Why did the sound suddenly disappear on the laptop. Why is there no sound on the laptop. Search for the reasons for the loss of sound

If you have lost sound on your laptop, then there is no need to panic: in the vast majority of cases, the problem is solved by simply changing the system settings. You should only be afraid of damage to the speakers and sound card, but these malfunctions are eliminated quickly enough.

Volume check

Before proceeding with reinstalling the driver and other serious methods, check if the sound is turned on at all on the laptop. Sometimes users accidentally turn off their speakers and start panicking prematurely without checking basic things.

In this way, the problem is often solved when you hear system sounds, and, for example, in a browser or a separate application, silence meets you. The method works on all versions - from XP to Windows 8 and "tens".

You can adjust the volume with hotkeys. For example, on ASUS laptops, the combinations Fn + F10 (turn off), Fn + F11 (decrease) and Fn + F12 (add) are responsible for this function.

If there is no sound on a particular site, then check if the volume is turned on on it. All built-in audio and video players have their own control, don't forget about it.

No volume icon

If the sound icon has disappeared from the tray, then it can be returned through the properties of the taskbar:

Alternatively, click on the "Turn system icons on or off" link. Find the "Volume" item and set its status to "On".

If the icon still sometimes disappears (for example, after a reboot), then try fixing the problem with Microsoft Fix it 50229 (works on Vista and Windows 7). A small utility after launch creates a restore point, and then fixes errors with system icons. The same steps can be performed manually through the registry editor, but it is better to use automated tools so as not to accidentally disrupt the system.

Disabled Windows Audio Service

In some cases, the sound on the laptop does not work due to the fact that someone accidentally or intentionally turned off the Windows Audio service. To fix this flaw in the system:

  1. Press "Win + R".
  2. Write in the window "services.msc" and click "OK".
  3. Locate the Windows Audio service and make sure that it has the status "Running" ("Running") in the "Status" field. The startup type must be automatic.

If the settings are incorrect, double-click on the service. A window for making changes will open: select the automatic startup type and click "Start" (if the service is stopped).

On Windows 10 (on the "seven" and "eight" there is also such an opportunity), you can check the status of the service through the task manager. Call it with a combination of Ctrl + Shift + Esc or in any other way and go to the "Services" tab. Follow the steps above.

Driver failure

If the speaker volume is set to an acceptable level, the Windows Audio service is enabled, but the sound on the laptop still does not work, then you need to check the sound card drivers.

You can install the drivers manually after downloading them from the laptop manufacturer's website. It is important to download software for a specific laptop model to avoid compatibility issues. If the driver corruption is due to an incorrect update, then you need to run the rollback procedure.

Open the sound card properties and on the Driver tab, click Roll Back. After confirming the operation, the previous version of the software will be restored.

Sound card disabled

What to do if the sound on the laptop disappeared, and none of the methods described above helped? Run the BIOS and see if the sound card is enabled. In different versions and BIOS firmware, the path to the equipment is different, but the general order is something like this:

If next to an item with a name like "Onboard Sound", "Hight Definition Audio", etc. If the value is "Disabled", then the sound card is disabled. Change the value to "Enabled" to make the device work.

Other reasons

Concluding the review of the main reasons for the loss of sound on a laptop, let's consider several special cases:

  • Nothing is heard through the laptop speakers, but there is sound in the headphones. The cause of this phenomenon is most often a physical malfunction of the speakers. Try connecting external speakers.
  • For some users, the sound intermittently disappears (or there are extraneous noises). This problem usually occurs when the sound card is damaged or not working properly. Try connecting an external sound card.
  • If the sound disappears when playing certain audio and video formats, then it makes sense to update the list of codecs. Install the latest version of the K-Lite-Codec suite to fix this system flaw.

If you have tried everything and no longer know how to adjust the volume and where the sound has disappeared, then contact the service center - perhaps the problem is more serious than you originally thought.

When you start the operating system, did you lose the sound on your laptop, and instead of the usual melody, deathly silence hung? Let's see why the sound does not work on the computer.

How to restore sound

How do I get my PC to start playing audio again? To return the "voice" to our device, you first need to understand why the sound does not work on the laptop. There can be a lot of reasons, from software problems to hardware failures. Consider the most common ways to restore sound on a laptop.

Volume controls

The easiest way to turn on the sound on a laptop is to use the volume controls. In the lower right corner, right on the taskbar, there is an icon in the form of a speaker. Click on it. This will open the mixer, which is in the form of a slider. It is not difficult to guess that the higher it is, the louder the sound. For normal playback, it is enough that the slider is located at least in the middle.

If you have a disable icon in your mixer, then this indicates that the sound in your system is completely muted. To fix this, just click on this icon. After that, the soundtrack should return.

If the sound has disappeared in a particular program (for example, music is not played through the browser), then this can also be fixed. Just click on the RMB icon, after which a drop-down list will open. In it, select the item "Open volume mixer". A new window will appear with sliders for specific programs. To turn on the sound in some utility (the same browser), drag the slider at least to the middle.

Also, using this menu, you can mute some application. For example, you do not want to be distracted by sound banners on websites while surfing the Internet. What to do to make the sound disappear on a Windows 10 computer in a search engine? Just move the slider, which is located opposite the browser icon, to the very bottom.

Playback devices

The fact that there is no sound on the laptop may be the playback devices. Do not be afraid, because this does not mean that the speakers do not work. Perhaps the operating system simply does not see them. To fix this, right-click on the icon already familiar to us and select the item "Playback devices" in the list. A new dialogue will start. It has a list of devices that are designed to play information. We are interested in the item "Dynamics". We find it and make sure that there is a green check mark near the image of the columns.

If it is missing, then it becomes clear why the sound on your computer has disappeared. The playback device is simply out of sync with the PC. To fix this, right click on the speaker image. Select "Set as default" from the list that appears. If the speaker image is highlighted in gray, and the device itself has the “Disabled” status, then click on the icon and select the “Enable” item. After doing this, don't forget to set your device to default mode.

It is quite another matter if the speakers do not appear at all in the list of connected devices. If you encounter such a situation and do not know how to restore sound on your computer, just click on the free area of the window. This will open a drop down list. In it you need to find the option "Show disabled devices" and click on it. After that, the speakers will be displayed and you can connect them.

Checking the sound card

What to do if there is no sound on the computer even after carrying out all the above procedures? You need a sound chipset, because perhaps it is he who is the root of the problem. So, to make sure the chipset is working, do the following:

There are times when there is nothing in the Sound Devices section. If you are faced with a similar situation, then try looking for a sound chipset in "Other devices". If you find your audio device there, and an exclamation mark hangs near the device, then the drivers have come off the sound chipset. To restore the sound, you will have to reinstall them. We will talk about this in the next section.

Reinstalling drivers

The first thing to do is determine which drivers are needed for the audio adapter. In the Device Manager window, double-click on your sound card. After that, a new dialog will open in which you need to go to the "Details" section. There, near the inscription "Properties", click on the drop-down list and select "Hardware ID". After that, in the "Value" field, copy the first entry.

Open your browser and go to a site called devid.info. This Internet resource is a huge database of drivers for various devices. To find firewood for your sound card, paste the previously copied text into the search box. The website will automatically select the right firewood for you. All that remains for you is to find the latest program that fits your operating system. Having done this, download the selected driver.

If the driver you downloaded is in .exe format, then just run it and follow the instructions of the installer. If the firewood has a different format, you will have to resort to an alternative installation method. Go back to the "Task Manager" and look for the sound card there. Open its properties and go to the section called "Drivers". There will be an Update button. Click on it and then click on "Search". Then click on "Browse" and point the system utility to the path to the previously downloaded drivers. The installation process will begin. After installing the drivers everything should be back to normal.

Connectivity Check

If the problem with sound has not been resolved, then it is worth checking the connection of playback devices. If you are using a computer, then carefully inspect the system unit and make sure that the speaker wire is in the correct connector. As a rule, it has a green color. To be safe, pull out and insert the wire again.

If you are using a laptop, then make sure that the green connector is not occupied by any devices. For example, many put headphones there. If they are now in the green slot, then just pull them out. After that, sound playback will be carried out due to the built-in speakers of the laptop.

It will not be superfluous to check the periphery. Perhaps the reason that there is no sound on a Windows XP computer is bad hardware. Check your headphones and speakers for proper operation. To do this, connect the devices to another PC, laptop.

Windows Audio Service

Sometimes the reason that the sound disappeared on a Windows 7 computer can be a failure in system services. Therefore, if you experience problems with audio playback, make sure that no errors have occurred. For this:

Sound settings through BIOS

If you changed the settings in the system not so long ago, then it is possible that there is no sound on the Windows 7 computer due to BIOS settings. Most often, people inadvertently turn off the function that is responsible for broadcasting audio. To fix this, you first need to enter the BIOS. To do this, restart your computer and when it starts to turn on, hold down F2 on your keyboard.

This will open the BIOS menu. We are interested in the Advanced tab. We go there, after which we look for High Device Configuration. Opposite this characteristic should be the inscription Enabled. If Disabled is written there, we change this parameter, after which we fix the changes made by pressing F10.

System Restore

When the sound on the computer disappeared, and you know exactly when it happened, then in order to fix the problem, you can try to restore the OS. If the sound stopped working after being manipulated by the user or the program, then this should help. Most recent versions of Windows have a System Restore feature. That is what we will be using. So, to restore the OS, you need:

Viruses

Perhaps while downloading a movie or a new game, you caught some kind of virus. To fix this, pay attention to the operation of the system as a whole. There may be other signs that your PC has malware. Frequent freezes, slow computer performance, frequent antivirus warnings, advertising banners - all this points to viruses.

To overcome malicious software, you need to resort to the help of modern antiviruses. Scan your PC and remove all suspicious files. I would recommend Dr. Web. It carefully scans the system. At the same time, you can download the anti-virus program on your PC for free.

Reinstalling the operating system

If after all the steps taken on Windows 10 there is no sound, then you need to resort to heavy artillery. It is necessary to demolish the old system and. If you still decide to take this radical step, then do not forget to save all your important data on some kind of media or cloud service.

In addition, download all the drivers to a USB flash drive in advance. After all, after reinstalling Windows, you will have to install them again. When you install drivers, start with the sound chipset.

Conclusion

What to do if the sound on the laptop is gone? Use the above methods and, most likely, you will be able to solve the problem yourself. If nothing helped, and even after the complete demolition of the system, the sound did not appear, then there is only one way out - to carry the "sick" to the service center. Most likely, the problem lies in the hardware. Maybe your sound card or motherboard is broken. In any case, it will not be possible to cope with a hardware breakdown without narrow-profile knowledge and special tools. Therefore, you will have to entrust your computer to the master.

Frequently encountered queries in search engines, according to statistics, are questions related to the lack of sound, as can be seen in the screenshot from Google below.

Why is there no sound on the laptop?

This problem can occur on any laptop with any operating system, so below is an up-to-date list of actions for everyone that you need to follow sequentially. Perhaps, after one of them, the sound that was missing in the laptop will appear. The problem can be caused by two factors: software or hardware. Let's start with the simple and move on to the more complex.

1. Restart your laptop.

If the sound disappeared for the first time, restart the laptop. It will probably appear as soon as Windows starts loading.

2. Check speakers

If external speakers are used to play sound, check that they are plugged in, that all wires and plugs are connected, and that the volume control is not turned off.

3. Is the sound in Windows turned off?

Pay attention to the icon in the system tray (lower right corner of the screen). If there is a red crossed out circle next to the image of the white speaker, you need to increase the volume by lifting the slider up.

4. Check system settings

open Start - Control Panel - Sound and check all options. Here in the Control Panel you can open the menu of your audio codec IDT or Realtek, and see if their settings are correct.

5. Update drivers

open Start - Control Panel - Device Manager. In the list of devices, find the tab Sound, video and gaming devices. Right-click on your codec (IDT or Realtek HD) and in the context menu that opens, try to disable-enable the device, or update the drivers. You can also open the laptop manufacturer's website in a browser, find your model on it and download sound drivers for it.

The steps above will fix the problem in 99% of cases. The probability of a malfunction of the speakers themselves is very small, so if nothing works out for you, contact a more experienced friend or service center. You should not write requests in the comments to help return the sound on the laptop, it is useless, since it is impossible to do this remotely without seeing your laptop and the settings set in it. The problem often lies in the little things, such as an extra checkmark, an adjustment slider pulled in the wrong direction, or an uninstalled driver.

Hello.

I never thought that there could be so many problems with sound! It is undeniable, but it is a fact - a fairly large number of laptop users are faced with the fact that at one fine moment, the sound on their device disappears ...

This can happen for various reasons and, most often, the problem can be fixed on your own by digging into the Windows settings and drivers (thanks to which, you can save on computer services). In this article, I have collected some of the most common reasons why sound disappears on laptops (which even a novice PC user can check and fix!). So…

Reason #1: Volume setting in Windows

Of course, I understand that many can express dissatisfaction - " which is quite... for such an article. But still, many users do not know that the sound in Windows is regulated not only by the slider, which is located next to the clock (see Fig. 1).

Rice. 1. Windows 10: volume.

If you click on the sound icon (located next to the clock, see Fig. 1) with the right mouse button, several additional options will appear (see Fig. 2).

  1. volume mixer: it allows you to set your own volume in each application (for example, if you do not need sound in the browser, then you can turn it off there);
  2. playback devices: in this tab, you can choose through which speakers or speakers to play sound (and in general, this tab shows all the sound devices connected to the device. Moreover, sometimes even those that you don’t have! Can you imagine, sound can be sent to non-existent devices ...).

AT volume mixer notice if the sound is turned down to the minimum in your running application. It is recommended that all sliders be turned up, at least while troubleshooting audio issues (see Figure 3).

In the tab " Playback devices» note that you there may be multiple devices(I have only one device in Fig. 4) - and if the sound is "served" to the wrong device, this may be the reason for the loss of sound. I recommend that you check all the devices displayed in this tab!

Rice. 4. Tab "sound / playback".

By the way, sometimes the wizard built into Windows helps to figure out and find the causes of problems with sound. To launch it, just right-click on the sound icon in Windows (next to the clock) and launch the appropriate wizard (as in Figure 5).

Rice. 5. Troubleshoot audio

Reason number 2: drivers and their settings

One of the most common causes of problems with sound (and not only with it) is conflicting drivers (or lack thereof). To check their availability, I recommend opening device Manager: to do this, log in windows control panel, then switch the display to large icons and launch this dispatcher (see Fig. 6).

Next, open the " Sound, game and video devices". Pay attention to all the lines: there should not be any yellow exclamation marks and red crosses (which mean that there are problems with the drivers).

By the way, I also recommend checking the drivers in the Driver Booster utility (there are both free and paid versions, they differ in speed). The utility easily and quickly helps to check and find the necessary drivers (an example is shown in the screenshot below). What is convenient is that you do not need to search on various software sites yourself, the utility will compare the dates and find the driver you need, you just have to press the button and agree to install it.

Article about software for updating drivers: (including Driver Booster)

Reason number 3: the sound manager is not configured

In addition to the sound settings in Windows itself, there is (almost always) a sound manager in the system, which is installed along with the drivers ( in most cases it is Realtek High Definition Audio). And quite often, it is in it that non-optimal settings can be set that make the sound inaudible ...

How to find it?

It's very simple: go to windows control panel, and then go to the " Equipment and sound". Next, this tab should see the dispatcher that is installed on your hardware. For example, the laptop I'm currently setting up has the Dell Audio app installed. This is the software that needs to be opened (see Fig. 10).

Another important point: you need to check whether the laptop correctly detects the device connected to it. For example, you inserted headphones, but the laptop did not recognize them and does not work with them correctly. Result: no sound in the headphones!

To avoid this - when you connect the same headphones (for example), the laptop usually asks if it has identified them correctly. Your task is to point him to the correct sound device (which you have connected). Actually, this is what happens in Fig. 12.

Reason number 4: the sound card is disabled in the BIOS

In some laptops, you can disable the sound card in the BIOS settings. Thus, you are unlikely to hear sound from your mobile "friend". Sometimes BIOS settings can be “accidentally” changed by inept actions (for example, when installing Windows, inexperienced users often change not only what is needed ...).

Actions in order:

2. Since the settings in the BIOS differ depending on the manufacturer, it is rather difficult to give universal instructions. I recommend that you go to all the tabs and check all the items in which the word "Audio" is present. For example, Asus laptops have an Advanced tab, in which you need to switch the High Definition Audio line to Enabled (i.e., enabled) (see Fig. 13).

Rice. 13. Asus laptop - Bios settings.

Reason #5: Missing some audio and video codecs

Quite often, the problem is observed when trying to play a movie or audio recording. If there is no sound when opening video files or music (but there is sound in other applications) - the problem is 99.9% related to codecs!

  • first remove all old codecs from the system completely;
  • then restart the laptop;
  • reinstall one of the sets suggested below (you can find it at the link) in full advanced mode (thus, you will have all the most necessary codecs in your system).

Codec sets for Windows 7, 8, 10 -

For those who do not want to install new codecs in the system, there is another option - download and install a video player that already contains everything you need to play files of various types. Such players are becoming quite popular, especially in recent times (and no wonder who wants to suffer with codecs?!). A link to an article about such a player can be found below ...

Players that work without codecs -

Reason #6: Sound card problem

The last thing I wanted to dwell on in this article is the problems of a sound card (it can fail during sudden surges in electricity (for example, during lightning or welding)).

If this happens, then in my opinion, the best option is to use an external sound card. Such cards are now available at a price ( especially if you buy it in some Chinese store ... At least it's much cheaper than looking for "native") and are a compact device, slightly larger than a regular flash drive. One of such external sound cards is shown in fig. 14. By the way, such a card often provides much better sound than the built-in card in your laptop!

Rice. 14. External sound for a laptop.

PS

I am finishing the article on this. By the way, if you have sound, but it is quiet, I recommend using the tips from this article:. Successful work!

Lost sound on laptop what to do? - this question is often heard by repairmen of equipment. Almost every laptop user has encountered a similar problem.

If you figure out what is the cause of the malfunction, then you can try to solve it yourself without contacting the service center. So, let's try to figure it out.

If you are experiencing sound on your computer that has stopped playing, there are several explanations. There are malfunctions from the hardware category, but there are software ones.

Hardware indicates a malfunction of the sound card and speakers, damaged connectors, cables. In this case, the laptop must be taken to the workshop. The most common are software.

Software includes factors such as incorrect sound settings in the operating system, the player, the audio manager, or a driver that has been updated.

  • the volume mixer is turned off;
  • speaker failure;
  • failure in drivers;
  • malfunctions in the internal control system - “BIOS”;
  • disabling the Windows Audio service;
  • lack of audio codecs.

1 First, check the performance of the speakers if they are connected to a laptop. If they work properly on other devices, then it's all the same in the laptop itself.

2 Start automatic system update. This means creating a restore point when everything was still working. Such actions sometimes help if the system has problems with the operation of the software or individual components.

Let's consider in more detail all the ways to solve this problem.

Ways to solve the problem

Having found any malfunction or interference in the work, the first thing to do is to restart the computer.

If after that nothing has changed, then you need to look for the cause in another. But sometimes the reason is very simple and banal.

Perhaps the mute button on the laptop panel was pressed, or on the taskbar at the bottom of the screen on the right.

To get started, just check if all the indicators on the volume panel are turned on, that is, if the volume icon is crossed out in red.

Or the sound was set to the minimum value. Adjust the volume, and most importantly, check if the headphones are connected.

You could just forget about them and not notice that they are connected.

Often, laptop manufacturers provide devices with programs for various utilities; they can automatically change settings.

Find the key with the speaker pattern on the keyboard. As a rule, these are three buttons: increase, decrease and turn off the volume.

If there is no sound in a laptop with Windows 7 or XP software, in this case, try pressing these keys.

As a rule, you need to press the Fn key at the same time, but in some cases it does not need to be used. Make sure the speakers are turned on and the volume is set to normal.

A possible cause of sound problems in a laptop is interruptions in the work of drivers.

When starting to work with drivers, it is important to first determine what exactly is causing the breakdown in them.

If the driver does not work for the sound card or it is damaged, then of course the sound will not be played.

There are several reasons for this situation:

  • software failure;
  • infection of the computer with viruses;
  • failure during driver update;
  • mismatch between installed programs

It is necessary to find out the causes and find ways to eliminate the malfunction.

  • driver update programs;
  • through the menu;
  • download on the site;
  • from the installation disk;

First you need to try this scheme: open . On the Start panel - "Control Panel"- after . It will open a tab. “Sound Devices”.

It is worth trying several times to turn it on and off, or turn on driver updates.

One of the many reasons for losing sound on a laptop is turning off the integrated sound card in the BIOS.

BIOS is a collection of microprograms that make it possible to configure single devices of the system unit, as well as boot the operating system and other settings of significant parameters.

Literally, the BIOS can be described as the basic input-output system.

To check this, you need to go to the BIOS menu.

There are several options for logging in by pressing key combinations at boot:

  • CTRL+ALT+INS
  • CTRL+ALT+ESC
  • CTRL+ALT+ENTER

Therefore, immediately after the system boots, if you press for example Delete or F2, Setup appears and there will be a button next to it, here is the entry to the BIOS).

This button must be pressed at the moment when the system is booting.

When the BIOS is entered, you need to find the line "Advanced" and the word "Enabled" should be lit near the inscription "High Definition Audio".

If “Disabled” is on, then select what is needed using the arrows on the keyboard.

Restart your computer and check if there is sound.
