Batch processing of files is indispensable when working with a large number of images that require the same type of editing. Almost any routine processing operation (batch mode) can be performed much faster this way.

For graphic formats, various transformations are possible: from resizing and formatting an image, adding a watermark and text to applying effects and filters. It is noteworthy that many image viewing programs already have such functions built in. In addition, as an alternative, there are separate processing programs - converters.

Next, we will consider methods of batch processing of images by the level of complexity from the simplest to using the functions of such packages as Adobe photoshop and Adobe Lightroom. At the end of the review, there is a comparison table (Table 1) and a test of the conversion performance (Diagram 1).

Image Tuner

A simple program that works on the principle of "one window" and is not too complicated by the settings. Files for processing are added in the left part of the window, and conversion parameters are indicated on the right. Preview is available by clicking on the thumbnail image.

Conversion options include changing the hue, size, orientation of the image, adding a watermark. There are filters available, but they are so simple that they don't even have settings and for some reason are hidden in the "Resize" section. Half of the settings are in English, the rest is translated into Russian.

The number of formats for saving is small - only 5. At the input, Image Tuner supports such popular formats as JPEG, BMP, PNG, GIF, TIFF, as well as RAW, NEF and others.

So a very simple converter for the most basic image processing.

IrfanView, while being free and small in size, supports and includes converter functions available through the "Batch Conversion / Rename ..." menu. You can choose from one of three modes: batch rename, conversion and mixed.

About 20 formats are available for saving (menu “Output format”), while parameters are not available for each of them.

Selecting other transformations is possible only when you activate "Use advanced options ...", by pressing the "Advanced" button. The settings allow you to resize, crop the image, flip horizontally or vertically, add a watermark - a standard set for a graphics viewer.

However, in practice, it becomes clear that the "advanced" options are not intuitive at all: the point is that there are no preview windows (the preview in the main window refers to the original image). Of course, you can crop or resize a photo by pixel. But how to deal with filters for adjusting brightness, balance and other color parameters when you need to specify numbers? Based on the above, after applying the transformations and exiting "Advanced", the changes can be seen only after the end of the conversion. But for batch renaming of files, a test mode is available.

Thus, IrfanView cannot be called a convenient image converter. It can be used only for basic transformations that do not require preview: changing the orientation of the image, the size and format of saving.

AVS Image Converter is part of the AVS4You suite of image manipulation software. This is probably why the 27 MB distribution kit (which is not so small for a converter) includes the auxiliary utilities Software Navigator and Update Manager.

Supported image formats for writing - 8, for reading - a little more than 20. For processing, you can import photos from Flickr or Facebook accounts (after preliminary authorization).

The graphical interface is friendly to the inexperienced user: some functions are simplified or replaced by presets. When resizing an image, presets are available for different monitors and standard aspect ratios for photos, which is especially useful when publishing on the Internet.

There are few conversion settings (the "Correction" tab): changing the brightness, contrast, color temperature; blur / sharpness effects, adding texture. The extreme tab is "Watermark", which allows you to superimpose an image or text on the photo.

Most of all, the local batch conversion resembles IrfanView. But, unlike the latter, FastStone Photo Resizer is not so “hostile” towards the user and provides convenient advanced options.

The interface is divided into two parts - which is not very rational, since the area for selecting files takes up most of the workspace.

After adding images to the conversion queue, you can specify the output image format ("Output Format") and the save folder ("Output Folder").

To access the transformation tools, the "Use Advanced Options (Resize ...)" option is activated. The set of transformations is purely basic: resizing, perspective, adding text, water images, frames. Settings can be saved or loaded from a configuration file, just like in most of the programs being monitored. There is no preview window.

A tool for batch renaming of files has been placed in a separate tab "Batch Rename". In addition to the standard name change by mask, the “Search and Replace” function is interesting, with its help it is easy to correct the file name without completely changing the name.

XnConvert is a spin-off from the popular XnView image viewer. In fact, all the same actions performed in the XnConvert environment can be performed in XNView (see below), but the stand-alone converter has a number of differences. First of all, it is not meant to be viewed. On the one hand, nothing distracts from the functionality. On the other hand, if you need to find out the most basic information about the source file, you have to turn to another viewer program.

At the beginning of working with the program, you need to specify the files for processing (drag and drop is supported, you can also specify using the buttons). Please note that there are columns for sorting at the top. When you click on any of them in context menu you can choose from many other options - the list is huge. However, it would be more convenient if the files were displayed in the form of a table rather than thumbnails - then it would be convenient to view information about the source files, otherwise it simply does not exist, and the sorting is somewhat "conditional" - it is not clear what it is for.

The main tab where the list of transformations is collected is "Actions". For a free program, the number of settings is pleasantly surprising. Transformations are divided into 4 groups:

• Image is, for the most part, working with transformation and file properties.
• Correction - work with levels, color.
• Filter - Applying blur effects, sharpening, changing focus.
• Miscellaneous - for the most part, all the same effects.

The output tab contains options for saving processed files: name mask, location and graphic format. For popular formats (JPG, GIF, PNG, etc.), it is possible to specify additional saving parameters. There is an inconspicuous, but very useful option by export - you can upload processed photos to Picasa- or Flickr-account, pack or send via FTP or email.

Import / export of scripts (transformation settings) are available in the lower part of the window, the button "Load script".

A huge number of formats are also available for reading - more than 500 (of those supported by the XNView viewer), with the nuance that specific ones require the installation of GhostScript or a CAD plugin.

Briefly - about the possibilities of batch processing of photos in XnView. The settings window can be called through the menu "Tools - Batch processing ...".

First of all, the interface is different from XNConvert. Consists of only two tabs, the first one specifies the format and parameters of saving. The second tab contains a list of transformations, which, for activation and configuration, need to be added to the right side of the window. The ability to save scripts is also provided, but the format is not compatible with XnConvert: here XBS, in XNConvert - BAT.

Of course, the graphics package Adobe Photoshop has built-in necessary tools for batch photo conversion. Up-to-date on this moment version - CS6, CS5 is considered in the review. Processing can be done using actions (English "actions" - actions), Batch operations ("File - Automate - Batch ...") or the Image Processor script ("File - Scripts - Image Processor ...").

The first way

First, through the Actions palette, an action is recorded that will be applied to each image. It is best to take a "test sample" for this purpose. At this step, the list of possible transformations is limited only by means of Photoshop. Then the Action is saved to a certain set (Set). When finished, the action can be edited anywhere: for example, it can be optimized by removing unnecessary actions.

For mass application of an action, after recording and editing it, you need to go to the "File - Automate - Batch ..." menu. In the "Play" group of settings, the required action is selected, the source and destination folder are determined. Additionally, you can specify a mask for naming files.

Second way

Most often, the second processing method using the Image Processor script will be more acceptable. It is handy for simple actions such as changing the aspect ratio or resizing an image. The settings can be called through the menu "File - Scripts - Image Processor ...". The convenience of this approach is that you don't need to record the action. All other settings are almost the same as the above method. Saving is possible only in JPEG / PSD / TIFF.

In the program "Photoconverter" we could not find out the speed of work, because in the shareware version only 5 images can be processed.

Getting a lot of pictures in the age of digital cameras is not a problem, it is much more difficult to sort out your photo archive later, because it can store hundreds and thousands of images with meaningless names. Therefore, you cannot do without renaming photos, and this is one of the most time-consuming operations for organizing a photo collection. Renaming a photo manually is long and tedious, it is better to call for help applications for batch processing of images, with the help of which the named task is solved almost instantly.

But this is only one side of the issue. Pictures, depending on their purpose, have to be subjected to one or another additional processing. For example, if you intend to publish a photo on the Internet, then, as a rule, you cannot do without reducing the size, and in some cases - converting to another format and adding watermarks to the images. In addition, it may be necessary to carry out photo corrections in order to improve them (color correction, adjust contrast and saturation, etc.), as well as in the decoration of photographs. Of course, all these operations can be performed manually, but if there are a lot of pictures, it will be a truly titanic work. You shouldn't waste your time so pointlessly, it is better to carry out such routine operations in batch mode.

There are many software solutions on the market equipped with functionality for batch processing of images. This and graphic editor(including Adobe Photoshop, recognized by all professionals), and photo cataloguers (including the famous Adobe Lightroom and more modest products for the general user: Zoner Photo Studio, PicaJet, etc.), and various kinds of graphics viewers (IrfanView, XnView, etc.) ). However, simple routine operations for processing images are often more convenient to perform using specialized utilities for batch processing. Such utilities are very easy to use, compact, have an impressive conversion speed and are often free, and therefore useful to any user.

Renaming snapshots

The names assigned to images by the camera during shooting are completely uninformative - it is absolutely impossible to guess which picture is hidden, for example, under the name DSC02799.jpg. Therefore, when copying photos from the camera to the photo archive on HDD they are usually renamed to give descriptive names that “tell” when and where the photo was taken, what event is displayed on it, and so on. It is useful, for example, to indicate in the name of the picture the date (perhaps only the year and month) and the number of the frame - for example, 2011-09-05_0015.jpg or 2011-09_0015.jpg (15th frame taken on September 5, 2011 or in September 2011 ). It is also possible to add the name of a place or event to the name of the picture - the variant of the name of a specific photo from the group in this case may look like: Thailand_2011-09_0015.jpg.

As a rule, such renaming is carried out in batch mode. To rename a group of images, set the file name mask to general view... Typically, such a mask can use letters of the English alphabet, numbers, underscores and a series special characters, conventionally denoting the original file name, year and month of shooting, serial number, etc. (symbol designations may differ in different utilities).

For example, let's rename several photos with the utility FastStone Photo Resizer... Activate the tab Batch Rename, on the left side of the window, open the folder with the source files and add the images of interest to the list on the right side of the window. Please note that files on the left side of the window can be displayed as a list or as thumbnails, which is more convenient. After that, if necessary, you can open the next folder with the original images and re-select the photos for processing, etc. Then the file mask is entered in general form (in our case - Large_Patok_2011_07 _ ####). This will mean that the name of the place (Large_Patok) and the shooting date will appear in the name of each picture, and at the end there will be a sequence number of the frame. Now all that remains is to start the process by clicking on the Rename button (Fig. 1), and all the selected files will be renamed and saved in the original folder.

The renaming of images in other utilities that support this feature is approximately the same. However, in some solutions, more flexible schemes can be implemented, for example, in the program Rename master the type of names generated in batch mode is limited only by the user's imagination. There are no special difficulties in forming such names, although at first the utility's interface seems complicated, and the help leaves much to be desired. The principle of renaming files in Rename Master is step-by-step: the whole process is divided into many separate actions (delete characters at the beginning / end of a name, replace a number or text, add a certain set of characters to the beginning / end of a name, etc.). To perform a specific action, follow the tab Renaming Scripts activate the required script and correct its parameters in accordance with the task at hand, then carry out similar operations with respect to the next of the scripts of interest, etc. Let's consider this in practice to replace the names set by the camera in a series of shots (that is, names like DSC_0064.jpg) with names like Dacha_winter_2013_0021.jpg (21st frame, taken at the dacha in winter 2013). First, we sequentially delete the first three characters of the name (action Remove characters) and replace the snapshot number in accordance with the number of images in the processed folder and the shooting sequence (Replace numbers; Fig. 2). Note that in the panel preview(located in the right part of the program window) immediately displays the result of connecting any script, which allows you to make sure that the selected parameters are correct or incorrect. After that, add the text at the beginning of the name Dacha_winter_2013(Fig. 3) and complete the renaming by clicking on the Rename button. As a result, the entire group of files will be renamed in a matter of seconds. By the way, the date (as well as other information that is available in the file properties or meta-tags, it is not necessary to manually specify it at all, since this program implements the ability to connect the corresponding variables inside scripts (Fig. 4).

Preparing images for online publication

Many users publish their photos on various kinds of Internet resources and exchange pictures with friends and colleagues. e-mail... However, the photographic material shot in modern cameras "weighs" a lot and it takes quite a long time to upload a large number of images in their original form to your online photo album, even with the current speed of the Internet connection. And there is no point in this. Therefore, images intended for publication and online exchange are usually pre-scaled down to a web standard. In addition, in some cases, before publishing, you have to resort to converting images to another format in accordance with the requirements of a particular resource. It will also be useful to add watermarks to the images when posting them on the Web. Performing all these operations manually for a long time - faster to get the result, using the toolkit for batch image processing.

For example, in the Fotosizer utility, to change the size of a group of images in batch mode, in the simplest case, you just need to drag the images into the main program window (one by one or in bulk), specify the processing parameters: size (we have chosen a preset profile for sending by e-mail) and a folder to save, and then start the process (Fig. 5).

When it comes to a large number of images, it is no more difficult and even faster to reduce the size of images using the Photo Magician utility. However, dragging and dropping will not work here in normal operation - you will have to manually specify the source folder and destination folder. Then the processing parameters are determined (it is easier to select a profile for posting on the Web or viewing on a portable device of interest) - Fig. 6 - and start the process. The utility will spend a minimum of time on processing the images and, in addition, carefully offer to send the images to the Internet at the end, for example, to the Facebook photo album.

A more visual option for reducing the size of images (thanks to displaying a thumbnail with an indication of the base size) is implemented in the PIXresizer program. At the same time, the batch processing technology is approximately the same as in other utilities of this plan: you need to specify the source folder and source folder, determine the desired photo size (Fig. 7), if necessary, change the format and start the conversion process.

It is also easy to prepare thumbnail copies of images for online in the ImBatch program. It is enough to drag the original photos into the utility window, select the operation in the list of tasks Resize and set the desired size in certain units. After that, the operation of saving images ( Save as), indicate the bin and start the processing (Fig. 8).

In a similar way, other operations are performed, which sometimes also need to be carried out before publishing images on network resources, - converting and adding watermarks. With the conversion, everything is elementary, because here you just need to select the desired format and in some cases also adjust the conversion parameters. With watermarks (as a rule, this is the author's signature and / or his logo) a little more difficult - unlike professional solutions for the implementation of watermarks in the utilities under consideration, you cannot create watermarks themselves, you can only insert their ready-made images on transparent background... The possibilities for managing the display of such embedded watermarks are minimal here, the program boasts the greatest functionality in this regard. ImBatch(operation Watermark- rice. 9), which allows you to adjust not only the transparency level of the sign and its position, but also the scale, type of overlay and a number of other parameters.

Correction and artistic processing of images

We do not always like the obtained images. The reasons may be different: due to excessive noise, insufficient sharpness, due to poorly selected shooting parameters (for example, incorrectly set white balance or exposure), insufficient or excessive lighting when shooting, etc. Unfortunately, it is not always possible to shoot again and take better pictures, so some of the low-quality photographs have to be corrected. In particular, suppress noise, increase contrast, correct color distortions, increase detail in dark or light areas, increase sharpness, etc. There is no doubt that to obtain professionally designed images, such operations are performed using solid graphic products (such as Adobe Photoshop), moreover, as a rule, an individual approach to each image is assumed. However, if desired, you can process a specific series of images with the same shooting defects in batch mode. In some cases, you can use the appropriate batch image processing tools to improve amateur shots. However, counting on a miracle with such a correction, of course, is not worth it - at best, you will only be able to slightly improve the image.

You can try connecting the very easy-to-use XnConvert program to the case, which provides functionality for correcting levels, flattening histogram, lightening / darkening an image, changing exposure, adjusting color balance, etc. To quickly improve a group of images in it, you need to drag the images to the tab Input data(you can open files directly on this tab) and add on the tab Actions an interesting set of image correction operations. The result of the impact of any of the added operations will be immediately displayed in the preview window (for the first image from the group), and by changing the parameters, you can try to achieve some improvement in the image (Fig. 10). After that, the output data is determined on the tab of the same name, that is, the output folder is set, and, if necessary, the file name in general form and the extension are indicated if it is supposed to simultaneously carry out batch renaming and conversion. When finished, all that remains is to click on the button Convert- converted photos will appear in the specified output folder.

The utilities discussed in this article can also be useful in the simplest artistic processing of images, for example, for adding frames, applying filters and effects. The most interesting in this regard is the aforementioned XnConvert utility. For example, let's try to use it to turn an ordinary modern photo into an old photo in the “retro” style. In our case, we managed to achieve such a metamorphosis by using the “sepia” and “retro” effects in the program in combination with the vignette effect to darken the edges of the picture (Fig. 11).

The capabilities of all other solutions in this plan are an order of magnitude more modest - the corresponding capabilities in them are often represented by just a few simple filters. And it can be quite difficult to select the parameters of the effects in these programs, primarily because of the inconvenient preview. But all the same, this toolkit should not be discounted. For example, let's create a frame with a shadow for the images using the ImBatch utility. The procedure will be as follows: first, enable the operation Rounding the edges, then add the effect Soft shadow and when finished, turn on another effect Inner shadow... The first of the drop shadow effects will add soft outer shadows to the border of the image, and the second will create a shadow inside the border (Figure 12).

Finally, we will conduct another experiment - we will try to turn an ordinary picture taken in the Northern Urals into a Martian landscape, which, as you know, is distinguished by a peculiar reddish-brown color of the surface, scorched by the rays of the red-orange sun. Let's use the Image Tuner utility to carry out a similar operation. Technically, there is nothing complicated in processing, the original images are dragged into the utility window, the folder for saving the images is set in it and the necessary settings are selected. Of course, determining the size and format for images is as easy as shelling pears, difficulties arise in the process of selecting the values ​​of the parameters of brightness, contrast and saturation, as well as colorization parameters, which is important for us from the perspective of the problem being solved. The fact is that the selection is carried out in the full sense of the word at random until the desired effect is achieved, and each time after changing one or another parameter, you have to click on the file to update the image in the preview window (Fig. 13). However, in the end, if desired, all the same, you can achieve an acceptable result. Upon completion of the selection of settings, the conversion process is started (button Process images).

PIXresizer is a simple tool for resizing series of images in batch mode; can also be used for processing single photographs. The Image Viewer interface is quite simple and has Russian version... The program window is divided into two parts:

To make FastStone Image Viewer the default (default) viewer for all graphic files it is worth doing some small adjustments.

You can, of course, press right click mouse on each individual file format, select the item "Open with ..." and in the window that opens, specify FS Image Viewer, not forgetting to check the box "Use this program for all files of this type." However, there are many file formats and this process will take quite a long time.

Therefore, we will make all the settings inside the program itself. In the top menu, select the "Settings" tab, and then "Program Settings" or just click hotkey F12.

In the window that opens, we are primarily interested in the "View" tab, where on the right side, opposite the "Open associated file" item, you need to select "in windowed mode". This is the most convenient mode when opening a file for the first time, but you can always change it.

After this setting, go to the "Associations" tab, select all file formats and tick the "Add Browse to FastStone" item in the menu Windows Explorer". Then click OK.

Now you can close the program itself and open any picture double click mouse, it will automatically open in FS Image Viewer.

Batch Photo Processing in FastStone Image Viewer

Batch processing means that we can set certain parameters (size, format, volume, quality, etc.) for a large group of pictures or photographs and apply them to absolutely all pictures in the selected folder.

We launch the program itself by clicking on its shortcut, on the left side we indicate the folder with the photos that we want to process. After that, you will see all the photos from this folder on the right side. Click on the "Service" menu at the top, and already in it, select the "Batch conversion / rename" item.

And as I promised, this is where the whole Universe opens up for all sorts of experiments for converting files.

At the top of the window itself, you can see two tabs: Batch Convert and Batch Rename. Let's consider the first tab.

On the "Batch Conversion" tab, we can change formats, sizes, change file names and much, much more.

On the left side of the window, we can see a list of all our pictures or photos. To process them in batches, you need to click the Add All button. After that, all files will move to the right side. All other settings we will do in the lower right part of the window.

In the "Output format" field, you can set the format of the files that we want to receive. Slightly to the right of this field there is a button "Settings", where you can set additional settings.

In the "Output folder" field, specify the folder where all files will be saved after processing.

We tick the box "Change settings (dimensions ...)" and the "Advanced" button becomes active by clicking on which the corresponding window will open.
