System Restore disk is locked. The drive on which Windows is installed is locked - a solution to the problem. How to fix Windows boot error from hard drive

I have already looked at several forums in search of an answer to my question. Unfortunately, no cure has yet been found. The fact is that, as written in the topic, after the next update of Windows 8, it stopped loading. I'm smart trying to start a recovery from a backup drive. I get the inscription: "The drive on which Windows is installed is locked." Very nice.

All files and directory structure on the disk are visible. The disk is available when the system is booted from a bootable USB flash drive. Hard drive surface tested - healthy. There was no viral infection. How to remove this lock? What is it all about? Thanks for the actual answers. I don't want to reinstall Windows.

Thank you very much Sirano, it helped me a lot, I had two disks, one system disk. I added a third one and decided to put Windows on it, somehow the old system disk was blocked and was visible only through the BIOS. After entering these three commands in the console, everything worked.

Hello! We did a mechanism with activation through diskpart. Now it won't boot from the flash drive at all. How to call the management console and still resurrect the disk? Still, we hope to save the data from the hard ...

These steps helped me.
I inserted a disk with Windows, started the computer, then selected the recovery item (in the installation window) and selected the recovery item from the recovery point. The recovery process started, but at the end an error appeared that the disk was locked. Then he pulled out the hard drive and inserted it into another computer. On the second PC, Windows started up and a window popped up about the successful recovery from the restore point: D
Then I installed the hard drive back, but before that I replaced the battery with a mat. board.

I just moved the disk with Windows installed to another laptop, purely for verification. I returned it back - and a blue screen, a second and a reboot. I inserted a disk with Windows, chose the recovery mode at boot time, it helped.

Sergei | November 6, 2015, 22:00
I did almost the same as in Sirano's answer. My actions:

1. we detail the disk, we find that there is a partition of 100 Mb, that is, it is not necessary to create it again.
2. to restore, you need to execute the BCDBoot c: Windows / s s: / f UEFI command, where s: is the letter that should be assigned to our 100 megabyte partition. So first you need to assign a letter:

List part (looking for our section x)
select part X (where x is a 100 meg section)
assign letter="S"
exit

BCDBoot c:Windows /s s: /f UEFI

3. After that, Windows didn’t boot up right away, again I got an error with a suggestion to send the computer to figs or press F8, then I chose Boot in safe mode with command line support. So Windows loaded. After that, I rebooted it and everything worked as usual.

Nevmerden | August 24, 2015, 17:43
Sirano, there is a third option. markup is fine. all sections are present, everything is visible in the disc and the section with the recovery and with the system. But when I try to restore, it says that the partition is missing. You need to make it active through diskpart
diskpart
list disk
sel disk
list par
sel par
active

After the reboot, the laptop will start automatically booting from the partition recovery.

Sergei | July 21, 2015, 00:30
all other tips did not help me, so I went the logical way by first checking if the hard drive is alive

Sergei | July 21, 2015, 00:26
Good evening everyone! Solved the problem simply. I took a remote hard drive and pulled it out of the case. Instead, I inserted a hard drive from a Lenovo 575 laptop (which did not boot). On another computer, I looked that the hard drive from the laptop was opening. After that, I inserted my remote disk into the laptop and went into the BIOS by pressing the F2 button constantly. I went to the boot section where I saw my external drive. Before that, I did not see the boot hard disk of the laptop. Using the F5 / F6 buttons, I put my external hard drive in first place in the boot. Then I pressed F10 and saved the changes. After that, I rearranged the hard drive of the laptop back into place and started the download from the start button. In the section that opens, I selected Windows Boot Recovery. After 7 minutes, the computer restored everything about what I wrote Done. Went into reboot and bravo loaded Windows 7

This is a question from the archives. Adding responses is disabled.

How often do serious interventions in the life of a computer or laptop remain without consequences? Yes, almost never! And one day, after demolishing and reinstalling the operating system, installing updates, or even after hacker attacks, or maybe just jokes with the BIOS settings (basic entry and exit system), when turned on, a picture appears on the screen asking for a password. And you forgot it, or don't even remember what you installed. In general, now you have an urgent need to unlock your hard drive. How to do this, we tell in Russian, without references to English-language sites, and instructions for replacing the BIOS and other feats that most mere mortals are not capable of.

A small digression - why did this happen. After all, most users did not set any passwords, and why the hard drive is locked is not clear. The system works in such a way that when you turn on the computer, the BIOS starts checking the hardware for operability, and if everything goes well, the OS starts loading. If she doesn’t like something, for example, the fact that the day before you transferred the OS to an SSD or installed a new OS, or something else, then she herself will block the disk, even if you didn’t ask her for such protection measures. In any case, before you despair and go to the service specialists, who can also advise you to simply change the blocked disk, you should try to figure it out on your own. So, to unlock the disk, you need to remove the password first from the BIOS, and then directly from the HDD.

Removing a BIOS password on a desktop PC

There are two stages in overcoming the problem. The first is by tampering with the insides of your computer. The fact is that the BIOS, so to speak, is territorially located on the motherboard. All input-output system settings are recorded while the battery is running on the motherboard. Therefore, you can reset the settings by de-energizing it, by removing the battery for thirty seconds, well, or a little longer. No wonder you dismantled the system? Or even simpler - using the special "Clear CMOS" button or the CMOS jumper, which is specially installed for this purpose on some motherboards. But if you can't find it, remove the battery. Of course, this must first be done by turning off the computer from the network.

Removing a password from the BIOS in a laptop

The catch is that such a convenient mechanical method is only suitable for desktop computers. Since laptops have the system password in non-volatile memory, there is no jumper to save the system, and removing the battery is unlikely to reset the password. Here you have to bridge the contacts of the battery. Most often this is done with a screwdriver. (Just don’t try to do it with a bare metal rod! You yourself will become a conductor.) We find the battery and the contacts coming from it, close them for half a minute in the same way as in the case of the battery on the PC motherboard. Again, turning off the power and removing the battery from the laptop.

Removing the password from the hard drive

Now we turn to manipulations without surgical intervention - directly unlock the hard drive. In the window that appears to enter the password that protects the hard disk, enter the wrong password three times. After three incorrect attempts, the code "Encrypt HDD Key:" is issued. The numbers following this inscription must be entered into a special code calculator located at the link: BIOS Password Removal for Laptops. We hammer the issued key into the window of this resource and in response we get a password for our laptop. Password removed, hard drive unlocked.

The drive where windows is installed is locked! Main causes and solutions

Greetings, dear readers.

Judging by many forums, a large number of owners of computers with the eighth version of Microsoft's OS are faced with a problem when, after the next update, the computer stops booting. At the same time, it gives an error that the drive on which the windows system is installed is locked. It should be noted right away that there were no statements from the developer himself about this. So the problem will have to be solved by ourselves.

Reasons (to content)

Judging by the facts, this situation is due to the peculiar operation of the operating system with the disk system. Many believe that the problem occurs as a result of a simple confusion of the letters that were assigned to the drives. Others insist that the fault is not entirely correctly prescribed RAID driver for the chipset from Intel. Although on the Internet you can find many rebuttals of such a theory. In any case, it is possible to cope with the disease, and I will tell you about it, as always, in detail.

Solutions (to content)

If after the next update you see that the disk is blocked by windows, do not panic right away - there is a solution. Of course, it is not very simple, but effective.

Conventionally, recovery is divided into two stages:

    Markup check.

    Opening access.

Markup check(back to content)

So, to bring your device back to life, you need to make a few movements:

After that, a partition with a capacity of 100 to 300 MB should appear in the list. If this happened, go to the “Restoring access” stage. And if this did not happen, what to do? Then we continue:

Again we go to the "Command line".

Now we execute the request "create partition efi size = 100" and press "Enter".

    Then "assign letter="S"".

At the very end we write exit.

Now you need to write "BCDBoot c: \ windows / s S: / f UEFI" and then also press "Enter".

For many users who had an error when restoring windows 8, often after what had already been done, everything returned to normal. If this does not happen, we move on.

Opening access (to content)

This item also includes the use of the "Command line" from under the "Recovery" menu:

Now the annoying inscription should no longer appear.

This method is considered the most complete - it should definitely work for everyone. As mentioned above, for many, problems are solved, and not only after the last command is executed, but also at previous stages.

You also need to remember that for the procedure you must use the windows distribution kit, with which the current system was previously installed. Otherwise, the command may not work, which means everything will remain as it is.

Well, I hope the above helped you unlock your drive and get your computer back up and running. Subscribe, and I will tell you a lot more interesting things about your device.

When trying to restore the OS, an error appears: "The drive on which windows is installed is locked. Unlock the drive and try again."

Possible Solution:

1) Boot from DVD. If there is no disk, then you need to burn the windows image to disk. (On laptops, monoblocks, nettops, you can boot from the recovery partition and perform all these steps). 2) Install windows window will appear. Here we click on the "Next" button.

3) In the next window, click on the button in the lower right corner "System Restore".

4) In the current "Select action" window, select the "Diagnostics" button.
5) In the "Diagnostics" window, select "Advanced options".

6) Now select "Command Prompt".

7) In the "Command line" window, type the following commands one by one:

7.1) bootrec / fixmbr and press Enter.

7.2) bootrec / fixboot and press Enter.

7.3) bootrec /rebuildbcd and press Enter.

8) Reboot the computer and check the result.

Bitlocker how to unlock: without password, through recovery key

Bitlocker is a ransomware program that first appeared in windows 7. It can be used to encrypt hard drive volumes (even the system partition), USB and MicroSD flash drives. But it often happens that the user simply forgets the password for accessing Bitlocker encrypted data. How to unlock information on an encrypted medium, read in the framework of this article.

Encryption procedure

The program itself suggests ways to decrypt data at the stage of creating a lock:

Important! You can choose the encryption method. Bitlocker supports 128 and 256 bit XTS AES and AES-CBC encryption.

Changing the Drive Encryption Method

In the Local Group Policy Editor (not supported by windows 10 Home), you can select the encryption method for data drives. The default is XTS AES 128 bit for non-removable drives and AES-CBC 128 bit for removable hard drives and flash drives.

To change the encryption method:

After changing the policy, Bitlocker will be able to password-protect a new media with the selected parameters.

How to unlock?

The lock process provides two ways to further gain access to the contents of the drive: password and smart card binding. If you forgot your password or lost access to the smart card (or rather did not use it at all), it remains to use the recovery key. When password-protecting a flash drive, it is necessarily created, so you can find it:

  1. Printed out on a sheet of paper. Perhaps you placed it with important documents.
  2. In a text document (or on a USB flash drive, if the system partition was encrypted). Insert the USB flash drive into your computer and follow the instructions. If the key is saved to a text file, read it on an unencrypted device.
  3. On a Microsoft account. Log in to your profile on the site in the "Bitlocker Recovery Keys" section.

After you have found the recovery key:

Important! If your system drive or local volume is locked by Bitlocker, you forgot your password, or you lost your recovery key, roll back to a previous windows restore point. If there are no saved points, roll back the system to its original state (Settings → Update and security → Recovery → Reset the computer to its original state). Remember, this will delete all personal information.

Disabling Bitlocker

Encryption can be disabled. To do this, go to Control Panel → All Controls → Bitlocker Drive Encryption:

Advice! If you have lost access to the locked files of the flash drive, but you want to continue using it, format it.

Blocking the drive on which the windows operating system is installed

In an attempt to get some information about this situation, the author of the article came across mean and simply copying each other messages from computer forums. A more or less truthful explanation was found on the Microsoft website (https://support.microsoft.com/ru-ru/kb/2826045/en-us), however, in English. Its author explains the appearance of the message "the drive on which windows is installed is locked" by the following user actions:

  • An upgrade was carried out from windows 7 to windows 8;
  • Intel Smart Response Technology (SRT) was included to optimize computer performance when switching from a conventional hard drive to an SSD drive;
  • The user tried to restore windows 8 using the built-in WinRE tools "Refresh your PC" or "Reset your PC" ("Reset your PC").

In such cases, a message may appear stating that the disk with the operating system installed on it is locked. In non-Russian operating systems, this message looks like “The drive where windows is installed is locked. Unlock the drive and try again."

Causes and Solutions

Microsoft support says that one of the reasons for this message is the lack of the Intel Rapid Storage Technology (Intel RST) driver required for Intel Smart Response Technology. Without it, this technology will not work, since it essentially relies on its use. In this case, technical support advises, if it is possible to download windows 8, contact the PC manufacturer and get instructions on how to disable this technology.

If there is no way to enter the initial boot screen, then you should:

From other messages on the forums, it can be noted that the reason is to update the hard drive controller driver, which does not have a digital signature or does not pass verification in UEFI-Bios. At the same time, the UEFI security Boot function can block its launch at the hardware level and prevent the operating system from booting. This issue is solved by disabling this feature in Bios.

There are also reports that this phenomenon occurs after the next update of windows 8. And it is impossible to roll back due to the lack of loading the operating system. There are also tips to use the bootrec /fixboot command - some have achieved this solution to the problem.

There are also many other suggestions to fix this problem, for example, on many laptops it is possible to restore from the built-in Recovery partition, but there are no positive answers to this recommendation.

This topic is another evidence of the “dampness” of windows 8, which makes developers nod at manufacturers, and manufacturers nod at developers.

However, this would not be a problem if people did not forget these most established codes. If this is the first time you have encountered such a situation and do not know how to remove the password from the hard drive on a laptop, then this article is designed just for you.

HDD

If you installed the code on internal media and forgot, then you will not even be able to boot the OS installed on your PC. That is, the possibility of using a laptop or computer for its intended purpose will simply be absent. In such a situation, the user can only delete the set password, because otherwise access to the computer cannot be obtained.

Online service

There are several ways to remove the password from the hdd, and one of them is the well-known online service " BIOS Password Removal for Laptops».

To get rid of a forgotten code by using it, you must:

  • Enter it incorrectly 3 times (any combination of numbers or letters).
  • After that, a special code should appear in the window.
  • We copy the received numbers.
  • We enter the same combination on the site, at the link above.

A few seconds after entering a combination of numbers in a specially designated line, you will receive a code that will help you reset the password from your drive.

It should be clarified that this program is suitable for all models and manufacturers of hard drives (seagate, hitachi, toshiba, wd, etc.). Moreover, it doesn't matter what operating system is installed on your computer or laptop, because. this service is considered universal.

BIOS

You can remove the password from the hard disk in the BIOS only if the cipher was originally set via bios'e.

All you need is to use the standard option to reset the default settings:

Thus, we reset the password from the HDD.

Second way

The next option is free, specially designed for a variety of hard drive operations.

First, you need to familiarize yourself with the scheme of the password protection of the drive:

  • Winchester can have high or maximum protection.
  • Using the MHDD application, you can set a custom protection level.
  • The master password set by the manufacturer can only be changed.
  • The use of a master password makes it possible to unlock the drive only with a high level of protection.
  • In the case of the maximum level of protection, the hard drive can only be unlocked if a user code is set.
  • If the maximum level of protection is set and there is no user password, then the drive can only be unlocked by destroying all data using the Security Erase Unit ATA command.

Given the above information, in order to remove the password from the hard drive, you should:

Thus, you can extremely quickly remove the previously entered and forgotten cipher.

Third way

The HDD_PW.EXE (18KB) program will also help you remove the password from the hard disk. In order to remove the code with its help, you need to do the following:

  • Find out the error code (when loading, press F2 and enter the wrong combination of numbers three times, after which a special code will appear on the screen)
  • Launch an MS-DOS application.
  • Select the name of the utility in the window that opens.
  • After a space, enter the error code that you learned earlier, and add 0 through the space.
  • By pressing "Enter", several passwords will appear in front of you, one of which is sure to work.

After entering the code, be sure to change it to a new one and write it down.

When performing these steps on a 64-bit system, you may encounter some difficulties. The system may generate an error due to a utility mismatch. In this situation it is necessary:

  • Download DOSBox, install and run.
  • Mount drive "C" with the command "mount c c: /".
  • Then, at startup, press "F2", again type the wrong cipher 3 times and do the same steps.

To eliminate the possibility of such situations, it is recommended to completely get rid of the cipher by disabling it in the PC settings. If you are in dire need of it, then you should write it down in a notebook or any other place so that you do not have to reset it again.

In the event that you have a Lenovo laptop and the message “enter hdd password” is displayed on the screen at startup, the method discussed in this video will help you:

Probably, many had to deal with the problem of ransomware viruses. The disk is locked and a message is displayed. It proposes to fix this problem with payment. You can't be fooled by scammers. After reading this article, you will learn how to unlock a hard drive yourself.

Types of blocking

There are two types of blocking:

  • blocking Windows Explorer;
  • complete blocking of the computer, that is, the hard drive.

In the first case, the computer boots up, comes to the appearance of desktop icons, but instead a message of a certain nature appears. In this case, only the current Windows is blocked. If other operating systems are installed on the computer, they will boot.

In the second case, the master boot record of the hard disk (Master Boot Record) is changed. When you try to boot your computer, a black background appears with a blinking cursor.

Unlock Master Boot Record

For Windows XP, do the following:

  • Boot from any disk of the Windows XP installation distribution. It must support the recovery console.
  • Go to the console and run the fixmbr command;
  • Ignore the warnings about the non-standard boot entry and the fact that it could end badly.

For Windows 7, you need to take the following steps:

  • Boot from a disc with the original installation distribution of Windows 7 that supports the recovery option.
  • Select "System Restore".
  • In the "System Recovery Options" menu, select the OS that needs to be restored, click "Next".
  • Select "Command Prompt".
  • Enter Bootrec.exe /FixMbr into the command line interpreter window.
  • The utility, launched with the /FixMbr switch, writes a Windows 7-compatible Master Boot Record to the system partition.

Generally, the steps above will resolve the issue. If the system still does not boot, then the operation should be repeated and additionally enter the command: Bootrec.exe /FixBoot. The utility launched with the /FixBoot switch writes a new Windows-compatible system sector to the system partition.

Unlock Windows

  • Boot into "Safe Mode with Command Line Support". It is this mode. Just "Safe Mode" will have no effect. Unlock will not happen.
  • To boot into any safe mode, after turning on the PC, press the F8 key. It will bring up the boot menu. This is where the computer should boot (CD/DVD, FDD, HDD). The HDD is selected, Enter is pressed and again F8.
  • Select regedit and press Enter.
  • The Registry Editor will launch. In it, you need to go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon.
  • Edit the parameters so that they become:
    • shell=explorer.exe
    • Userinit = C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe if Windows is located on the C: drive.
  • Close the registry editor and check if there is a virus in startup so that all this correction is not canceled upon reboot. To do this, press Ctrl+Alt+Del. The task manager is called, in it you need to select "New task", type msconfig and click OK.
  • In the window that appears, go to the "Startup" tab. In the "Team" column, find and write down where the pest is located. When you start Explorer, find and delete the file itself.

From the materials of this article, you learned how to unlock the HDD.
