Large Windows 8 language bar

The problem of the disappearance of the language bar icon in the Windows taskbar is not new and, it seems, despite the dissatisfaction of users, this bug will appear in all subsequent Windows versions... We have already covered, in this article we will show you how to get the missing language switch panel back in Windows 8.

What the problem looks like: in the Windows 8 taskbar, the language bar icon disappears between the system tray and the clock, as a result of which the user does not see which layout language is used and cannot switch it from the graphical menu (as a rule, the ability to switch the language layout from the keyboard is preserved).

Unfortunately, we were unable to reliably understand why such a bug occurs and how to prevent the disappearance of the language bar. Users complained about the appearance of a problem after installing updates or new software, "optimizing" the system special utilities or by hand, virus attacks, etc. In this article, we have put together three different techniques that should help you get the language bar icon back in Windows 8 (and Windows Server 2012).

Method 1. Enable the display of the language bar in the system settings.

First of all, check if the display of the language bar is enabled in the system settings. To do this, go to the following control panel item Control Panel-> Clock, Language Region-> Language... In the left pane, select Advanced settings(Extra options).

Then click on the link Change language bar hot keys, go to the tab Language Bar(Language bar) and make sure Language bar is not hidden in the settings. If not, check the option Docked in the taskbar(Pinned to the taskbar) and save your changes.

Method 2. Resetting the input language

The language bar is displayed only when the system uses more than one language as the input language. But sometimes, despite the fact that the system contains two input languages (Russian and English), the system for some reason does not perceive this fact. In this case, it is recommended to delete and re-add one of the input languages:

To do this, again go to Control Panel -> Clock, Language and Region -> Language, select the item with English layout and press the button Remove(delete).

Then I'll fight back the deleted layout, for which we press the button Add a language(Add language) and select from the list English(English - United States).

Check if the language bar icon appears, if not, go to the third method.

Method 3. Restoring the start of the ctfmon.exe process in the registry

For the appearance and display of the language bar in Windows 8 (as in previous versions Windows) process responds ctfmon.exe... By default, it should start at boot time. You can check whether this is so by opening the registry editor (regedit.exe) and expanding the branch HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Run(this thread contains a list of programs that the system should start at boot, details). Let's check if it contains a string parameter pointing to the ctfmon.exe file. If there is no such parameter, we will create it manually.

Let's create a parameter with an arbitrary name (let's say Language Bar) of type String with value "Ctfmon" = "CTFMON.EXE".

It remains to restart your computer and check if the language switching icon appears.

If this article helped you, please, in the comments to the article, indicate the probable reason for the disappearance of the language bar and the method that helped to return it.
