How do I subscribe to RSS? Email subscription or RSS? Using Gmail to Read RSS Feeds How to Receive RSS Updates to E-mail

As planned, I am starting to register on different sites in search of additional orders for web development. The first in the list of relevant projects for review was Weblancer.net (detailed). I will publish a little later detailed overview, and today I will introduce you to the solution of one problem, which will come in handy when working with it. It will be about receiving a feed of vacancies (tasks) from RSS to mail. Moreover, we will filter applications by the keyword we need.

In principle, updates to RSS feeds can be tracked in different ways: someone adds a feed to bookmarks, someone uses a special reader program, plus there are different services on the Internet for receiving RSS to Email:

  • Feedmyinbox.com
  • Blogtrottr.com
  • Zapier.com
  • Ifttt.com

There are probably other projects, but these should be enough. The first two sites have the classic functionality of sending RSS to mail, where you just specify the address of the RSS channel and your email. The last couple works on a slightly different principle, which is exactly what we need.

Earlier in the blog, I have already given several examples of use, including sending SMS when ordering goods in a store. The same project will help to receive RSS to the mail with the addition of a special filter (key phrase).

Algorithm for setting up RSS to mail via IFTTT

The first step is to register on the IFTTT website. Then in the top menu, select the item "My Applets", and then click on the link "New Applet" to create a new applet (previously it was called recipes).

The very principle of the service is that, firstly, you define a certain condition under which your applet will be triggered, and secondly, you indicate what action should eventually take place.

The whole process takes 6 steps:

1. Selecting a service for a trigger. Click on the "this" button (see the picture above), a list of different options will open in a new tab, we need RSS.

2. Trigger definition (trigger conditions). There are 2 options for RSS feed:

We select the second item "New feed item matches", that is, the appearance of a new item in the RSS feed that would match the keyword or phrase you specified. Click on this trigger, and the service will ask you to fill in the appropriate settings:

The feed for new orders / vacancies Weblancer.net is located at the following address (if the value is not triggered, there may be a new RSS on the site):

https://www.weblancer.net/rss/jobs.rss

As keyword I personally use wordpress because I need all orders related to this CMS system. Then click "Create trigger".

3. We pass to the choice of action - the button "that". We take Email as a service for the implementation of the task.

4. For mail, there is only one option - sending a message. The service generates a letter in HTML format, and also supports the insertion of links and pictures.

5. At the penultimate step, you will need to fill in the parameters of the mail message - select the subject of the letter (Subject) and content (Body).

You can write plain text as values or specify special parameters from the Ingredient block. With their help, you can send various information from RSS to the mail: the title of the post from the feed, its text, author, link, etc. When done click on the "Creater action".

6. At the last step, you will need to check all the parameters of the applet and finish working on it - the "Finish" button.

After creation, all applets go to the "My Applets" section. There you can temporarily disable them or delete them. As for our task with receiving RSS to mail from Weblancer, in the end I receive the following letters:

The advantages of the method:

  • It makes no sense to monitor the list of jobs on Weblancer.
  • I get only the information I need, while the exchange's RSS includes tasks from all categories.
  • If you are engaged in different types of activities, not just WordPress development, then you can create several applets.
  • It's relatively fast (especially when Gmail new email notifications are set up).

By the way, there is still a certain delay when receiving RSS to mail (less than an hour), as I understand it, due to the technology itself or the frequency of reading the feed by the IFTTT service. Therefore, if you want to be the very first performer, you either need to monitor the site constantly, or look for alternative solutions - perhaps the data will come through the RSS reader faster. But for me personally, speed is not critical + it is convenient to receive vacancies in Gmail along with other important messages.

If you know any other interesting options for sending RSS to mail, tell us about them in the comments.

Good afternoon, dear blog readers!

A few days ago a message came to my mail with a request to answer the question: "How to subscribe to RSS?" At first I just wanted to answer the letter, explaining what, how and where. But soon after a little correspondence with this person, I realized that it would be better to write an article in which to show step by step the whole process of subscribing to RSS or E-mail.

This topic has already been raised thousands of times on the Internet. On the topic: "How to subscribe to RSS, E-mail, using readers, programs, etc.?" hundreds of articles have been written, but they are all incomplete or not understandable.

Based on all of the above, I want to make my own little manual :-)

Sit back. Make yourself some tea or coffee and a bun. Well, get ready, in a few minutes you will learn what rss is and learn how to use this technology.

1) What is RSS?
2) How to subscribe to rss?
3) How to receive rss updates by e-mail?

As well as:
4) Subscribing to rss using Readers (Google, Yandex.Lenta)
5) Subscribe to RSS using special programs
6) Pros and cons of a specific subscription form

What is RSS?

Rss Is a "special technology" through which information is transmitted on the NETWORK. In other words, this is one of the most convenient ways to get latest updates favorite site or blog.

RSS helps to quickly and efficiently receive updates, including mine. In general, almost all sites and blogs have their own rss feed.

I'm sure most of the readers of this post follow multiple sites (blogs) for updates. Of course, if these are just a few pieces, then there is nothing to say. Going through 2-3 blogs will not be difficult for anyone.

But what about 20-30 blogs?

This is already a little problematic. Although no, no problem. It just takes a lot of time. And this is not good. We need to reduce the time spent on the Internet :-)

By the way, for those who do not have "unlimited" Internet, RSS is more useful than ever, because thanks to this technology, you do not need to visit blogs (sites) to check their updates. So using RSS is very convenient!

Pros of RSS subscription

  • Get instant updates on your favorite blogs and sites
  • No need to visit all your favorite sites and blogs to check for updates
  • Shortening time

There is nothing to say about the minuses, since there are none (although for someone it may be).

What is better RSS or Email subscription?

For me, there are no such significant differences, except that updates are received by e-mail with a delay. For some, this is important, but for me not very much.

I use both E-mail and RSS subscriptions. For reading RSS, I choose Yandex.Subscriptions, since you can combine the use of mail with viewing updates of various sites and blogs.

So, you already understood that RSS subscriptions outperform email subscriptions in terms of speed. Also, RSS subscriptions have a slightly different form of reading compared to E-mail. You will be convinced of this by reading the article to the end.

How to receive RSS updates by e-mail?

Let's start with the simplest form of subscription (E-mail). You have already encountered it on other sites and blogs. Maybe they just didn't notice, or maybe they didn't know. Any subscription to e-mail filed with Feedburner, which is owned by Gaucher (Google).

This service is used by almost all bloggers, although recently I have noticed minor problems with the service.

P.S. They say that Gosha scored on Feedburner and that he will soon disappear, but until this happens, we are learning to subscribe to E-mail.

What does the email subscription form look like?

Let's look at the whole process of subscribing to E-mail using the example of my subscription form.

1) First, enter your E-mail in a special field in the subscription form:

2) Next, click on the "OK" button or press the "Enter" key

3) Then a new window opens, where in a special field you need to enter characters confirming that you are not a robot (this is necessary to fight against spam)

5) If everything is done correctly, the following window should appear:

6) Now you need to confirm your e-mail. This is necessary in order to prove that this e-mail belongs to you.

To confirm the e-mail, we check the mail and look for a letter:

OK it's all over Now! Email subscription confirmed. This means that now you will always be up to date with the latest events!

Subscribing to RSS using Google Reader and Yandex.Subscriptions

By the way, with the help of Readers it is easier to subscribe to Rss... You will be convinced of this further.

Let's start with Google reader

1) Go to the main page of the reader.

  • If you have an account on any of Google services, then you do not need to start a new one.
  • If you don't have account, register. Registration will take about 5-10 minutes.

On the this moment there are no subscriptions in the Reader. Next, I'll show you how to subscribe to RSS using my blog example.

4) Move the cursor over the inscription "Subscriptions" in the left sidebar.

5) Click on the button that appears on the right and select an action. In our case, "Add a new subscription ..."

6) If everything is done correctly, then a pop-up window should appear in which you need to enter the address of the site or blog:

9) Click on any Subscribe button. All these feeds are one RSS feed.

10) Well that's it! You are subscribed to my RSS feed. Now you will always receive prompt updates to my blog!

Subscribing to RSS using Yandex. Subscriptions

I find that using Yandex.Subscriptions is easier and more convenient than using Google Reader, since Ya.P. merged with Yandex mail. Those. checking your mail, you can check for updates on your favorite sites and blogs.

So, let's take a look at the RSS subscription process using my blog as an example.

1) Open Yandex.Mail.

P.S. if you don't have a Yandex account yet,.

4) It remains to enter the address of the site or blog and click on "Subscribe"

OK it's all over Now! Subscribed! I don't think you had any problems.

On this I will probably end the post. Yes, I almost forgot, you can subscribe to RSS using special Reader programs:

  • FeedDemon
  • RSS Reader
  • Abilon
  • Newz crawler

I will not write about how to use them, since they are simple and intuitive. I recommend using FeedDemon as it has more features than other programs.

The RSS format is a fairly convenient way to subscribe to updates from your favorite blogs. Previously, I used Google Reader to read RSS feeds, but, alas, the company has closed this convenient service. Although, of course, now there are many other alternative projects, including Yandex.Lenta. Email has always been one of the options for subscribing to an RSS feed. Perhaps for most users it is even more convenient, understandable and accessible (due to the regular use of mail). Unfortunately, not all blog authors and website owners provide the ability to send RSS to Email.

Recently I examined the situation from the point of view of a webmaster and described setting up a mailing list via Feedburner. Today we'll talk about users - how to subscribe to RSS by Email, if the site does not have such an opportunity? Earlier, I remember, the RSS2Email project was quite active in Runet, but now it is completely dead. The previously popular FeedMyInbox also became somehow buggy + they sent a notification by mail about the termination of their work. Fortunately, there is a way out!

The main and only task of the Blogtrottr service is to send news from RSS feeds to your Email. At the same time, the main features of Blogtrottr:

  • Used by PubSubHubbub to receive notification as quickly as possible.
  • Setting the time for sending notifications - immediately, within a few hours, or the formation of a digest for the day.
  • Configuring the subject line of letters. Getting only the information you need - headings, texts.
  • Email-friendliness - both HTML and Plain Text versions are sent.
  • Import-export of the list of subscriptions via OPML file.
  • Support for thumbnails and files.
  • Customizable header-only email templates or notifications.

In order to organize a subscription through the Blogtrottr service on home page enter the RSS feed address, your Email, and also choose how often you want to receive emails. Then click on the "Feed Me" button.

This is a "script" for sending RSS notifications to mail. You need to click on the "Start Using This" link, after which you get to the first step of the setup.

Select in the left field "New item in feed", and in the right - "Send Outbound Email". You, in fact, set the nature of the required action, all other settings - the mail address and RSS feeds are set further. There, I remember, it will be possible to choose which data to send from RSS, etc. That is, the setting is flexible enough.

To summarize, both services work well. Once I set up Blogtrottr and Zapier, I get notified when the desired RSS feed is updated. If you compare the 2 projects, then Zapier sends emails faster (almost instantly), but Blogtrottr is easier to configure. In addition, you need to take into account that Zapier has a limit on the number of actions.

Read RSS Feeds- an intimate activity, and everyone chooses for himself the way in which he does it. You can usually read RSS in aggregator programs, in browsers and various services. But sometimes it is much more convenient - receive notifications of updates by mail.

I have a huge number of RSS feeds added to Feedreader, which hasn't been updated since ancient times, but is just gorgeous: free, feature-rich, simple and easy to use. However, some, like the most valuable tapes I have added to Chrome browser using the cool Slick RSS plugin - very handy too.

But there is a fly in the ointment in any barrel of goodies. These RSS feeds, constantly monitored by programs, slow down and google browser Chrome, and computer work in general. Therefore, some feeds, the update of which I do not need to track in real time, but can be read (or skipped) and in the evening over a cup of tea, I decided to transfer to email subscriptions.

Most advanced blogs and sites use Google's Feedburner to burn their feeds, subscribe, export and do many more wonderful things. Normal subscriptions to Feedbuern accounts include a subscription form not only for RSS programs and services, but also for mail. For example, on the page of Terekhov's blog, at the bottom right there is an envelope icon and a link to subscribe.

And if you look at another blog from the same SEO below, the SeoProfy blog, we will not see such a link there. Just a suggestion to choose the right RSS reader for us.

If you open the “Choose Your Reader” list, you can see a lot of services ... none of which interests me. There is no email subscription with RSS either.

A quick search led me to two services that are most praised and that allow you to receive blog updates by mail (email), directly from the RSS feed: and.

In principle, both services are configured in the same way (you can also register): we indicate the address of the site or RSS feed, write our own mailing address and select the period for sending notifications (in real time, once a day, etc.).

Today I already received a letter with a new article that appeared on the SeoProfy blog.

Such are the services and such are the things. But these are the girls running around with ribbons.

In the photos: Vanessa Essler, Italian actress and fashion model.

The debate and speculation surrounding Google's shutdown of its RSS feed continues unabated. Some are looking for a worthy alternative, others expect new services to appear amid the excitement.

I previously published an article that the service. After reading this article, you will learn how to read RSS feed using Gmail.

Unusual ideas can also be used to solve the problem. If you like fresh and non-standard solutions, then it is worth trying to set up your mail service to receive and read news from an RSS feed. This approach has already been used earlier in some mailers ah, now you can configure any of the mail services to read the feed: Gmail, mail.ru, yandex.ru and others. Of course, there may be some minor complications when setting up, but in general the idea of setting up and using is the same.

Step 1: forwarding feed content to your inbox

To configure mail to interact with RSS feeds, you need to enter feeds using external services. To do this, you can use Pipes, Blogtrottr, IFTTT or other services. Take Blogtrottr as an example - this service has many different features besides the most useful one for our business - directing feed content to the mailbox.

We register and add an OPML file with all the addresses of your subscriptions. Then you can adjust the refresh rate, enable filters, change the name. By the way, the update frequency is important, since the service updates RSS feeds by default, depending on technical capabilities, that is, either in real time or once an hour. This is usually enough. Well, if there is no need for such a frequency of updates, then you can set a different interval: two, four, six twelve hours or once a day.

Step 2. Install the filter.

Installing a filter is mandatory in this case, since after registering and adding feeds, a lot of messages will come to your mailbox, many of which are not needed. Therefore, we set up filters for your mail service. For example, filters work very well in Gmail and when you customize them to your requirements, you will get a very convenient reader, comparable in comfort to Google reader. The first thing that comes to mind: creating folders with names by topics of interest or by news sources. There are many ideas for filtering and folder distribution.

By the way, Gmail is a very advanced service, which is why there are so many options for using this service. It's a pity that Gmail can't handle SMS messages. If you need SMS distribution, then you can order this service on the above website.

After setting up the internal filters of the mail service, you will see all the news in one menu, which can be collapsed so that it does not take up much space on the screen. For example, if you have Gmail, you can configure the client in such a way that the received news is not displayed in the "Inbox" folder, but is immediately sent to the appropriate folders, without mixing with letters and messages.

It makes no sense to consider the process of setting up filters more precisely - everyone has their own mail client and their own ideas for distributing information.

Step 3. Sort the received information.

So, after configuring and filtering, we can read the usual information from the RSS feed. Now, looking at the information, you can distribute it depending on its importance: send some to the "Marked" or "Important", others to the trash. If you need to add notes or your thoughts on this or that information, you just need to click "Reply" and enter the text. Now, the information will always be associated with the comment and will be in the "Drafts" folder (for Gmail and similar services).

If you set up sorting correctly, it will save you a lot of time. And time is money. By the way, you can earn good money in.

By the way, for a thorough understanding of sorting emails in Gmail, I recommend watching this video.

Step 4. We use additional features.

Mail clients like Gmail or Yandex have excellent additional features related to other services of these companies. If you need to share the news with your friends, Gtalk will help, if you receive news of an interesting event and want to create a reminder, add it to your Google calendar, if you need to process the information, use the Google task manager.

For wider use of mailer services, you need to spend a little time exploring all the possibilities of related services. To summarize this non-standard use of Gmail: this idea has enough positive aspects and few negative ones. Among the advantages of using: comfortable use thanks to filtering and customization settings, there is no need to switch from one site or service to another, there are many opportunities thanks to related services, and for Google and others major services, this is also interaction with social media or popular applications. In addition, it is possible to work with mobile devices, the choice of page design. Well, of course, consistency - it's absolutely incredible that Google would get rid of Gmail.

There are not many disadvantages: firstly, if the setting is unsuccessful, letters and news will be mixed, which will lead to an increase in confusion with mailbox and secondly, for some users such use of the service is simply unusual. The rest is good decision the issue of replacing Google reader, without any special problems and technical difficulties.
