Built-in recovery options

By default, Word offers two possible ways to open a damaged document: Open and restore file or Open with Text Recovery Converter. In addition to these two options, there are other ways to fix the file using only Microsoft resources - all of which are detailed in the support instructions. Be sure to try to open the file with all the suggested methods before moving on to working with third-party tools - often standard tools are really enough.

In order to test additional file recovery methods, we purposely "corrupted" a Word document and then attempted to fix it using the various methods described below. We will talk about the results for each recovery option.

The standard recovery methods mentioned above can be implemented through the " Open file". Click " File", then " Open”, then click once on the file you want to recover. Do not try to open the desired file by simply double-clicking on it, otherwise Windows will try to open it "as usual", and you will again receive an error message.

Open file by link

The method is a little confusing, but it can be effective, again, everything will depend on the type of damage to the document. So we create a document, put text into it, copy that text, then paste the special text into the new document as a link, and finally update that link to point to the corrupted file instead of the original one. Phew! Let's start.

First, open a new Word document and type something like "Hello Word" and then save that document somewhere.

Now select the text you just typed and copy it to your clipboard. You can select it and click CTRL+C or just right click on it and select Copy.

Then create a new Word document, through the menu " File» – « New» . If you like, select an empty document. Now click on the little arrow on the Paste button and select " Special insert» .

So, if you are the victim of a system crash, a program error, or a sudden shutdown of your work machine, don't panic. Microsoft Word is smart enough that it automatically backs up the document you're working on. The time interval with which this happens depends on the autosave options set in the program.

In any case, for whatever reason, Word has not turned off for you, when you reopen it, the text editor will offer to restore the last backup copy of the document from a folder on the system drive.

1. Launch Microsoft Word.

Manually restoring a file backup via the autosave folder

As mentioned above, smart Microsoft Word automatically backs up documents after a certain period of time. The default is 10 minutes, but you can change this setting by reducing the interval to one minute.

In some cases, Word does not offer to restore a backup copy of an unsaved document when you reopen the program. The only solution in this situation is to find the folder where the document is backed up. See below for how to find this folder.

1. Open MS Word and go to menu "File".

2. Select a section "Options" and then item "Preservation".

3. Here you can view all autosave options, including not only the time interval for creating and updating a backup, but also the path to the folder where this copy is saved ( "Data directory for auto recovery")
