What do dead pixels look like?

The concept of "Dead Pixels" is too broad, and covers all sorts of pixel problems, from fading to dying. I will try to describe in detail specific problems with pixels.

Take a closer look at how your "Broken Pixel" looks on the screen. If this is a small, colored dot, for example, red or green, other colors are possible, then this means that the pixel is “frozen”, or, as they say, froze, and it is quite possible to stir it up.

But if this is a black or white dot, then this indicates that the pixel is covered thoroughly and it will be difficult, and most likely completely impossible, to reanimate it. Although, you can try.

In a modern monitor, an active matrix is ​​used, where all the pixels are under the autonomous control of thin-film transistors (TFT, Thin Film Transistor). When they break, a black or white inactive speck appears on the screen - a broken pixel.

It does not change colors when changing pictures, because the personal transistor does not react to this change. Such "dead" pixels can only be restored by replacing the corresponding transistors, which is done in service centers, workshops; ordinary users cannot fix the defect on their own.

How to remove dead pixels on a computer monitor and mobile devices

You are certainly satisfied with the purchase and everything would be fine, but something confuses, distracts your attention and does not allow you to perceive the picture in its entirety and entertainment. The gaze now and then slides down to a dark, light or colored dot, which retains its color regardless of the broadcast image. Well, get acquainted, gentlemen, you are extremely lucky: in front of you is His Majesty the “Broken Pixel”!

Problem
The image that we see and perceive on the LCD monitor as a whole is actually formed from many clusters of dots called "pixels". In turn, the entire color gamut can be achieved with just three subpixels - red, blue and green. In models of LCD monitors with an active matrix, an individual thin-film transistor (Thin Film Transistor - TFT) is attached to each pixel, the damage of which will appear on the screen as a black inactive dot, which is called a “broken” pixel. And in this case, the problem can only be solved by replacing the transistor in the laboratory and, alas, there is no alternative here.

If you observe a bright dot on a dark background - do not rush to despair! Quite often, the reason for the appearance of broken subpixels is their “hanging” in some intermediate position, which outwardly manifests itself in the absence of their reaction to a changing picture. You can solve the problem at home, without fear of harming the monitor, programmatically, or by performing some physical manipulations.

Why amateur performance if the monitor is under warranty?
An absolutely normal question that is asked by everyone who has already managed to get acquainted with our problem, but is not yet familiar with the likely reaction of the store. It turns out here, even despite the warranty obligations of the service, nuances and disagreements are very likely.

Defective pixels? - Complain to the Stockholm Arbitration!

The real reason for the dispute is the manufacturers themselves, who officially set the tolerance for a certain number of “allowed” dead pixels on monitors of the corresponding standards - the ISO-13406 regulation.

In accordance with accepted tolerances, monitors are divided into 4 classes:
1st class - dead pixels are practically excluded, warranty repair and replacement in case of detection is mandatory and is carried out immediately;
2nd class - the most common variant, allowing the presence of 2 defects of types I and II;
3rd class - budget models that allow the presence of 5 broken pixels of type I, 15 - type II, 50 - type III.
4th class - monitors of low quality, allowing the presence of 50, 150 and up to 500 (!) Type I, II and III defects, respectively.

Type I - white pixel visible on a black background;
Type II - black pixel on a white background;
Type III - red, blue, green pixels.

It becomes clear that despite the warranty, the annoying single white pixel in the center of the screen of the 2nd class monitor remains your problem, and the best way to prevent this situation is to connect and test the display before calculation or during the period available for exchange in accordance with consumer protection law.

As paradoxical as it may seem, it is often possible to carry out an operation to “reset” a pixel into its place by massaging the injured area with circular movements. If one of the pixels or a group of pixels does not work, the image on this part of the screen will not match the one transmitted to the monitor from the system unit. There are several types of dead pixels:

  • Stuck pixels. Most often, these are pixels that are stuck in blue, red or green. They are not capable of working with RGB colors;
  • Permanently glowing pixels. These are pixels that are constantly lit in white.

Please note: Sometimes not one pixel fails, but a group of pixels in a horizontal or vertical strip, or “squares” of pixels, for example, 5 by 5 or 10 by 10 elements, are damaged.

Why is it important to check the monitor for dead pixels when buying

When purchasing a new monitor or laptop, be sure to immediately check for dead pixels in the store. This is due to the fact that if you find a similar defect after purchase, then it is far from a fact that it will be possible to return the monitor under warranty. The fact is that there is the ISO13406-2 standard, which determines the permissible number of defective pixels for monitors of various classes.

This standard provides for the launch of monitors on the market in 4 quality classes. The best class is the first, the worst is the fourth.

Please note: Almost all mass monitors are produced in the second quality class, respectively, according to the standardISO13406-2 they imply the presence of dead pixels.

According to the standard ISO13406-2, the following number of non-working or incorrectly working pixels in monitors of various classes per one million pixels per panel is allowed:

  • 1 quality class. There should be no defective pixels at all;
  • 2 quality class. No more than 2 permanently burning white pixels, 2 permanently off black pixels, 5 pixels with other defects are allowed;
  • 3 quality class. No more than 5 permanently burning white pixels, 15 permanently off black pixels, 50 pixels with other defects are allowed;
  • 4 quality class. No more than 50 permanently lit white pixels, 150 permanently off black pixels, 500 pixels with other defects are allowed.

It should be noted that the acceptable value of defective pixels does not mean that they are necessarily present on a monitor of one class or another. The quality class of the monitor according to accepted standards is determined by the manufacturer of the device. Depending on which class he determines, additional warranty obligations are imposed on him.

How to check your monitor for dead pixels

When purchasing equipment in a store, there is always the opportunity to check it right on the spot, and in a situation with a monitor, this must be done. There are special applications that allow you to check the monitor for defective pixels. Programs are available, both standalone and presented on various sites.

The principle of operation of all programs for checking the screen for broken pixels is identical. The entire working area of ​​the display is filled with a single color, a group of colors or a gradient, which allows you to see dead pixels, if any, on the monitor. However, there is another type of dead pixels - stuck ones.

How to detect dead pixels?

There are many different programs that cycle through different colors on the screen. The main feature will be any dot of a different color on a solid background. The pixel seems to get stuck in one position and does not respond to image changes. Such defects can be restored by some programs and physical manipulations.

How to repair a dead pixel?

Let's analyze the hardware (software) method with which you can identify and try to "revive" a dead pixel. Examples of such programs are Bad Crystal, JScreenFixDead and Dead Pixel Tester.

Dead Pixel Tester is a free utility that is designed to test and repair non-working pixels (dataproductservices.com).

To do this, use the Dead Pixel Tester utility and run it. In the "Pattern" column, select the "Solid" option, next to the "Auto color cycle" column, check the box and set the time: 2500 ms. Leave the program running for one to two hours.

The principle of operation of this application is to stimulate the allegedly "dead" pixels with alternating colors. It happens that as a result of such color activity, faulty pixels begin to function normally.

If this does not help, you can use the mechanical method. Take a cotton swab or microfiber cloth (some people prefer to use an eraser), and then, with a little pressure, swipe over the area of ​​​​the screen with a defective pixel from left to right and from bottom to top.

Dead pixels are constantly glowing or vice versa - dots or parts of a dot (subpixels) that do not work on the monitor. If the pixel does not work at all, then it always looks black and is only noticeable on white and light colors. This is the most harmless type of dead pixels, but it is almost impossible to treat.

The most common dead subpixels are when a bright red, blue, green, yellow, turquoise or magenta dot is constantly lit. They are also called "stuck" pixels (stuck pixels). If such a pixel pops up in a prominent place, it is very annoying, especially red 🙂 If all three subpixels are buggy at once, then a white dot will glow on the screen.

By the way, defective pixels can both appear and disappear themselves. On my main monitor from the purchase itself, there were three multi-colored dots in the middle of the screen. When buying, I either did not notice them, or they appeared already at home, I don’t know. But I didn’t bother about this, because. they were absolutely invisible to the eye, if you do not peer. In 4 years of working with this monitor, I never noticed them, although they were in the middle of the screen.

I think this is due to the fact that my monitor is on an MVA matrix, and not on the common TN. Probably, the specificity of the matrix is ​​​​such that minor defects are not noticeable. So, I recently decided to check if these pixels can be removed in a new way. I checked and they weren't there! We all went somewhere in formation 🙂

Programs for recovering dead pixels

It is not worth talking about high-tech methods used only in laboratories. Is it possible, in principle, to get rid of multi-colored dots at home? Yes it is possible! And I made sure of it myself. There are two ways to eliminate dead pixels - software and mechanical.

Restoration occurs due to the rapid change of colors of adjacent pixels. Thanks to this process, a large amount of energy is supplied to the sub-pixels and they come to life. This technology promises to recover from 55% to 90% of "stuck pixels". True, each case may require a different amount of time, you will have to experiment if you can’t remove the damaged pixels from the raid. Experiments mean changing the speed of changing colors and the running time of the program.

The repaired pixel may get stuck again after a while, especially in hot weather. Then the treatment process will need to be repeated. In some cases, such a pixel cannot be completely cured.

UndeadPixel will suit most

Go to the official website and download the program installer. I recommend the installation version, not the portable version.

In the main window of the program, it is proposed to start by finding dead pixels by filling the screen with solid colors: red, lime, blue, white, black and yellow. Different dead pixels will be visible on different backgrounds. If you already know where your pixels are, then we immediately proceed to recovery.

UDPixel works like this: a square appears in which colors change quickly, i.e. the pixel recovery algorithm works there, and we need to move this square to the problem area of ​​the screen. In the "Undead pixel" section, you need to set the parameters:

  • Flash windows - the number of squares, i.e. how many problem areas are you going to treat at the same time
  • Flash size - the size of one square in pixels 1x1 or 5x5. Since it is very difficult to set a 1x1 square to exactly 1 pixel, a 5x5 area will do to restore even one pixel
  • Flash interval - pixel update rate by algorithm. The shorter the time, the faster the speed. Maximum speed at 3ms.

Press Start and move the flickering square(s) to the defective places, see the video below. When the pixel starts flashing, then this is already an application for victory, just leave it for a longer time. If everything is unchanged, then select the maximum speed and wait until the pixel disappears. In the worst cases, it can take 10 hours, there is no point in waiting any longer.

The peculiarity of UDPixel is that during the restoration of pixels, you can continue to work if the squares are not large and do not interfere.

JScreenFix for browser

This is not a program, but just a website, a free service on the Internet. Thanks to this, JScreenFix can be run on any device with the Internet: computer, laptop, tablet, MacBook or LCD panel.

Scroll down the page and click the "Launch JScreenFix" button. The JScreenFix script restores dead pixels in the same way as UDPixel, only without the ability to change the parameters, and it will not work at this time at the computer.

The manufacturers of these programs recommend doing preventive maintenance to your monitor, occasionally starting the “recovery process”. I don’t know how justified it is to spend my attention on this, but for plasma panels this can be really useful.

The program starts by selecting a device: computer screen, mobile phone, game console or plasma panel.

If you have a regular monitor or laptop, select "Computer Monitor". To display the additional menu, move the mouse to the top of the window. Press "Launch" and move the window to the area of ​​broken pixels. We wait 5-10 minutes and check. If the point remains, then increase the speed using the "Speed ​​Up" button, which appears if you move the mouse to it, and wait another 10-15 minutes.
