The extension bmp jpg gif have. How to change the picture extension

Digital image formats are designed to store information in the form of pictures, graphics, photographs. They are used both by manufacturers of digital photo equipment and by programs for their display.

They are also very diverse and numerous, but among all the existing ones, it is worth highlighting the most recognizable and widespread, this is JPEG (.jpeg). Changing the file format of an image from one to another, reducing it in size, editing, improving the quality, all this is easily done using special tools from different graphic editors.

You can find out in what format a particular file with an image is saved by the symbols (extension), after the dot with the file name (.jpeg .tiff .bmp). Below is a list of the main graphic file formats, which will also be expanded with the advent of new types.

Digital image formats.

BMP(.bmp) is a simple format for storing information in the form bitmaps... It is the native format for operating system Windows, therefore, was born thanks to Microsoft. The bmp format does not use compression by default, which is evidenced by the not very small file size on the output. But if desired, it is possible to use it with RLE compression without loss of quality (simple data compression algorithm).

  • Color depth this format, it is possible to change in the range from 1 bit to 48 bits per pixel.
  • The maximum image resolution should not be higher than 65535 by 65535 pixels.
  • Supports up to 16.7 million different RGB colors.
  • Opened by most programs (Paint, Paint Net, Gimp).

Jpeg(.jpeg) - the format is the most common for a graphic image, the compression algorithm allows you to reduce the file size as much as possible without any visible loss of quality, but with each new resave, the quality is lost. The size of such a file is small.

JPEG 2000(.jp2) - a format created to replace the usual jpeg with the new JPEG 2000, which gives the advantage of a smaller size of the same digital image (30% less). Even with strong compression of JPEG 2000 squares in the image are not, as is inherent in the JPEG format.

GIF(.gif) - the format is ideal for graphic drawings, graphs, diagrams, also supports transparency and animation. It can store data compressed without loss of quality in color up to 256 colors.

PNG image(.png) - a format that has been significantly improved, and should replace the GIF format, unlike its predecessor, it has support for the alpha channel, which allows you to store an unlimited number of colors.

RAW(.raw) - the format contains raw graphic information, a kind of matrix imprint from a digital camera without processing the processor of the camera itself. The format provides the broadest possibilities for processing photo content while maintaining the maximum image quality. The file size is average.

Tiff(.tiff and .tif) - a format that allows you to store photo content with different color profiles RGB, CMYK, and does not lose image quality after multiple resave. It has the ability to transfer different color depths of 8, 16, 32 and 64 bits, it is mainly used for printing printing. The size of such a file is large.

The photo extension is the file extension in which the photo was saved. In turn, the file extension denotes the type of saved data and indicates the file format.

The bitmap is made up of pixels, and how these pixels are stored in the file and how the file itself is arranged and "speaks" about the file format.

The extension is given after the file name, after a period, and most often consists of 3 characters (for example: photo.jpg).

The choice of the file type and format (i.e. its extension), in which the photographer should save the image, directly depends on the resolution of the photo.

Namely, the quality of the resulting image depends on such characteristics as resolution. Image quality is determined by the number of pixels: the more such dots, the higher the level of detail in the photo.

Not all existing file formats are capable of saving good expansion Photo. Therefore, you should be very careful about choosing a format.

Most common photo file formats

For digital photographs, the most popular formats are considered to be TIFF, JPEG, RAW, PNG, GIF. Modern cameras are capable of taking photographs in any of the listed formats. Therefore, photographers themselves often argue among themselves in which of these formats the pictures are saved more successfully.

The choice of the format determines not only the quality of the photo itself, but also the file size (i.e. its weight) in which the image is saved. The size depends on how quickly the photo will load on the screen or how quickly it will be downloaded to another medium (for example, from a memory card of a camera to HDD computer).

But according to statistics, it can be argued that the most common is still JPEG format since it allows you to save high quality Photo. If desired, weight Jpeg images can be reduced in graphic editors, such as PhotoShop, without greatly spoiling the quality of the picture.

So, let's take a look at the main features of popular photo formats.

RAW format

  • in fact, it is an analogue of a film negative (unlike other formats, which are a digital analogue of a slide),
  • intended for further processing and saving either in a convertible form or in another format depending on the goals of the photographer (for example, if you need printing, then in TIFF or JPEG; if - use for the web, then in PNG and GIF),
  • provides best quality snapshot,
  • is large and requires sufficient space on the memory card,
  • stores all the original information about the photo.

TIFF format

  • completely preserves the high quality of the photo,
  • great for printing,
  • saves data and information about the image,
  • photos in this format have a very big size(weight), which prevents them from being posted on the Internet.

JPEG format

  • the most popular format,
  • can be read and opened by any graphics program,
  • allows you to save a photo in high quality,
  • suitable for printing,
  • suitable for placing on the network, since the size can always be reduced in a graphics editor,
  • has a disadvantage - loss (with frequent opening and closing, part of the data is lost).

PNG format

  • like JPEG, it allows you to preserve the quality of the image while reducing its weight / size,
  • allows you to make elements semi-transparent (using a graphical editor),
  • convenient for using on the Internet,
  • suitable for creating web designs, as you can control its size and transparency.

GIF format

  • allows you to combine graphics with animation,
  • has a light weight,
  • suitable for uploading to the Internet and for creating web designs,
  • image quality "suffers" due to weight loss,
  • not suitable for printing,
  • has a limitation in the color palette.

Thus, the photographer can choose which format to use in certain situations and depending on the work tasks in front of him. Therefore, if you need to make colorful prints, then it is better to use a convertible RAW or JPEG, if you want to use a picture in your website design, then refer to PNG and GIF.

It is also popular to use the PSD format (PhotoShop format) to store a photo on a computer for further processing.

Based on the foregoing, we can conclude that the expansion of the photo should be given no less time than other parameters of the image.

image type or size?

I have several articles on my site on how to work with pictures:

Where can I get pictures for website design? How to resize a picture.

How to compress a photo or picture. How to optimize an image for a website.

The search engine somehow intricately connected it all, and people began to get to my site on the request “ How to change the extension of a picture or photo? ". Therefore, as a decent person, I decided to answer this question.

1. Extension, or type of image.

What is picture extension? Exaggerated is what is in the name of any file after the period. Schematically, the name of any file looks like this: NAME . extension

The extension defines the type or format of the file. Pictures also happen different types... There are already quite a few of them today, I will not list them. Sometimes it is necessary to change this type or extension of the picture, because some programs can only handle a certain format. Well, or for some other reason.

It is very simple to do this: open the picture in a graphics editor and select the "Save As" menu item. Then you can change the name of the image, if required, and select the desired format (type) of the image from the drop-down list (change the image extension).

This is a universal tip for any graphics editor.

The easiest way to accomplish this is in the inline Windows editor Paint.

Path to open the editor: Start - Programs - Accessories - Paint

Open the picture, select the "Save As" menu item, then select the desired type (extension) and save, having previously looked at which folder the picture will be saved to, so that it is easier to find it.

A similar operation can be performed in another graphics editor, for example, in Photoshop.

I usually use pictures with jpg extension

Images of this type are easily compressed and take up little space (in KB).

But sometimes you need pictures with transparent background so that only a silhouette without a background can be placed on the site. In this case, you need to choose the type of drawing png

Most modern graphic editors work with all known types of drawings (picture extensions), so no problems arise.

But just in case, you are now armed with the knowledge how to change the picture extension or photos.

P.S. You can do it right now (online). Change the extension of a picture or photo online using the service Online Photoshop.
Upload the image, click "Save" (this is how it works for this service) and choose the extension.

2. Expansion or resolution, or image size.

Sometimes the word extension is confused with the word permission. Some people mean by extension image size or density in pixels (screen resolution)... For example, how to get a picture with a resolution of 480 * 480?

The photo extension is the file extension in which the photo was saved. In turn, the file extension denotes the type of saved data and indicates the file format.

The bitmap is made up of pixels, and how these pixels are stored in the file and how the file itself is arranged and "speaks" about the file format.

Namely, the quality of the resulting image depends on such characteristics as resolution. Image quality is determined by the number of pixels: the more such dots, the higher the level of detail in the photo.

Not all existing file formats are capable of maintaining a good photo extension. Therefore, you should be very careful about choosing a format.
