But since I was born in the 80s, and got married when I was already over thirty, I didn't like this tradition very much. I didn't think at all about what surname I would wear when we met and were engaged. For thirty-two years of my life, I was under my maiden name and did not really think about it. When we signed, I thought about my husband's surname. I liked it more than mine, because: firstly, it is easier to pronounce; and secondly, I wanted to avoid some questions in case we have joint children. Plus, I wanted to do something nice for my husband, so I decided to change to his last name.

Then I didn't even think about how my new surname might affect me and, more importantly, my state of mind. Changing a surname takes a lot of wasted time, and the process itself causes a lot of unpleasant emotions and irritation, and the result is not comparable to the efforts made. I never thought that my name could mean more to me than just the way people start talking to me. Now, after almost three years have passed, I have become the same again, and it does not matter what surname I wear - this is the problem. Below I want to tell you why I think I made a mistake when I decided to take my husband's surname.

Wanting to marry a person does not mean wanting to become that person.

I made the decision to marry this particular man, because I love and respect him and because I believed that he would become an excellent life partner for me. The balance that exists between two very different people makes us an amazing team. Why then do I need to change my last name? Our differences make us stronger. And one of these differences, no matter how illogical it may seem, and there are different surnames.

My last name is inextricably linked with my personality

I have been living under my last name for the last 32 years of my life. With her, I had to overcome countless obstacles, as well as celebrate many life achievements. With her, I grew into a self-confident adult, with her I lived abroad and founded my own company. I have built a reputation and a life that I can be proud of. My life is no less important than the life of my husband - then why should a woman's surname go into oblivion? Of course, one cannot say that with the change of my surname all my achievements and life goals have lost their meaning - no, but I have the impression that my "track record" has been reset and now I need to start all over again with a new surname.

My husband didn't care if I changed my name or not

What I love about my husband is that he doesn't make problems out of small things. He never pressed me to change my last name, and he would not say a word to me if I decided to stay on my own. When I spoke to him on this topic, he suggested that he would take my name, as if in opposition to tradition. Therefore, changing the last name in order to honor a person who does not even consider it to be something special seems absolutely pointless.

I have only sisters (my own and cousins), and if we strictly followed this tradition, then our surname would cease to exist on my sister and me. Such rules - in VK you must indicate your real name and surname. And people do not change their full name often, therefore, in VK there is a restriction on how often this can be done.
