Set a password for the computer. How to put a password on a computer with any version of Windows Setting a password on a windows 7 computer

Information stored on laptop drives is at greater risk of leakage than on home desktop PCs. After all, many owners carry a mobile computer with them and sometimes leave it without control. To prevent data from falling into the wrong hands, it must be protected. The easiest way to do this is with a password.

Let's talk about how to put a password on a laptop and what protection method will be best for you.

Three lines of laptop password protection

The initial level of protection is setting a password for access to the OS. Allows you to hide the contents of the disk from curious "dummies", but not from those who are seriously aimed at stealing data.

The next, more reliable way is to set a password on the laptop's BIOS. To crack it, the attacker will have to work very hard.

The maximum level of protection is provided by setting a password on the hard drive. But it is better not to use this option unless absolutely necessary. Read on to find out why.

Password protection in Windows

What is good

Simplicity and security.

What is bad

Low reliability. Breaks easily. Not suitable for protecting sensitive information.

Who suits

Those who want to protect personal files from access by others, such as family members or colleagues.

How to install in Windows 7

To set a password for a Windows 7 account, just follow 3 steps:

  • Open the Windows Control Panel and go to the "User Accounts" section.

  • Click "Create your account password".

  • In the next window, fill in the fields shown below: enter the passphrase, its confirmation and a reminder hint. The last one is not required. Save the setting and reboot.

Now every time you turn on your computer, Windows will require you to authenticate.

How to install in Windows 8-10

For the first time, Windows 8 users were able to use not only a character password, but also a graphic password to log in to the system. The latter, if it is well thought out, is no less reliable than a text one, but it is much easier to remember.

In Windows 10, in addition to password protection, the "Pin code" and "Windows Hello" functions appeared. A PIN is a short combination of numbers that a user can enter in place of their Microsoft account password. According to the developers, this is done to simplify the login for those who use the computer in a secure environment, for example, only at home.

The Windows Hello feature is relatively new. Its essence lies in the recognition by the system of a fingerprint, face or iris of the user's eye. It is convenient, but it does not work on all devices and is currently not fully debugged.

The section for managing all types of passwords in the "eight" and "ten" is located in the "Settings" application. In Windows 10, it opens through the Start menu (gear-shaped button).

In Windows 8 (8.1), for this you need to call the charms bar, click "Settings" and then "Change computer settings".

Further actions on both systems are very similar, so we will consider them only using the example of Windows 10.

While in the "Settings" application, open the "Login Options" section, select the desired type of password and click "Add".

  • To create a text password for your account, open the "Password" subsection. Enter the passphrase, confirmation and hint in the appropriate field.

Pin-code and picture password are available only for Microsoft account (under the local administrator, these functions are inactive).

  • To set a PIN code (in Windows 10), enter a few numbers in the indicated fields, confirm them, and click OK to save. Unlike a Microsoft online account, the pin will only work on that device.

  • To create a picture password, upload any picture to the app. Confirm your consent to use this picture when creating your password. After that, draw on the image some simple shapes that are easy for you to remember, and repeat the drawing 3 times.

BIOS and disk password protection

What is good

It has a high resistance to cracking. Not only protects the entry into the operating system, but also prevents changes to BIOS settings (including preventing the laptop from booting from another media).

What is bad

If you forget your password, it is extremely difficult to access protected media. Sometimes it's impossible.

Who suits

Those who store especially valuable data on a laptop.

What is the feature

Unlike desktop PCs, the BIOS password on most laptops cannot be reset by disconnecting the battery from the flash memory where the BIOS microcode with all the settings is stored. He's not there. Passwords are stored in a separate non-volatile eeprom memory, which is not erased when the power is turned off.

A forgotten password on some laptop models can be reset using special passphrases. The method of selecting these phrases on Asus, Lenovo, HP and other brands of laptops is not the same and is not always effective. Often the problem is solved only by flashing the storage module on the programmer.

The hard disk password is stored in a secure area of the magnetic media, as well as in the controller's memory. When the user enters the password, both copies are compared. This dual way of storing the password ensures maximum security of the data on the disk, but in case of forgetting to restore or reset it impossible. The information will be lost irretrievably.

How to setup

  • After turning on the laptop, press the key combination to enter the BIOS Setup Utility.
  • Use the arrow keys to navigate to the "Security" tab. The required options are circled in the screenshot. Select "Change (Set) Supervisor Password", press Enter and enter the passphrase in the field that appears.

  • If you want to set a password for a user (user rights in the BIOS are limited to viewing and changing minor settings like date and time), select "Change (Set) User Password" and do the same.
  • The option to set a password on the disk is located here and is called "Change (Set) HDD Password". If it is not there, then the computer does not support it.

  • To save the settings and close the utility, press F10.

Now you will have to enter passwords every time you turn on the laptop, without them loading Windows and accessing information will be prohibited.

But about that how to set a password on a computer Haven't posted yet, so I'll fix it. In fact, this is a very important point that will help protect your computer from prying eyes. But to tell the truth, any protection is hacked if necessary, and if someone really needs your information, then he will receive it. But these are already special cases, to protect the computer from children and curious relatives, the password that is set on your account will be enough.

Today I will write how to set a password for your account in the Windows 7 operating system, you can also set a password in the BIOS system, but I think that I will write about this a little later, in a separate article. We will look at how to set a password when you have one administrator account.

I advise you to immediately come up with a password that you will set. I must say right away that there are no dates of birth, surnames, names, etc. you don’t even need to crack such a password, you can pick it up :). Come up with a good password for ten characters. The main thing is that you remember it, and it is desirable to write it down somewhere, just so that no one sees it, well, you understand :).

When setting a password, carefully look at the keyboard layout language, whether Caps lock is also enabled or disabled. And then set a password, and when you try to log in under it, you will get a refusal, my friend once had this, he hid it from himself :).

If you have already come up with a password and know how to write it correctly, then let's get started.

Setting a password for a computer

Open "Start", and click on your account picture, this way we will quickly get to the account settings.

A window will open where you click on “Create a password for your account”.

A window will open in which we will set the password. Everything is very simple, we enter the password we invented twice, then a hint, this is such a thing that everyone can see, but only it should remind you of the password. And we press "Create a password".

Now you can restart your computer, and when you turn it on, you will need to enter the password we set, like this:

And you can still block the computer, for example, when you move away from it for a few minutes. Just press Win+L and the computer will lock up. A window will appear in which you need to enter the password we set and after clicking on the arrow, you can continue working with the computer. Sometimes this is very helpful.

In order to remove or change the password that we have set on the computer, also go to start and click on your account photo. A window will appear in which you can select “Change your password”, or “Remove your password”.

A login password is a good way to protect important files from strangers. This article will help you set or remove a password to enter the system, as well as completely reset it, if you forgot, using a special flash drive.

Setting a password on Windows 7

Even a simple combination of numbers is a guarantee that very young family members or work colleagues will not get access to information that is meaningful to you. It is not difficult to create a password - the tools of the OS itself will help us with this.

First you need to turn on the computer and log into the account that you want to protect with a password. To set a password, you need:

  1. Go to menu "Start" → click on the user icon (a window will open "User accounts" );

Figure 1. Click on the user icon.
  1. In the window that appears, select "Create a password for your account" install password, re-enter it in the field "Password confirmation" , invent and write "Password Hint" → save changes by pressing a button "Create a password" ;

Figure 2. Entering a new password.
  1. Restart your computer to make sure the steps are correct.
Ready.

These two simple steps will help protect your files.
If you want to change or delete your password, please read the next chapter. Be prepared that in order to reset your password, you may need to spend a lot of time at the computer, and may require special equipment.

Reset password with proper skills available.

Therefore, if you are seriously concerned about the safety of your information, set a BIOS password. Instructions can be found in the chapter "".

Change or remove your account password (if you remember it)

These actions are no more complicated than those described in the previous chapter.
We will consider two situations: when you remember the password (hereinafter), and when you forgot it (see chapter ).

To remove or change the passcode, you need to:

  1. Enter "Start" → click on the icon (located in the upper right corner above the name of the current account);
  2. Now in the window "User Accounts" choose the item you need: "Change…" or "Remove your password" ;
  3. Settings will open with fields that need to be filled in. You need to enter a new password, a hint-confirmation to it (or the old one, if you delete it) → click on the button "Change password" (or "Remove password") .

Figure 3. Change/delete the password.
Ready.

Now it is advisable to write down the new password and keep it in a safe place. After reading this chapter, questions might arise if:

  • You have completely forgotten your password and want to see it or delete it;
  • You are looking for a more reliable way to protect your data than standard tools.
Then check out the chapters for instructions on how to reset your password (even if you forgot it) and "Bonus" with installation steps.

Complete password removal on Windows 7

This chapter contains information on completely resetting the password from absolutely any account.

This will require flash drive and a working (with the ability to log into the OS) computer. Attention!
All further actions must be agreed with the account/computer owner.
Let's start.

Step 1. Flash drive preparation.

First you need to clean the drive.

To do this, in the folder "My computer" you need to right-click on the flash drive and select the item "Format..." → file system: « FAT 32" "Begin" .

Wait for the end of the process.
Figure 4. We format our flash drive.
Step 2 Download the desired program to reset the password.

Everything is simple here: (archive is attached at the end of the article) → unpack to any convenient place → copy files to the root of the flash drive.

Step 3 Assign the status of the drive bootable.

This can be done by standard means of the system - using command line (cmd) .

For this you need:

  1. Open "Start" → enter the query in the search bar: "cmd" → open the corresponding item with the right mouse button (mandatory!) → "Run as administrator" (black command console will start);

Figure 5. Opening the command console with administrator rights.
  1. Next, you need to enter the command: G: syslinux. exe- maG(instead of "G" in both cases, use the letter of your flash drive, which can be found in the window "My computer");
  2. The operation must go no mistakes. Now you can close the command line. If errors still occur, repeat the steps from "Step 1".

Figure 6. We get, it would seem, a “zero result”.
Step 4 We start the computer from a bootable USB flash drive. This step depends in part on your motherboard/laptop model. We need to set our drive as a priority in Setup Menu (BIOS) or Boot Menu→ turn off the computer on which we plan to recover the password and:
  1. Enter BIOS by pressing the F1/F2/F12/Delete button (depending on the motherboard);
If you do not know how to enter the BIOS on your computer or laptop, then you.
  1. Go to tab « Boot » (navigation is carried out by arrows on the keyboard);
  2. Install a bootable flash drive first in line « Boot priority ( order / « Boot device priority »
  3. Save changes to tab « exit » (« Save & exit ») item selection « exit Saving Changes » → confirm with « Yes » .
The computer should automatically boot from the flash drive

Step 5 Delete the password.

First you need to wait until the program is fully loaded (check 2 minutes if you are not sure). Enter the following commands in sequence without quotes(relevant for most users):
The following steps are also suitable for resetting the administrator password.

  1. Click « Enter » ;
  2. "C:\Windows\System32\config" – access to the register;
  3. "Password reset » – running the script for completely removing the password;
  4. Enter Username for which you want to reset the password;
  5. « Clear user Password » - clearing the password from the registry
  6. «!» just an exclamation mark;
  7. Press a key on the keyboard "Y" .
Now you need to restart your computer if this did not happen automatically. The login password will disappear, and you can continue to use the OS. Do not forget to write down the new combination on a piece of paper in order to avoid similar troubles in the future. The following is information about the most reliable (of course, regular) method of keeping data on a computer practically invulnerable to hacking - installing protection on the BIOS.

Bonus. Setting a BIOS password

This password cannot be reset using a regular bootable flash drive. To remove this type of protection, you need to "explore" the hardware of the computer. Extract only CMOS can restore BIOS to factory settings (including clearing the password) if you forget the data from entering the Setup Menu of the computer. To install such protection, you need:

  1. Go to BIOS(this is done by pressing the F1/F2/F12/Delete button);
  2. Find by tabs (usually « security» or « Main» ) paragraph « set user Password » (or « bios Setting Password» ) → select by pressing the key « Enter » ;
  3. Enter new password → « Enter » .

Figure 7. Create a new password.
  1. The protection is now set only to enter the BIOS, and you need to make sure that the password is requested every time you start the computer. To do this, find the item in the menu « Password Check » → set its value to "Always";
  2. Save password by selecting « Save and exit Setup » (can be located both in the general tab and in « exit » ).
Ready.

The most secure protection is installed. Without access to the BIOS, outsiders can literally do nothing. Be sure to write down the password so you don't accidentally forget it, and put it in a safe place.
