Most laptops have a full-size keyboard with a numeric keypad on the right. But to use these buttons, you must first turn on the side unit. This can be done using the key Num lock or in combination with the Fn button, via the on-screen keyboard or in the BIOS settings.
Using hotkeys
To turn on the numbers on the right (this block is also called the Numpad), find and press the Num Lock button. On the external input device, when this button is pressed, the indicator lights up, under which a number is drawn. On the laptop, no indicator will light up, but the digital block should work.
If the laptop does not have the Num Lock key, enable the Numpad with the Fn function key. Look at the row of keys F1-F12: the images should indicate which combination is used to activate the number pad on the right. Often, the Fn + F11 combination allows you to enable the right keyboard with numbers, but there may be other options. 
Some laptops use the Fn + Alt combination - for example, this is how Numpad is turned on on Sony laptops. Using the onscreen keyboard
If there is no Num Lock key on the laptop, and you cannot turn on the Numpad with numbers using a combination of FN and another button, then try using the on-screen keyboard to activate the block. It is a dedicated system tool that completely replaces the physical input device when it is missing.
A panel with keys will appear on the screen, which completely repeats the view of the physical input device. Numpad on the on-screen keyboard should also be; if there is no block with numbers, open the parameters and mark the item that responds to the activation of the Numpad.
A virtual Num Lock button should appear next to the numbers, after clicking on which the block on the right will work. You can enter numbers both from the on-screen keyboard using the mouse and from a physical device. To turn off the block with numbers, click again in virtual keyboard by the Num Lock button.
BIOS setup
In the most difficult cases, enabling the numbers on the keyboard to the right will not work without changing the BIOS settings. Fortunately, this requirement is not so common, but it is better to be aware of this possibility.
The hardest part of this procedure is getting into the BIOS. Most modern laptops implement quick start, so you may simply not have time to press the desired key. This can be fixed by temporarily disabling Fast Startup.

Try the most standard option - look for a button labeled Num Lock on your keyboard. As a rule, it is located in the upper left position of the key group of the numeric keypad. Pressing the key should turn on this group, if the NumLock indicator was not lit before, and otherwise, pressing it, on the contrary, turns off the numeric keypad. If your laptop model does not provide such a key, then go to the next step.
Check to see if the numeric keypad is enabled by pressing fn + f11. Typically, this combination is used on laptop models that do not have a separate group. number keys... This program from the standard set of Windows applications is called on the screen from the main menu, so open it and go to the "All Programs" section. In this section, go to the "Standard" subsection, then to the "Accessibility" section and select the "On-screen keyboard" item in it. You can also do without the main menu - press the win and r buttons at the same time, then type osk and press enter. In the interface that opens, find the key indicated by the letters nlk, and click it with the mouse - numeric keypad will be activated.
NumPad is a special area of the keyboard designed for easier input of numbers, which are arranged in the same order as on conventional calculators. Also, when the Numlock mode is turned off, these keys can be used in computer games.

Use them when you have a laptop with a shortened keyboard, and you often have to use applications that use numbers and mathematical signs in your work, for example, a calculator or "1C Accounting". Also, the keys from the numeric keypad are often used in various games, usually they will perform some functions when the Num Lock mode is off, for example, the functions of the arrow keys, and so on. It is also convenient to use them in conventional computers if a shortened keyboard option is available. In some cases, a separate Num Pad is even more convenient than the one built into the side keyboard.
It is convenient to use the keys of the additional or numeric keypad for filling spreadsheets with numerical data, making calculations on a software calculator, etc. In addition, the buttons of this keyboard can be used for navigation - moving the mouse pointer across the screen, the input cursor over the edited document, etc.

Whether your laptop has a numeric keypad or not, it's not always on. And the Num Lock key, which is designed to activate it in standard keyboards, may simply be missing. How can I turn it on or off?
There are three ways to do this. One of them will definitely suit you.
1. Press the Num Lock key. If it is, it is usually located at the top right of the entire keyboard. More precisely, somewhere on the upper left of the numeric keypad. Sometimes, during its activation, a special indicator turns on, the same as for the key. Caps lock... Don't look for it for a long time, it may not be there either.
2. The combination of keys Fn + F11. Most often, this combination works on those laptops where there is no numeric keypad at all. More precisely - it is combined with the main block of keys. The Fn + F11 combination changes the functionality of the right keyboard block from numeric to normal and vice versa. In rare cases, it activates / deactivates a separate sector of the numeric keys.
By the way, on different laptops the combination may differ, for example, not Fn + F11, but Fn + F10 or Fn + Fn12. Try it. Just be careful when doing such an experiment. You can change other parameters, such as mute the sound, lock the keyboard, turn off the screen, and more. Just trying it, press the key combination twice to deactivate some function and immediately activate it back.
3. Screen keyboard. This method is the simplest, most original and at the same time effective. I bought a laptop Acer aspire... There is an additional keyboard, but there is no Num Lock, and combinations with Fn are intended for other tasks. I hovered over turning on the numeric keypad until I came across this elegantly simple method.
Open the on-screen keyboard. It usually displays the actual state of your real keyboard. That is, it may also not display both the number pad and the Num Lock key. In this case, on the on-screen keyboard, click on the "Parameters" key. A window will open where you need to check the box to enable the numeric keypad. We turn on and see that the digital block has appeared. Next, click on Num Lock. Voila, the keyboard is activated.

The side keyboard is more commonly referred to as numeric or optional. This is a group of keys to the right of the main keyboard. In the standard version, it consists of seventeen keys and includes nine buttons with numbers, as well as signs of four mathematical operations, a dividing point, an enter key and an activation button for this keyboard. Most of these keys have a double functional purpose.

If you look closely at the laptop keys, you will notice that some of them, in addition to the usual letters, numbers and symbols, have icons that many do not understand. Usually these icons are made in a different color from the basic symbols on the keys. In addition, a laptop usually has a separate key, which is marked with two symbols - "Fn", these symbols can also be in a frame. The "Fn" key and the icons that I will talk about today in this article are usually painted the same color. As you probably guessed by now, these buttons are related to each other.
By itself, the "Fn" button is called functional, which means that it activates additional functions of the laptop. The combination "Fn", respectively, is an abbreviation for the word Function and reads "Funkshin". Pressing this button in combination with the keys on which there are additional icons (in my case, blue) activates the functions, the meaning of which corresponds to the symbol shown.
