Laptop brightness not working Solving the problem with adjusting the brightness on a laptop. Using the graphics card management program

The main volume of power consumption of a portable PC falls on the screen backlight lamps. Manufacturers specifically tune them to low power to improve battery life. For many people, this brightness becomes unacceptable, so it will be useful to know how to make the screen brighter, adjust the image.

How to adjust brightness on laptop

If you are sure that the monitor is too dim, there are options on how to increase the brightness of the screen on a laptop. Each manufacturer left the ability for users to adjust contrast levels, color reproduction, etc. You can change the screen backlight power in the following ways:

  • through the power menu;
  • built-in Windows program;
  • using hot keys;
  • through additional applications.

Using a keyboard shortcut

The easiest option to increase the brightness of the laptop screen is a combination of buttons. All global manufacturers of portable computers (Asus, Lenovo, Samsung, HP, Acer) by default have hot key combinations through the Fn function button. It is located on the lowest line of the keyboard, usually between Ctrl and Win. Instructions on how to change the screen brightness on a laptop through the function keys:

  1. Find the key on your keyboard that has a sun or a light bulb on it. On different models, these can be either arrows or one of the F1, F2, F8 buttons.
  2. Hold Fn, then you need to press the key with the image of the sun several times. The backlight should change gradually, set the desired level.
  3. In the same way, you can do the reverse procedure. Nearby there should be a button with the sun, but not painted over inside, which means the ability to reduce the intensity of the backlight.

Via power settings

The computer options are programmed so that when the PC is disconnected from the network, make the screen dark to save battery. If desired, you can configure different operating modes so that the monitor does not become dim even when disconnected from the network. For this you need:

  1. Go to the start menu.
  2. Go to the "Control Panel" section.
  3. Find the item "Power Options", click on it.
  4. Use the "Display Off Setting" section.

This menu has two settings: on battery and on mains. You can set specific metrics for these two states. You will be prompted to set values for the time after which the monitor will be turned off, the screen will go to sleep, the brightness level of the screen. Some portable PC models may have several modes of operation, for example, Asus suggests using Performance, Quite Office, Movie, and you can make changes to each of them.

How to increase the brightness on a laptop through a special program

Another option on how to increase the brightness of the screen on a laptop is to use additional programs and system functions. Manufacturers, along with drivers, offer to install software for their products. For example, Intel suggests using a special Intel HD Graphics utility, which can usually be found on the taskbar next to the clock. For AMD, these functions are performed by the Catalyst Center, which provides a wide range of options for making changes to the display settings.

If you want to easily, quickly add backlight power to your monitor, you can use the built-in menu from Windows. For this:

  1. Right click on the battery icon.
  2. Select Widnows Mobility Center.
  3. In the window that opens, use the slider to increase the required value.

What to do if the brightness on the laptop does not change

Sometimes adjusting the brightness of the laptop screen does not have the desired effect. This is not a reason to immediately go to a service center, sometimes the problem lies elsewhere. First, you should check the availability of drivers for the video card, their relevance. It is likely that the graphics driver simply does not know how to respond to your actions. You should also check the availability of drivers for the keyboard and the functionality of the Fn key. Try using it to increase or decrease the volume of the speakers.

Not so long ago, I ran into one most unpleasant problem - on all my laptops, the ability to adjust the brightness of the screen disappeared at once. Whether it's your favorite Fn keys, or the standard brightness slider in your computer settings. The very concept of “brightness” in the screen settings has disappeared and the main working machine has stalled in dark mode.

The way out of this situation, as it turned out, is quite simple - the problem lies in the drivers. After scouring the forums, I was able to find a few ideas that resulted in a simple solution. For normal operation of the brightness controller, you need to reinstall the driver ... no, not the video card, but the monitor!

How to do it in the easiest way?

  1. We right-click on an empty space on the Desktop, in the menu that opens, select the "Screen Resolution" item.
  2. In the screen resolution settings, we find the link "Advanced options" - it is on the bottom right.
  3. In the window that opens, open the "Monitor" tab, then click on "Properties". Most likely, the system will ask for permission to intervene, we allow it.
  4. In the window that opens, open the "Driver" tab and click on the "Roll Back" button. Voila, brightness control is back!
  5. We press “OK” several times and enjoy the result.

That's it, kickbacks save our lives again!

Important! When using the DRP program, be sure to work in manual mode and expert mode! Otherwise, in addition to updating drivers, you will also get a ton of useless programs! To do this, when starting the program, check the box next to "Settings", select "Expert Mode", check the monitor driver and click "Install" at the bottom of the screen. More details in the screenshot below.

Detailed instructions for working with the driver package are available at the link:.

P.S.: when trying to find the cause of such glitches on one of the computers, I noticed that the monitor driver was digitally signed by TeamViewer. It is quite possible that the problem lies precisely in this program - it was installed on each of the computers being repaired. Might be worth contacting their tech. support.

Let's first see if you can adjust the brightness, not through the keys, but through the Windows settings. If you can, then the problem is most likely in the keys themselves or in special software that is missing or was removed after updating Windows 10. If you cannot adjust the brightness through Windows settings, then read below how to fix it.

The reason is the video card driver.

One of the common reasons lies in the video card drivers. Namely:

We solve the problem with brightness by disabling the PnP monitor.

This solution to the problem is suitable for those who do not have the brightness settings icon active in the Windows 10 notification bar.

Other reasons for brightness control failure.

Programs like TeamViewer. Many people use this program to remotely configure a computer. The fact is that this program additionally installs its own driver for the monitor, which does not support setting the screen brightness. To correct this misunderstanding:

I also recommend checking your monitor drivers. Maybe you have an unusual monitor, but with additional features that are not available on standard monitors. In this case, you need to download the driver specifically for your monitor on the manufacturer's website.

Laptops are devices with which all sorts of problems often happen. For most models, the battery fails over time, due to which the device stops working autonomously. Sometimes the user does not understand why the brightness on the laptop is not adjusted. Also, problems can affect the system part and hardware failures.

Brightness control is an option on any monitor or screen. On a computer, changing this setting is easier because all monitors have dedicated buttons. On a laptop, you must use keyboard shortcuts or system settings. But it happens that the brightness is not adjusted on the laptop. Why and what to do about it?

Problem

If the brightness on a laptop is not adjustable, this may be due to problems with drivers for several devices at once, key problems, and system crashes.

As practice shows, a common cause is the incorrect operation of the monitor drivers, graphics adapter or chipset. Brightness control may not be used very often, but in some cases it can be extremely useful. Especially if the device is often used in different places: on the street, in a cafe or at home. Due to different lighting, the image on the screen may be distorted.

Causes

As mentioned earlier, if the brightness on the laptop is not adjusted, then there is a problem with a certain part of the system. The most common options include:

  • turn off the monitor;
  • video card drivers;
  • chipset driver;
  • lack of auto-updates;
  • monitor drivers;
  • failures at the software level.

Most of these problems occur on any operating system, so the solution to them will suit every user.

Turn off the monitor

Most often, the monitor turns off due to a system failure. Therefore, the solution to this problem lies in the correct setting. How to understand what exactly the monitor turned off?

When opening the control panel, the user does not find the icons for adjusting the brightness. Naturally, you immediately need to open the monitor settings menu.

In the screen settings, you can find the brightness slider, but nothing can be done with it. This again suggests the idea that the monitor is disabled or the system does not find it. How then can the user see everything that happens on the screen?

The bottom line here is that the display is physically functioning, but at the driver level it is displayed by the system as inactive. Therefore, all adjustment options are temporarily disabled. This problem does not happen often, but it is the easiest to deal with.

Solution to turn off the monitor

If the brightness is not adjusted on a Windows laptop, you need to go to the "Device Manager". You can either enter the name of this menu in the search, or go to "My Computer", use the RMB and the "Properties" menu. On the left we find the necessary section.

A new dialog box will list all components connected to the motherboard. Among them we find "Monitors" and "Universal PnP Monitor". If the display is indeed disabled, then an arrow will be displayed next to the icon. It indicates that the monitor is disabled at the software level. It will be enough to click on it with RMB and select the “Activate” command.

After that, it will be enough to reboot the system. It is worth noting right away that a similar problem most often occurs on a laptop with Windows 10 and Lenovo and Pavilion models.

Monitor drivers

Without deviating far from the topic, it is worth mentioning the problems with the monitor drivers. This question is most often faced by those who use specialized equipment that needs drivers.

If a professional or semi-professional screen is used, it will not be able to work in tandem with the standard software that is included in the Windows distribution. In this case, you will have to find suitable "firewood" that would fix the problem. They can be found on the disc that came with the monitor, or on the device manufacturer's website.

Video card drivers

If the brightness does not change on a Windows 10 laptop, you need to take a closer look at the performance of the graphics adapter drivers. This is a common problem, and the graphics card is indeed prone to software issues and update errors.

This problem may be caused by:

  • drivers were removed by the system;
  • they were not installed at all;
  • the adapter has been disabled in the "Device Manager";
  • an incorrect update has occurred.

Troubleshooting video card drivers

So, if the “firewood” was removed or not installed at all in the system, then it is enough to download it yourself to a laptop with Windows 10. Often the system can independently install software from unverified sources, load them with special software or from a driver pack. In this case, you need to go to the official website of the video card manufacturer and find the necessary files there.

It is very important to download the software from the official website so that such problems do not happen again. You can also use special programs for updating.

For example, if the video card is from Nvidia, it will be enough to download Nvidia Experience from the official resource. This is an official utility that offers to optimize the graphical component of the system, as well as install updates for the map.

If the video card is disabled, you need to activate it in the same way as it was done earlier with the monitor. Go to "Device Manager" and find the line "Display adapters", select the desired model and "Enable" it.

Chipset drivers

There is a similar story to the problem with the video card. If, for some reason, drivers were loaded from a third-party source or through automatic installation of system software, not all options may work. Some of them may not be displayed at all, which is why you won’t even be able to find where the brightness is on the laptop.

In this case, it is enough to install the necessary “firewood” from trusted sources or the official website.

Automatic update

Often it is this option of the system that can play a cruel joke. And if in Windows 7 this function was disabled without problems, then with the "Ten" things are more complicated. Often, without the knowledge of the user, the system begins to install updates that can only harm it. Some may cause features or tools to disappear.

To disable it, you will need to go to the "System" menu. This can be done using the Win + X buttons or through the context menu. Next, find the item "Change settings". Find the "Hardware" menu and select "Device Installation Options".

In the new window, you must refuse to automatically download programs: select "No" and click on "Save".

Problems with combinations

The brightness button on a laptop is the easiest way to adjust this setting. It is on every keyboard and initially functions properly. Sometimes it is enough to click on it to change the brightness, and sometimes it is necessary to use a key combination, among which is the "Fn" button.

If for some reason these combinations do not work, the problem may be with the drivers or incorrect use of the buttons.

Every laptop comes with a disk that contains all the necessary drivers for the correct operation of the device. Usually, after installing Windows, it is enough to put this disk and start loading all programs.

If for some reason you do not have the opportunity to do this, then you need to go to the official website of the laptop manufacturer for software. If you have a laptop from the company, then you need to download the HP Software Framework. Asus has a set of programs called ATK Hotkey.

You may need to configure the buttons in the BIOS. In this menu, options for using combinations can be disabled. You need to go into it and find the appropriate section. Depending on the model, it may be labeled as System Configuration, Action Keys Mode, Function Key Behavior, etc.

Brightness setting

How to add brightness on a laptop monitor? To do this, you need to look at the laptop keyboard. The top row contains combo buttons, which, in addition to the designations F1-F12, also have icons. If you do not know what they mean, read the instructions.

The button to increase the brightness is indicated by the image of a large sun, but to decrease the brightness, you need to press the button with a smaller sun. By the way, the same logic for the two keys to adjust the volume.

But it will not be enough just to find these keys. They always work with a function button, which can be labeled as "Fn" or "Fx". It is located on the bottom row. Using a combination of two buttons, you can enable or disable a particular function.

On the laptop, you can adjust the brightness or volume, enable or disable the wireless network, touchpad, monitor, and sound. You can put your laptop to sleep.

In addition to the buttons, you can also use the software brightness setting. For example, sometimes you can find the corresponding icon in the tray. You can also go to the "Control Panel", select the "Power Options" setting, and in one of the power plans you can find a slider with adjustment.

Brightness adjustment is carried out in the Intel Graphic utility, which is almost always installed by default. After opening it, you can go to the monitor settings, where it is easy to change the contrast, gamma, brightness and other parameters.

To increase the battery life of your laptop, you can decrease the brightness of the display. But what to do if the screen brightness is not adjusted in the laptop? There are two ways to resolve this issue that is interfering with the normal use of the device.

Active Keys

Usually the problem occurs when trying to adjust the brightness using hot keys - for example, the Fn + F5 shortcut. In this case, you can configure the display settings for the image.

If you are using an HP or Lenovo laptop model, then the reason for the failure may be the Active Keys feature, which is enabled by default in the BIOS.

Thanks to this function, the keys from the F1-F12 row work without the Fn button. However, if the user does not know this, then he presses the Fn + F5 combination, and the brightness does not change. Therefore, the first tip is to try pressing the brightness adjustment key without combining it with the Fn button - just F5 and F6.

If it's hard for you to get used to this kind of "hot" keys, then just go to the BIOS and on the "System Configuration" tab, set the "Active Keys" parameter to "Disabled".

On Windows 10, you can adjust the brightness directly from the notification area. Just click on the battery icon to display, among other things, the brightness value of the display. In this case, no "hot" keys are needed. But if you still cannot do without keyboard control, then there is another way to fix the failure.

Driver installation

Hotkeys also have drivers, without which they cannot work correctly. You can download them on the official website of the laptop manufacturer, where the software for each model is located. The order is this:

If there are no drivers for the installed version of Windows for your laptop model, then try downloading the software for an earlier version. For example, if there are no drivers for Windows 10, install drivers for Windows 8.1. Another option is to find the right software from another laptop with similar specs. Laptops from the same model range may well fit.
