The packaging itself looks quite solid: inside the main box there is another, smaller one, in which, in fact, the camera itself is located.

Appearance and design nuances

As already mentioned above, the design of the device evokes extremely positive emotions! Everything looks exactly as it should when it comes to "smart" Xiaomi technology... IP-camera Xiaomi Small Square smart camera is enclosed in an elegant body, measuring 5.0x5.0x5.6 cm and weighs 100 grams.

At the same time, the lower part of the box acts as a folding stand with an adjustable leg and a rotating base (the structure can be rotated 180 degrees, which makes it possible to choose the most convenient position for you). There are two pairs of rubber pads to prevent unwanted slipping.

Worthy of a separate mention powerful magnet, built into the base of the leg and providing reliable fixation of the device on all types of surfaces, regardless of the angle of inclination.

On the back side, two connectors (USB and MicroUSB) were found, thanks to which the gadget can be connected both to portable devices (tablets, smartphones) and to a PC, and next to them - led indicator current camera status. The angle of view of the lens in this case is 110 degrees, which, together with the automatic correction of the horizon line, practically negates the possible bulge of the picture. Eightx zoom, albeit digital, works out as expected. The same can be said about the infrared sensor (“sees” at a distance of up to nine meters), which allows the device to function in almost complete darkness.

There are also smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and a warning system for exceeding the concentration of these harmful substances in the air. Wireless connections are provided by the Wi-Fi module.

In addition, the gadget is equipped with an integrated microphone, which allows the owner not only to observe what is happening in the room where the camera is installed, but also, if necessary, to hear. The built-in speakers complement the overall picture, the presence of which turns the camera into a full-fledged device for two-way communication.

The footage can be saved either on the manufacturer's "cloud" servers (Mi Cloud service), or on a memory card, which we, unfortunately, could not find in the delivery set.

Since the Small Square design simply does not include a battery, the camera must be permanently connected to a power source via a cable to operate. The list of devices that can be used in this capacity significantly expands the availability of USB and MicroUSB interfaces. According to the manufacturer's statements, a portable battery with a capacity of 10,000 mAh is sufficient for 12 hours of continuous operation.

The setup process is quite simple and should not cause any difficulties for most users: download current version proprietary application Mi Home, register account and add the camera to the list of devices, then just follow the instructions on the smartphone screen.

It is very, very difficult to make any claims to the image quality in this case - being a typical representative of budget devices, the gadget, nevertheless, manages to demonstrate a more than decent "picture".

I would also like to note the quite adequate operation of the system for recognizing faces and small objects. But what is really impressive is the implementation of the night mode - the light sensor monitors the level of natural light and, if there is a lack of it, activates the infrared sensor.

The only thing that can cause slight disappointment is the ability to shoot only one type of photo - on Full Screen... This means that even if you have zoomed in on an object and photographed it, the picture will still be full-screen, without taking into account the zoom.

If we talk about the sensitivity of the integrated microphone, then it is quite enough for clear speech recognition and its subsequent transmission to the smartphone (though there is a slight delay).

The camera is a completely budget gadget, with far from budget characteristics, which, coupled with the current design and excellent (for this money) "stuffing" makes it very, very profitable to purchase in all respects, especially if you are going to use it in a small office space or at home.

Equipment:

The micro-USB cable is flat and stylish. Its length is 180cm.

It should be noted that not all cables will fit this camera due to the fact that the port for connecting the cable is quite deeply recessed into the body.

The camera body is made of high-quality plastic, pleasant to the touch.

At the back there is a USB port (for connecting a second camera), a microUSB port for power (there is no battery in the camera, it works from an external power source) and an LED.

At the bottom there is a rotating platform with a magnet inside, which allows you to attach the camera to a metal surface and set it to the required position. Rubber inserts on the bottom prevent the camera from sliding on a horizontal surface.

In principle, the idea and implementation is good, but it is far from always possible to attach a camera to a metal surface (after all, not everyone installs cameras on a refrigerator), so it might be nice to implement universal sticky fasteners like in the Soocoo G1 camera (you can read the review).

Under the platform there is a slot for a microSD card and a button for setting / rebooting the camera, for pressing which a paper clip is intended (yes, in order to connect to the application after turning on the camera, you must use a paper clip every time).

All reviews describe the process of connecting the camera to the application, but there is no mention of the need to go through this process EVERY TIME after disconnecting the camera from the power supply.

The camera works only at 2.4 GHz, it does not work at 5 GHz.

On this moment there are significant shortcomings with the viewing of footage, such as rewinding the video (rewinds for 5 seconds and not always correctly), there is no possibility of accelerated viewing, and video viewing through the application is carried out without sound.
In addition, sometimes the application crashes (on Xiaomi Mi Max).

How it works
First of all, I note that telnet and RTSP can be configured, but for this you need to resort to shamanism again.
After installing the scripts, you can not only configure RTSP, but also set the correct time. initially, the video is in Chinese time. But at the same time, it becomes impossible to connect the camera to mobile application(MiHome), and for it to work, you must turn off RTPS support. That is, either one or the other.
In addition, some users received a brick on latest firmware trying to activate RTSP and stuff. I managed to connect the camera via RTSP to VLC on firmware 2.8.0.0, but I did not dare to do it with the latter.

As soon as the camera is connected to the phone, it starts recording 1 minute clips and saving them to the memory card.

You can turn on the motion detection function and set the sensitivity. When motion is detected, the camera issues a notification on the phone (in the latest firmware, a notification in Chinese) and makes a 15-second recording, which is saved NOT on the map, but in the cloud.
