer, including adding a channel description and setting ANI codes. But all the same, the description cannot be more than 5 characters. Due to the fact that many callsigns have six digits, this is not very convenient. Programming via a computer is not difficult and is done in the old way.

Transmitter
Power Output: Nothing fancy, you can switch between High and Low modes. The measurements were taken with a fully charged battery at 145MHz and 435MHz, respectively.

Power Output VHF:
High: 4.0 Watts
Low: 1.8 Watts

Power Output UHF:
High: 2.9 Watts
Low: 1.7 Watts
This is less than stated, as in UV-5R but quite normal.
Transmitter: Excellent reports. The modulation is loud, bright and distortion-free.

Spectral analysis:
Looks good, 2nd order harmonic suppression -59dBm at VHF, -53dBm at UHF.
