What actions will help in this situation, what is worth knowing and understanding for novice users, how to install a driver for Wi-Fi on a laptop, we will consider in as much detail as possible in this article.

The device driver is responsible for its correct functioning

Per correct work each component in our personal devices under Windows control a special type of software called a driver is responsible. It defines how specific hardware will function, how it will interact with the OS and the programs installed in it. The manufacturer that produces the laptop can install the driver for each individual component, but in some situations the user will have to do this himself. This applies to every, even the smallest component of your PC. The Wi-Fi adapter is no exception. It is he who is responsible for the connection and high-quality operation of a PC with a Wi-Fi network.

  • If you have installed new hardware in your laptop or added any additional component that was not supplied as standard.
  • If you installed a new operating system.
  • If the manufacturer has released more than new version driver.

In all of these situations, you may find the instructions in this article useful. In each of these situations, you will need to install a new driver. We will consider installing the driver using the example of a Wi-Fi adapter, since users encounter problems with this procedure most often.

How to check if the Wi-Fi driver is installed and working

Once users have problems connecting the laptop to wireless network, we recommend that you make sure that the corresponding adapter in your computer is turned on, the driver for it is installed and the device is working correctly.

To do this, the first step is to try to turn on Wi-Fi on a laptop mechanically. The fact is that in many models running Windows, in order to further save battery power, the laptop provides for a quick turn off and on Wi-Fi using a special physical switch on the case or a keyboard shortcut. Some manufacturers use a combination for this function key Fn and the F2 or F3 buttons. You can find this information from the manual for a specific laptop model.

When an attempt is made to turn it on, you need to use the Windows operating system to check the functionality of this component in your laptop, and also to clarify whether there is a driver in the system that is responsible for the correct operation of the Wi-Fi network card, and whether it works properly. You can get all this information and find out the status of the wireless network adapter in the Manager Windows devices... Find in this manager network adapters and check their properties. If any of them is disabled by software or the corresponding software is not installed for it, you will see an information message and warning icons.

In any of these situations, you need to go to the next step, which will resolve Wi-Fi connection problems and install required driver.

How to find the right compatible driver

In order to find the most suitable driver for the wireless Wi-Fi network adapter installed in your laptop, we recommend that you familiarize yourself with the most complete model specifications on the manufacturer's website or use special software.

Laptops of the same model released at different times may have a Wi-Fi network adapter from different manufacturers and suppliers, which automatically means that completely different drivers must be installed. To find out the manufacturer Wi-Fi adapter, the easiest and fastest way is to use the free HWVendorDetection utility for Windows. It does not require installation, and it is quite easy to find it on the Internet. After the utility shows the manufacturer of the network adapter, you need to go to its website and, choosing the version of the operating system installed in the laptop, download the latest driver for today.

When finding out the model of equipment, searching for compatible software and automatically installing the driver, all kinds of software solutions... They are known more as collections of drivers or driverpacks. Most often, they independently offer to search, download, install and update software for various hardware components, but they do it completely automatically. Sometimes this can lead to the fact that an inappropriate driver will be installed or it will not be found at all. A similar system automatic model recognition and driver download works in the OS itself, starting with Windows 7, but the correct software version is not always found, and the operation of the equipment may not be completely stable.

That is why we recommend that you search for the driver manually and it is most preferable to do this on the manufacturer's website. The largest and most self-respecting manufacturers release software updates quite regularly, improving the operation of equipment, including Wi-Fi adapters.

How to properly install or update the Wi-Fi driver

If you use a special software most likely, you will not need any special skills in order to install the driver wireless adapter... Such programs do everything on their own and in the future, many of them are able to background check for updates and notify users about them. Unfortunately (or fortunately), this functionality and its reliable correct work can boast only the largest and exclusively paid software products... Free counterparts can sometimes install an incompatible version of the software, do not know how to notify about the availability of updates and are overloaded with advertising.

If you were not too lazy and visited the website of the manufacturer of your laptop or network adapter and downloaded the most recent version of software for Windows, installation is performed by running the executable file.exe and strictly following the instructions of the installer. In this case, you can be sure that you install the latest version on your computer, adapted specifically for your Windows build, which means that the adapter will work with guaranteed quality. The only drawback of this method is that you have to monitor new updates yourself, visiting the manufacturer's website at regular intervals.

Installing the driver manually

If, after downloading the software for your wireless network adapter, you find a zip archive with a lot of incomprehensible files in the downloads, or there is no executable file.exe among the downloads, most likely you will need manual installation driver. Below we give step by step instructions showing how exactly this can be done.

  • Extract all files from the downloaded archive and move them into one folder, signing it with any name that is most convenient and understandable to you.
  • Start Windows Device Manager.
  • Select a network adapter that does not have a driver or is not working correctly.
  • Open up context menu (right key mouse) and select Delete. This procedure will remove the existing driver and help avoid conflicts between the old and new software during the manual installation procedure.
  • Select the target adapter again, click on it (this must be done right click mouse) and select the "Update drivers" option.
  • Among the two suggested actions, select "Search for drivers on this computer."
  • The system will prompt you to indicate a specific place in file system Windows to search for a driver. Specify the folder created a few steps earlier so that the system can install the software on its own.

After installing any such software update, we recommend that you restart your computer. This will help the system to tune in the optimal way, to activate the equipment that has been disabled. In case of incompatible software versions or incorrect operation, the hardware can be turned off by Windows itself and will start only after a reboot.

Wi-Fi has become a convenient tool these days. wireless... Almost all modern gadgets have access to an Internet connection with using Wi-Fi(even economy options are equipped with this function) - after all, you can't do without Wi-Fi now. You will only be able to connect to a wireless network when there is a driver. People who come across the concept of "Wi-Fi drivers" face a lot of difficulties, and the most important questions are about where to download drivers and how to install them correctly.

Why you may need a driver for distributing "Wi-Fi"

Initially, the laptop has a Wi-Fi adapter that can connect to some kind of stationary computer. Its main job is to connect to Wi-Fi networks which we basically do. But, they are also equipped with a reverse function - Wi-Fi distribution. Sometimes users are faced with the fact that for some reason the driver for wifi on the laptop is not installed or is simply not compatible.

Driver availability
Very often, after reinstalling Windows, it is not possible to connect to the Internet, which often indicates that the adapter is missing. Sometimes Windows 7 and 8 independently recognize the adapter and download the driver for it themselves.

To check, open the control panel, go to "device manager". Next, go to the "network adapters" tab when you open it and see all the drivers available on your laptop.

There are only two options here:

  1. There is no wifi driver in principle. Installation required windows driver wifi. Download it.
  2. The driver is installed, but for some reason it does not function.

Where to download the driver

It doesn't matter what brand of your laptop: aspire, asus, acer, samsung, hp, lenovo or some other - it's better to download the wifi driver from a reliable and trusted resource (they can be downloaded for free).

Video

But here, too, difficulties may arise, since the adapters from the same manufacturer may differ. You may need to download a driver for realtek, or for intel. A good HWVendorDetection program may be required to solve this problem.

Driver update

Before installing a new driver, you must first remove the old one, and then proceed with the installation.

Sometimes, when updating, you may need manual setting... The easiest way to do this is in the device manager, just click the "update" button.

Installation

Installation is most often automatic, but if you are installing the driver downloaded yourself, then run setup.exe as usual with any installation and follow the simple instructions.

Removing the driver

The driver is removed simply in the device manager. Don't forget to confirm the deletion.

Download the Wi-Fi driver to your laptop, install it following the instructions above, remember that normal Wi-Fi operation is impossible without it. Download only from a trusted source to keep your device secure.

In the process of writing various articles on the topic Wi-Fi settings in Windows 7, there are a lot of incomprehensible moments and questions with Wi-Fi driver adapter. For example, you write about connecting to a wireless network, but a person does not find at all on his computer wifi... The same thing happens when you try, if the driver is not installed on the Wi-Fi adapter, then virtual network it will not work. Many people simply do not understand what to do next when the information from the article is different about what is happening on the monitor.

Look, there is a laptop, it should definitely have a built-in Wi-Fi adapter. Even take laptops that are already 5 years old or more, not to mention modern models. If you have stationary computer, and you want to connect to the Internet wirelessly, then this can be done via USB, or a PСI adapter. Windows 7 was installed on your laptop or desktop PC. Wizards, or yourself - it doesn't matter. The main thing is that Windows 7 itself does not install the driver on the Wi-Fi adapter. (I have not noticed such cases, here Windows 10 already installs automatically)... It turns out that if the wizards who installed the operating system for you did not install the driver on the Wireless adapter, then, accordingly, Wi-Fi will not work for you. And if the network cable is not connected to the laptop, then the connection status will most likely be as follows:

In settings: Control Panel \ Network and Internet \ Network Connections you most likely will not see the adapter "Wireless network connection" , and in the device manager, on the network adapters tab, there will be only one adapter - the network card. You won't find a wireless adapter there.

These are all signs that the correct driver is not installed. The solution is very simple, install the wireless adapter driver yourself. Below, I will try to tell you in detail how to do this using an example.

Windows 7: self-installation of the driver on Wi-Fi

It doesn't matter if you have a laptop or a stationary PC with an adapter, the required driver can be on the disk that comes with the same laptop or adapter. As practice shows, there may not be such a disk with a laptop, but with an adapter, it is most likely included. With Tp-Link adapters - definitely there. So, you can try to install the driver from this disk. Just insert the disc into your computer drive and follow the instructions (as a rule, a window prompting you to install the software will appear automatically).

We need a driver for the Wireless adapter. Therefore, the most The best way, this one is guided by the word "Wireless", or "WLAN". There may be something like Wireless Network Adapter and the like.

How to download the correct driver for the Wireless adapter from the Internet?

In the case when there is no disk, or you cannot figure it out, then the required driver can be downloaded from the Internet. Perhaps you are not connected to the Internet, but Wi-Fi is not working. Do not forget that you can connect via network cable... Both through a router and directly from the provider. Or, you can download the driver on another device (even on a smartphone, tablet) and upload it to your computer.

I cannot show you how to do this for all laptop manufacturers. (maybe later I will prepare such articles): Lenovo, HP, Asus, Acer, etc. I will show in detail using my laptop as an example Asus K56CM... The procedure will be the same for everyone. If you have a PC with a USB / PCI adapter, then you need to download the driver from the official website of the adapter manufacturer.

I recommend downloading drivers only from the manufacturers' official websites. Therefore, first of all, we need to go to the website of the manufacturer of our laptop (adapter). In my case, to the Asus website. You can just google it. I search for "Asus", and the first in the list is the official site. I think you will immediately understand this when you open the site. And if you know the address of the site, then you can go directly.

Further, through the search on the site, or through the menu, we need to find a page with the model of our laptop. Or, find the section with downloading drivers. As a rule, this is the "Support" menu item. In my case, with Asus laptop, I specify the model in the search on the site Asus K56CM and select it in the search results.

I go to the tab Support - Drivers and utilities... I select my operating system from the list - Windows 7.

I look for and open the Wireless tab and download the driver for my adapter.

We save the file to the computer, preferably to the desktop, so as not to lose it.

It may be that you see several drivers for different adapters (different manufacturers)... As in my case, there is a driver for the "Intel" adapters, and the "Atheros Wireless Lan Driver and Application". How do you know which adapter is on your laptop? For this there is a small program HWVendorDetection. Which you can download. Download HWVendorDetection and just run it. The manufacturer of the Wireless LAN adapter will be listed there.

The process of installing the downloaded driver

And then everything is very simple. If you have a driver in the archive, as in my case, then just open the archive and run setup file... This is most likely the setup.exe file. Just follow the installation instructions.

That's all, after installing the driver, it is advisable to restart the laptop, and you can.

Let me remind you what I showed on the example of Asus laptops. Your process may be slightly different. If you can't find the driver you need, or you can't install it, then write in the comments, I'll try to suggest. And one more thing, if you just want to update the driver to a newer one (reinstall), then I advise you to do everything according to this instruction. The manufacturer's website always has the newest drivers.
