About ten or fifteen years ago, in one of the IT publications I came across a very interesting figurative comparison of the activity of a system administrator running around the office from computer to computer with a box of CDs and floppy disks, with the work of a weaver with a lot of stationery (remember the famous footage from the movie "The Bright Path"?). However, even today IT specialists in some companies work in this way - after all, workstations are often configured directly at the workplaces where they are installed. The main reason for this ineffective approach is that through the means remote control computers embedded in modern client and server operating systems cannot perform all the operations required to support users. The optimal scenario for supporting workstations and servers, of course, would be completely remote administration, which allows not to run around the office, not to travel to branches and not to freeze in the server room.

Systems Integration and Development Companies software, in addition to the listed tasks, often provide technical support to their customers or deploy new versions of the deployed applications from them. To do this, you usually have to go to the customer's office, and it would be beneficial for both the customer and the contractor to do without such visits. This is especially true for companies operating ATMs and payment terminals - after all, they are distributed over a large area, are connected with cash and are located in public places, which means that not only an IT specialist, but also security is needed to maintain them.

Recently, many companies, in addition to administration, are faced with the need to organize remote work for users who need access to their workstation or resources. corporate network during a business trip or from home. Such a mode of operation contributes to better data safety - because if data of commercial value does not physically leave the office of the company, then it cannot be stolen along with the employee's laptop (as you know, theft of laptops is one of the most common channels of confidential data leakage).

Speaking about the safety of data, we note that in some companies it makes sense to control the activities of employees on corporate computers, for example, in order to prevent leakage of confidential data or misuse of corporate resources.

We also note the increasing use of online learning, which saves a lot of money by eliminating travel expenses. Distance learners can be scattered all over the world and do not have to gather in one place. And online presentations and meetings are no longer exotic anymore.

All of these tasks require tools for remote computer management. Of course, there are such tools in modern operating systems, but they are far from always optimal in terms of speed and ease of use.

What should be the best tool for remote computer management

What should be a remote computer control tool that solves the listed tasks? Ideally, it should not only connect to a remote computer (for this there are terminal access tools available in one form or another in all modern operating systems), but also be able to connect in cases where the computer is frozen, allow changes in the BIOS, remotely download or install an operating system, use multiple connections to one computer. At the same time, the tool for remote control of computers must provide sufficient image quality for comfortable administration and high speed of its transfer, support for various screen resolutions, and also be able to exchange text and voice data with a controlled computer (with users whose technical support is carried out remotely, because you need something communicate…). And, since we are talking about ATMs and payment terminals, the protection of transmitted data and means of differentiating access rights should completely exclude the possibility of their leakage.

In this article we will tell you about one of these tools - the Radmin system from the Russian company Famatech.

What Radmin can do

Radmin is very familiar to many IT professionals and is well-earned in companies of all sizes and industries. Its third version is now available.

Principle of operation

The way Radmin works is pretty simple. The product consists of two parts: the licensed Radmin Server application, which is installed on the computer to be administered remotely, and free app Radmin Viewer, installed on the computer from which the administration is carried out, and these two applications communicate with each other. You can use Radmin in both local network and via the Internet.

How Radmin works

Radmin Server supports all modern 32- and 64-bit Windows operating systems, namely Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows Server 2008/2008 R2, Windows Server 2003, Windows 2000 Server. And Radmin Viewer can be run under the control of not only the above systems, but also Windows emulators: Wine for Linux and Parallels for Mac OS. This allows remote access using Radmin from computers equipped with Linux or Mac OS.

Radmin functionality

What can Radmin do compared to Windows terminal access?

It allows you to connect to a remote computer in modes full access, view only, file sharing, reboot / shutdown, text and voice chats, command line editing the BIOS with Intel technology AMT, as well as in the mode of sending instant text notifications.

Radmin has a simple and intuitive user interface, quite familiar to users, including those who have not previously used terminal access tools or virtual machine management tools.

Radmin user interface

Note that Radmin optimizes the transmitted traffic by sending only changes to the image on the screen, not the entire image. In addition, this product supports any screen resolution and multiple monitors, as well as smooth color depth changes from black and white (for minimal traffic) to full color (for accurate color reproduction). At the same time, the data transfer uses an intelligent compression algorithm that automatically adjusts the compression level for the channel bandwidth and processor load, providing an accurate correlation between the processor load and the bandwidth of the data transmission channel. This sets Radmin apart from the built-in remote worker access tools. Windows desktop starting with Windows 7. The minimum color depth for image transmission when accessing a remote desktop is 16 bits, which significantly increases network traffic.

Radmin allows you to make several simultaneous connections to one remote computer and one computer to several and switch between user sessions, which again favorably distinguishes it from the means of accessing the remote Windows desktop, since in the client Windows versions with such a connection, the user's session is blocked, and from the built-in Remote Assistant tools, which require the mandatory presence of the user of the controlled computer and do not allow either transferring files or launching applications on behalf of account with administrator rights.

Other useful features include two-way work with the clipboard with Unicode support and a built-in computer scanner in the address book of the computer on which Radmin Viewer is installed. In addition, for administrators is available free program Radmin Deployment Package, with which you can quickly and easily install Radmin on thousands of computers, configure access rights, activate or update Radmin.

Security

From a security standpoint, Radmin is an extremely reliable product. Protection of absolutely all transmitted data (including screen images, cursor movements and keyboard signals) in all connection modes is carried out according to the modern AES data protection standard, which excludes the possibility of confidential information leakage. User authentication is performed using Windows security with support for Active Directory and Kerberos. In addition, Radmin also uses its own built-in Radmin Security authentication system with individual access rights that allow access only for certain computers and subnets.

Radmin Security: IP filtering

Note that Radmin includes protection against guessing passwords, such as activating time delays for suspected brute-force passwords and blocking suspicious IP addresses.

Radmin supports the ability to request a connection to a remote computer to protect against unauthorized access.

Radmin Server 3 runs exclusively as a service operating system, which excludes the possibility of access to it without the appropriate rights. In addition, Radmin includes self-test routines that protect program code from changes, which makes it resistant to malicious code.

Security system Radmin Security:
differentiation of access rights

Finally, Radmin Server actively protects the settings stored in system registry... Only a user with administrator rights has access to this registry key.

Who uses Radmin

As already mentioned, Radmin is used in many industries. However, it is most often used in the banking sector for remote servicing of ATMs and payment terminals, as well as for maintaining and configuring computers in a distributed banking network, including in a number of major Russian banks, in retail networks for managing and monitoring POS terminals, as well as in government structures (city administrations, city halls, federal government bodies) and many commercial structures in which monitoring of the activities of employees and their remote training to work with modern software are relevant.

Many companies also use Radmin to remotely access office resources using inexpensive netbooks. Such solutions, as already mentioned, reduce the risk of confidential information leakage. In addition, a netbook that can work with the very resource-demanding Radmin Viewer application costs much less than a regular laptop, and, which is also important, it weighs much less.

On this moment Radmin has been translated into 27 languages and is marketed and deployed by more than 5,000 Famatech partners around the world. All users are provided with free technical support. Radmin's license, which is important, is perpetual, and educational institutions can purchase this product at a discounted price.

So, we got acquainted with the Radmin remote administration tool. I can't help but notice that thanks to the enhanced capabilities of supporting data exchange between the control and controlled computers and reliable security tools, the scope of application of this product is very diverse today and includes not only remote administration of computers, payment terminals and ATMs, but also technical support for users, monitoring of actions employees, online presentations and seminars, distance learning, remote work. Note that Radmin was originally created multilingual, and the fact that its manufacturer is located in Russia means that there will be no problems with incorrect localization, which, alas, are common to many foreign products. I believe that Russian IT specialists should pay close attention to this solution.

With the help of Radmin, an administrator can fully monitor user actions, as well as perform certain operations remotely, even while in another country. Radmin, which is published in Russia under the 1C: Distribution brand, is a remote administration tool for Windows operating systems.

Control over employees is an integral part of the workflow in the company. The computer network, the operation of servers and network equipment must be monitored by a full-time system administrator. But century information technologies greatly simplified this process, allowing a person to be at a remote distance from the computer and office. With the help of the program, the administrator can fully monitor the actions of users, as well as perform certain operations remotely, even while in another country.

Radmin server component

Program Radmin (Remote Administrator), which is published in Russia under the brand name "1C: Distribution", is a tool for remote administration in operating systems of the Windows family. There are two components of the program - server (Server) and managed (Viewer). The first is installed on the computer you want to monitor, while the second, in turn, serves to control the server side.

Let's take a closer look at the server side. It all starts with the installation of this component, it goes quickly and without any problems. After completing the installation process, the user will be prompted to configure Radmin Server for yourself. The first thing to choose is the startup mode. If you plan to use the server part all the time and you always need access to the computer, then it is better to use automatic start applications. If the situation is the opposite, then it makes sense to set the manual start mode.

The number of server settings is not so much, they are all intuitive. The main ones are the port (which is set by default, but it is possible to change it), a confirmation request for incoming connections and the display of the program icon in the tray. The user can also disable some functions of the program, thereby outlining the range of tasks that can be performed by the user connected to his computer. There is a built-in IP filter and sections for fine-tuning text and voice chat. With the help of this filter, you can outline the circle of those IP addresses from which you can connect to the computer, in addition to this, you can specify not only ranges, but also specific "IP addresses".

To increase the security of working with the program, the authentication of incoming connections is included. Usernames and passwords are created in the access rights, as well as the rights to control the computer are set. In addition to individual names, whole groups can be organized according to the type of how it is implemented in the operating room. Windows system in the form of Active Directory. When using the IP filtering table and authentication at the same time, when connecting to the server, the program will check the correctness of the specified parameters and if the IP address, login and password are correct, then the third-party user will be allowed access, otherwise the connection will be reset.

Several computers can simultaneously connect to the server side, all connections can be viewed by clicking on the icon located in the system tray.

Radmin control component

Second component software product is called and is just a control environment Radmin Server.

All addresses are stored in the address book, items of folders and remote computers can be easily distinguished by icons. To create a new connection, you must enter the IP address of the computer or its Domain name... There is also an analogue of a proxy server in the program - the connection is made through an intermediate server, which can be selected from the available list, while the IP address of the final server will be displayed in the list of connections. Through you can fully control the remote machine. An image is displayed in the program window work area computer. Mouse cursor control is transferred to the administrator. This function indispensable in situations where the inexperience of the user does not allow him to fix the problem on his own, if at the same time the departure of the system administrator is impossible or difficult.

When working in full control mode, it is necessary to configure the program in such a way that the speed of the Internet connection does not interfere with the work. Therefore, one of the most important parameters is to optimize image quality. The color depth can be in the range from 1 to 24 bits. Experimenting with the settings will help you get the most out of your experience. Also important is the frame rate when transmitting an image, respectively, the higher it is, the less noticeable the "jerking" of the cursor.

Voice or text chat can be organized between the two connected machines. In a text chat, the user indicates his nickname and optimizes the display of messages for himself. Due to the fact that the connection is possible between several machines, all connected users will be displayed in the chat. Voice chat adjusts the speed limit of your connection so that the program can optimize the transmission of voice information with the least loss, while maintaining high-quality sound.

Everything is strictly according to the regime

Earlier we talked about one of the interaction modes - the control mode. In it, the administrator can use the keyboard and mouse, while the entered text, the movement of the cursor will be transmitted in real time, without delays. The image of the remote computer is displayed either in a separate window or in full screen. To exit the full screen mode, a special panel is provided that is displayed on the desktop. The next mode is designed to monitor the operation of the computer. The limitation is the impossibility to control the workstation, text transmission from the keyboard or mouse movement is impossible, we only observe the user's work. This mode is the most favorite among bosses who want to see what their employee is doing at any time - whether he works or spends time on a social network.

For advanced users, a command line mode is provided. Here, all work is done through telnet and it is very difficult to figure it out without knowing the commands. Nevertheless, this solution also has an undeniable advantage - at very low speeds, working through the command line seems to be the most convenient. In this case, data is transferred quickly due to its small volume.

The next opportunity was allocated by the developers in a separate mode. It is a file transfer between two computers. The component resembles the classic two-panel file managers... Copying, cutting, selection of all files can be done using hot keys, as well as "drag and drop".

Output

Developing from simple application, has grown into a full-fledged commercial project that is extremely popular in Russia. The program includes a set of relevant functions that greatly simplify the work of a manager and a system administrator. You can contact the partners of the 1Soft network.

It allows you to connect to a remote computer in full access, browse only, file sharing, reboot / shutdown, text and voice chats, command line, BIOS editing using Intel AMT, and send instant text notifications.

Radmin has a simple and intuitive user interface that is quite familiar to users, including those who have never used terminal access tools or virtual machine management tools.

This distinguishes Radmin from the built-in tools for accessing the remote desktop of Windows, starting with Windows 7. The minimum color depth for image transmission when accessing the remote desktop is 16 bits, which significantly increases network traffic.

Radmin allows you to make several simultaneous connections to one remote computer and one computer to several and switch between user sessions, which again favorably distinguishes it from the means of accessing the remote Windows desktop, since in client versions of Windows, when such a connection is made, the user session is blocked, and from the built-in Remote Assistant, which requires the presence of the user of the managed computer and does not allow either transferring files or running applications as an account with administrator rights.

Other useful features include two-way work with the clipboard with Unicode support and a built-in computer scanner in the address book of the computer on which Radmin Viewer is installed. In addition, the free Radmin Deployment Package is available for administrators to easily and quickly remotely install Radmin on thousands of computers, configure access rights, activate or update Radmin.

In addition, Radmin uses its own built-in Radmin Security authentication system with individual access rights that allow access only to specific computers and subnets.

Radmin Security: IP filtering

Note that Radmin includes protection against guessing passwords, such as activating time delays for suspected brute-force passwords and blocking suspicious IP addresses.

Radmin supports the ability to request a connection to a remote computer to protect against unauthorized access.

Radmin Server 3 runs exclusively as an operating system service, which makes it impossible to access it without the appropriate rights. In addition, Radmin includes self-testing routines that protect your code from changes, making it resistant to malicious code.

differentiation of access rights

Finally, Radmin Server actively protects the settings stored in the system registry.

Currently, Radmin has been translated into 27 languages and is sold and implemented by more than 5,000 Famatech partners around the world.
