The brightness button does not work. Fix problems with adjusting the brightness of the laptop screen. Why is the brightness on the laptop not adjustable

Hello.

On laptops, a fairly common problem is the problem of screen brightness: it either does not adjust, then it changes on its own, then everything is too bright, then the colors are too weak. In general, directly "sore subject".

In this article, I will focus on one problem: the inability to adjust the brightness. Yes, it happens, I myself periodically encounter similar issues in my work. By the way, some neglect the monitor settings, but in vain: if the brightness is too low (or strong), the eyes begin to strain and get tired quickly.

So where do you start solving the problem?

1. Brightness control: several ways.

Many users, having tried one way to adjust the brightness, make an unambiguous conclusion - it cannot be adjusted, something has "flew" and needs to be repaired. Meanwhile, there are several ways to do this, besides once you set up the monitor - you can not touch it for quite a long time, and you will not even remember that one of the methods does not work for you ...

I propose to try several options, I will consider them below.

1) Function keys

On the keyboard of almost every modern laptop there are function buttons. Usually they are located on the F1, F2, etc. keys. To activate them, just press the button. FN+F3 for example (depending on which button you have the brightness icon on. On DELL laptops, these are usually the F11, F12 buttons).

function buttons: brightness adjustment.

If the screen brightness has not changed and nothing has appeared on the screen (no control) - go ahead ...

2) Taskbar (for Windows 8, 10)

In Windows 10, adjust the brightness very quickly if you click on the power icon in the taskbar, and then left-click on the rectangle with brightness: adjust its optimal value (see screenshot below).

3) Through the control panel

First you need to open the control panel at: Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Power Options

4) Through the video card driver

The easiest way to open the video card driver settings is to right-click on the desktop and select graphics characteristics from the context menu (in general, it all depends on the specific driver, sometimes you can go to its settings only through the Windows control panel).

In the color settings, there are usually always items for setting parameters: saturation, contrast, gamma, brightness, etc. Actually, we find the desired parameter and change it to fit our requirements.

2. Are function buttons included?

A very common reason why the function buttons (Fn + F3, Fn + F11, etc.) do not work on a laptop is the BIOS settings. It is possible that they are simply disabled in the BIOS.

The choice of the section where to enter the BIOS depends on your manufacturer. Here (within the framework of this article) to give a universal recipe is unrealistic. For example, in HP laptops - check the System Configuration section: see if the Action Keys Mode item is enabled there (if not, set it to Enabled mode).

action keys mode. HP laptop BIOS.

On DELL laptops, the function buttons are configured in the Advanced section: the item is called Function Key Behavior (two operating modes can be set: Function Key and Multimedia Key).

3. Lack of key drivers

It is possible that the function buttons (including those responsible for screen brightness) do not work due to lack of drivers.

Give generic driver name in this question (which you can download and everything will work)- it is forbidden (by the way, there are such on the network, I highly recommend not using it)! Depending on the brand (manufacturer) of your laptop, the driver will be called differently, for example: in Samsung it is "Control Center", in HP - "HP Quick Launch Buttons", in Toshiba - Hotkey utility, in ASUS - "ATK Hotkey" .

4. Incorrect video card drivers. Installing "old" working drivers

If everything worked as it should for you before, and after updating Windows (By the way, when updating, it is always, usually, a different video driver is installed)- everything started to work wrong (for example, the brightness adjustment slider runs across the screen, but the brightness does not change)- it makes sense to try to roll back the driver.

By the way, an important point: you must have old drivers with which everything worked well for you.

How to do it?

1) Go to the Windows Control Panel and find Device Manager there. You open it.

Update driver in device manager

Then select "Search for drivers on this computer".

By the way, it is possible that the old driver (especially if you just upgraded an older version of Windows rather than reinstalling it) already on your PC. To find out, click the button at the bottom of the page: "Select a driver from the list of already installed drivers" (see screenshot below).

Where to look for drivers. Catalog selection

Then just point to the old (different) driver and try using it. Very often, this solution helped me, because old drivers sometimes turn out to be better than new ones!

List of drivers

5. Windows OS update: 7 --->10.

By installing, say, Windwows 10 instead of Windows 7, you can get rid of problems with drivers for function buttons (especially if you can't find them). The fact is that the new Windows OS has built-in standard drivers for the operation of function keys.

For example, the screenshot below shows how you can adjust the brightness.

However, I should note that these "built-in" drivers may be less functional than your "native" ones ( for example, some unique features may not be available, for example, auto-adjustment of contrast depending on ambient lighting).

PS

If you have something to add on the topic of the article, thank you in advance for your comment on the article. Good luck!

Good afternoon!

The problem with setting the brightness on laptops is quite typical. And you should not close your eyes to it at all, because. our vision directly depends on this (if the screen is, for example, too bright -).

In this context, two problems are most often encountered:

  • brightness is adjusted automatically and spontaneously- sometimes darker, sometimes lighter, depending on the lighting in the place where the laptop is located (or on the contrast of the picture on the screen). How to solve this problem - described in this article:
  • brightness is not adjustable at all, it is always constant (even if you press special function keys).

In this article, I want to focus on the second development of events, and show what can be done. So...

Ways to adjust the brightness

For a start, in my opinion, it is worth trying different ways to adjust the brightness. Even if suddenly one of them does not work, this is not a reason not to try another. Finally, brightness control- this is a one-time procedure that does not need to be done so often, and if any of the options work, the problem can be considered solved ...

Option number 1

The easiest and fastest way to see what's up with the battery and brightness is to click on the "battery" icon in the tray. Then appear in the menu where you can add / subtract the current values (see screenshot below).

Option number 2

Most laptops have dedicated function keys (they should have a characteristic icon - ) - if you press them (for example, Fn + F5 as in the example below), then the brightness should change, and a slider will appear on the screen (which can be adjusted with the mouse ...).

Important!

If nothing happens when you press the function keys, I recommend using the recommendations from this article:

Option number 3

You can change the brightness, saturation, hues, colors, and other picture parameters in the video card driver settings. To enter them, in most cases, just right-click on an empty spot on the desktop, and select AMD settings (or IntelHD | nVidia) in the menu that appears.

For example, if you have an IntelHD video card (like mine), then simply select in the context menu that appears.

Then you need to open the section "Display/Color settings" . After that, you can fine-tune the quality of the image on the screen (see screenshot below).

Option number 4

Windows also has power options that allow you to set the brightness and how long your device will run, depending on whether it is plugged in or connected to a battery.

To open these settings, you must:

  1. press the key combination: Win+R
  2. enter command: powercfg.cpl
  3. press Enter

Option number 5

In Windows 10, you can customize the display through the Control Panel. To do this, open the menu: START/parameters/system/display.

Display (START - Settings - System - Display) // Windows 10

What to do if the brightness is not adjusted

1) Update the drivers for the video adapter // roll back the old ones

In most cases, it is not possible to change the brightness due to the fact that the system does not have up-to-date video card drivers. This can happen if, for example, after installing or updating the system, you did not download them from the official site (as a result, you still have the driver that Windows itself installed - it, of course, is working, but some options are not available!) .

Here you can do the following:

  1. go to the official website of your device, download the driver for the video adapter, and update it. For information on how to do this whole procedure, see this article:
  2. try to roll back the driver to the old one (which could remain in the system, for example, after updating it). I recommend trying this option first, and if there are no other versions in the system, then the first one, see the link a little higher.

How to try to roll back the system to the "old" working driver:

In the vast majority of cases, after updating the driver for the video adapter, you can easily change the brightness using the Windows control panel (for example, through the power settings), or through the control center of the driver itself, and even in cases where other methods do not work!

2) Check if function keys work

You can learn how to configure and enable them in another blog post of mine (link below).

What to do if the function keys (F1-F12, as well as Fn) do not work, you cannot change the brightness, volume, turn on / off the touchpad or Wi-Fi adapter:

3) Disable adaptive brightness control

Some laptops are equipped with special light sensors and by default they adjust the brightness of the screen depending on the level of lighting in the room. (called: adaptive brightness control). In most cases - this option does not provide the optimal level of image quality on the screen and it is recommended to turn it off.

To do this, open the Windows Control Panel at the following address: Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Power Options\Change scheme settings

Need to open additional settings your power plan.

In the tab "Screen/Enable adaptive brightness control"- there will be a treasured setting. Just set the modes to "Off". In some cases, you will need to restart the laptop.

By the way, I would like to draw your attention to the fact that some laptop models are equipped with additional settings centers (for example, Sony VAIO, Lenovo, etc.). They may have some options that affect the quality of the picture on the screen (example below). Just go to a similar settings center and turn off all the options that are related to brightness and adaptive sensors...

4) Try to change the OS (or install a second one for testing)

I’ll note right away that it’s highly advisable to go to the official website of your laptop manufacturer beforehand and see for which operating systems there are drivers.

As a help!

We check on the official website of the laptop manufacturer for which Windows operating systems there are drivers

Additions are welcome...

Hello dear friends! I am the proud owner of a laptop Lenovo Z500. I like a good laptop. But there is one problem with him: “The brightness disappears.” My daughter has a different modification and I have not heard of such a problem from her.

There was information on the Internet that such a “trouble” happens with tablets and phones of the brand. It's all the fault of the drivers installed on the equipment. I am not a big expert in this field, but I know 100% a way to solve the brightness problem on your gadget.

How does this happen? I had several cases when the screen brightness disappeared on a laptop Lenovo Z500. Once the battery was low, the screen was dim, and I decided to turn up the brightness. Outcome brightness disappeared. Another time I just decided to add brightness about "op" the screen is dark. On the Internet, there are still all sorts of cases of how this happens.

The result is one screen dims and the brightness ceases to be adjusted. No slider on the screen moves to show a brightness level of 100, but the screen doesn't get brighter. In general, the reaction to both the buttons and the cursor is the same “ No".

Tips on the Internet. Give different from stupid to workers. Stupid advice only wastes time. Workers help to solve the situation, but not always. This advice includes rebooting your laptop, tablet and other gadget, and while rebooting your product, keep the “Brightness” adjustment button pressed. Sometimes it helps.

Many say: “If Windows 10 is installed, then a reinstallation of everyone and everything is required.” What happens is because of the installation of Windows 10 and other nonsense. Don't listen to anyone. The first time this happened to me was when I was running Windows 8, or something, I don’t remember. Now 10 and everything works great.

Dimmed laptop screen lenovo z500. Having studied a large number of sites and forums, I show a way in which you will return the ability to adjust the brightness on your screen. Does not require software knowledge and takes a minimum of time and nerves.

Screen becomes dim, but you can distinguish what is on the screen.

    Open the "This PC" folder

Click on the “D” drive, the “drivers” folder opens

Click on the “drivers” folder, a bunch of folders will appear

Click on the folder called "VGA"

    Click on the "Intel" folder

Click on the folder “64” can be “32” bit OS

We click on the folder “9.17.10.2884” in my case, you may have a different number. It's just the version number of your driver.

    Click on the “Setup” folder

In the window that appears, click on “Yes”.

In the next click on "Yes" accept the license agreement

  • Again, click on “Next” and here it’s already about a miracle, when loading it appears
    screen brightness

To increase the battery life of your laptop, you can decrease the brightness of the display. But what to do if the screen brightness is not adjusted in the laptop? There are two ways to resolve this issue that is interfering with the normal use of the device.

Active Keys

Usually the problem occurs when trying to adjust the brightness using hot keys - for example, the Fn + F5 shortcut. In this case, you can configure the display settings for the image.

If you are using an HP or Lenovo laptop model, then the reason for the failure may be the Active Keys feature, which is enabled by default in the BIOS.

Thanks to this function, the keys from the F1-F12 row work without the Fn button. However, if the user does not know this, then he presses the Fn + F5 combination, and the brightness does not change. Therefore, the first tip is to try pressing the brightness adjustment key without combining it with the Fn button - just F5 and F6.

If it's hard for you to get used to this kind of hot keys, then just go to the BIOS and on the "System Configuration" tab, set the "Active Keys" parameter to "Disabled".

On Windows 10, you can adjust the brightness directly from the notification area. Just click on the battery icon to display, among other things, the brightness value of the display. In this case, no "hot" keys are needed. But if you still cannot do without keyboard control, then there is another way to fix the failure.

Driver installation

Hotkeys also have drivers, without which they cannot work correctly. You can download them on the official website of the laptop manufacturer, where the software for each model is located. The order is this:

If there are no drivers for the installed version of Windows for your laptop model, then try downloading the software for an earlier version. For example, if there are no drivers for Windows 10, install drivers for Windows 8.1. Another option is to find the right software from another laptop with similar specs. Laptops from the same model range may well fit.

On some laptop models, the brightness is adjusted automatically depending on the ambient light in the room. However, you can adjust this indicator manually, setting the brightness level of the display acceptable and safe for the eyes.

Using hotkeys

The laptop keyboard has an Fn button that, in combination with other keys, allows you to control certain Windows functions, including changing the brightness level of the display.

On ASUS laptops, the combination Fn + F5 and Fn + F6 works. On laptops from other manufacturers, increase/decrease brightness using the navigation arrows.

Windows Mobility Center

Another way to change the brightness is to use the Windows Mobility Center:

With the Mobility Center, you can adjust other important settings that affect battery life, and turn on a projector or external display.

Setting via power plan

If you are unhappy with the fact that the laptop itself changes the intensity of the display backlight depending on whether it is powered by the mains or the battery, then you can fix this situation through the "Control Panel":

A window for setting the current power scheme will appear on the screen. You can adjust the brightness for both battery and mains operation. After installing the new configuration, be sure to click Save Changes to apply the settings.

Why can the brightness parameter still not change?

If none of the above methods of changing the brightness level works, then try reinstalling (updating) the video card driver. Go to the manufacturer's official portal and on the "Service" page, find the software for your laptop.

When downloading the driver, make sure that you choose it correctly: the video card software must match the version and bitness of the system.

After updating the driver, the problem with the inability to change the brightness of the display should be fixed. If the problem persists, then most likely there is physical damage to the matrix or cable, which is corrected by replacing the failed part.
