Review Samsung Galaxy J1 mini SM-J105H (2016)

The South Korean giant has focused all attention on mid-budget and top models of mobile phones. It is understandable, because this industry is the most interesting for the consumer. But what if people don't want to buy expensive smartphones, preferring a compact, cheap solution purely for calls and mail? For this case, Galaxy J1 mini 2016 is provided, one of the few representatives of ultra-budget phones with a 4" screen from a well-known brand. It is ideal as a first Android gadget or an office dialer.

MAIN FEATURES OF THE SMARTPHONE

Everything is packed in a simple white cardboard box. Inside lies a smartphone in a shipping film, a warranty card with stickers, a 0.7A single-piece charger and a 1500 mAh battery. By "solid" is meant the solidity of the adapter. You will not be able to remove the USB cable - this is not provided initially.

Design

The baby is available immediately in 3 colors: white (white), gold (gold) and black (black). The latter option is in particular demand among the target audience. The dimensions of the device are really miniature - 121.6x63.1x10.8 mm, which seems just tiny compared to competitors. But the weight is purely smartphone - 123 grams. Small, plump, grippy and well built.

All controls are traditionally scattered on the left (volume) and right (power) faces. Above we have a headphone jack, below - microUSB for charging. The back cover is removable. Underneath is a battery, 2 SIM slots and a microSD slot up to 128 GB.

In general, belonging to Samsung is visible to the naked eye. Typical body shape and location of the main speaker, traditional mechanical home button and touch keys on the bottom panel. "Duos" nameplate next to the logo. It seems to be a battered appearance, but instantly sinks into memory.

Display

The screen in the Samsung Galaxy J1 mini is not the most outstanding. Although many are already spoiled with chic IPS and Super AMOLED matrices, total calibration of everything and everything, wild viewing angles and other moments. But this is already the prerogative of the high price segment. Here we also have a 4-inch TFT-screen with a resolution of 800x480. Not the brightest in the sun, but readability is good.

The responsiveness of the display is excellent. Many people will be upset because of the support for only two simultaneous touches, but first try placing all five fingers on the panel so that they move freely around the touchscreen.

Another thing is that the screen is not covered with tempered glass, so you should take care of it in advance to protect it from scratches. For these purposes, the familiar film is perfect for everyone.

autonomy

The 1500 mAh battery is capable of providing up to 7 hours of network operation (Wi-Fi/3G), up to 8 hours of continuous talk time or 30 hours of player mode. It remains only to find that poor fellow who will be forced to talk non-stop with an interlocutor for 8 hours, but there are all sorts of cases. Hearing is excellent.

In real conditions, the Galaxy J1 mini can withstand a day of maximum download or up to three days in dialer and email client mode. Display resolution, not the most hasty and "gluttonous" processor, resolution and type of matrix affect. And if you activate the maximum energy saving, you can win up to four days at all.

Performance

The main propulsion mechanism of this smartphone is the Spreadtrum SC8830 processor, which has 4 cores at 1.2 GHz. In fact, a 2-core would have coped with such a screen resolution, but why not. But the magic happens with the RAM. Apparently Samsung is pleased to put 768 MB of memory, although it would be much more humane to see 1 GB or 512 MB. By the way, J1 mini 2016 is not the only device with such a surprise.

The performance is budget but sufficient. The interface does not set speed records, however, no brakes, freezes and other incorrect moments were noticed.

The amount of built-in storage is only 8 GB, while the OS with applications “eats off” almost half, and a little more than four are available to the user. Although there is an expansion slot for microSD up to 128 GB inclusive. Another thing is that no one will put such a capacity in a budget device. But still nice.

Let's say right away that the phone is definitely not for games (if only for casual ones). But for good old calls and trips in the glove compartment of a car (as a spare player) - a great option.

The device runs Android 5.1.1 out of the box. We must pay tribute to the company, because many analogues from the Celestial Empire are still content with only version 4.4.2, or even 4.2. Lollipop wins great in terms of functionality, energy savings, features and appearance. Although the Galaxy J1 mini has TouchWiz installed, so many stock Android features are simply not visible in their original form.

A nice addition is the FM radio, which works when a headset is connected. Otherwise, a complete office suite, including a voice recorder, calculator, notes and a gallery with a media player.

Camera

The main module flaunts a 5 megapixel matrix, but is completely devoid of flash and autofocus. This fact is somewhat disappointing, but in daylight and a minimum of patience, you can count on good pictures. Matrices in Samsung have always been worthy even in ultra-budgetary ones. Chinese fakes without exception remain out of work.

The front camera is modest - with VGA resolution. For Skype conversations, it will do, and nothing more is required of it.

Conclusion

Samsung has done a great job in the more expensive segments, but has not forgotten about the ultra-budget. The Galaxy J1 mini 2016 is a living example of this. Yes, it lacks stars in terms of performance and shooting ability, but what kind of records can we talk about for such money.

The Chinese market can offer a device with a diagonal of 4.5-5 inches for a similar price, but it will be a terribly slow device without a hint of a brand, intelligible firmware and a correctly working interface. Moreover, many are purposefully looking for a diagonal of 4 ".

And let's not forget about the excellent autonomy, which will be in the hands of people for whom a phone is just a phone. Loud, unpretentious, with two SIM. This is what a budget should be.

What if you need a simple phone? And so that not with buttons, but a smartphone and so that people would not be ashamed to go out with it? It is logical to start with the offers of operators, the "big three" usually offer budget options. And you can also choose a suitable smartphone among entry-level models. For Samsung, this is the recently introduced Galaxy J1 mini. Let's find out what is good about the budget Korean novelty.

Equipment

The smartphone is in a small white box, in addition to the device itself, there is also a charger. Everything, nothing else, no headphones, no cable.

smallest galaxy

Budget Samsung is deprived of the attributes of expensive models, no glass or metal, only plastic. But the plastic is of good quality, there is no feeling that you are holding a primitive phone in your hand. When you buy a budget means of communication, this is an important point.

The case is black in front and behind, and the central part is made of dark gray glossy plastic. The sides were made slightly flattened, so the Galaxy J1 mini resembles other Samsung models. The case comes in three colors: in addition to black, they offer white or golden.

A slightly protruding frame runs along the perimeter. The phone rests on it when you place it face down to avoid scratching the display cover. Usually Samsung makes the bezel sparkling and shiny, but here it is matte and does not draw attention to itself.

I think everyone has held a Samsung smartphone at least once in their lives, so the layout of the buttons will seem painfully familiar. Volume control on the left, power button on the right, and a block of three keys below the screen. The wide central physical button works with a clear click, pressing is error-free. The key on the left launches the menu of running applications, and the right key takes you back a step. The buttons do not have backlighting, which is not very pleasant, but you can get used to it over time.

At the back there is only a speaker hole and a camera lens, and what more could you want, Samsung's cheapest smartphone is designed succinctly.

Aim more accurately

The case cannot be called thin, the thickness here is more than a centimeter. But the phone itself is compact, so it is easy and convenient to operate with one hand. Although it is heavy for a baby - 120 g. The small smartphone fits easily in pockets, it does not stick out or bulge out of clothes.

But after large diagonals, typing on a 4-inch screen is no longer very convenient, fingers often miss the characters on the keyboard. I solved the problem using Swype-style predictive input. In addition, you can type more accurately, sacrificing speed for the sake of grammar.

Only 4 inches

Screen size - 4 inches, resolution 480 x 800 pixels. For 2016, these are modest numbers, but the first Samsung i9000 Galaxy S had just such a screen back in 2010. After this nostalgic pause, let's evaluate the quality of the screen, since they are most often saved on budget devices.

Here is a TFT-TN panel, so the viewing angles are far from the maximum. If you turn the phone in your hand to the left or right, the picture on the screen dims or brightens, but there is no vertical distortion. On sunny days, you have to turn the brightness to the maximum, otherwise you won’t see anything on the screen.

There is no light sensor in the smartphone, the brightness must be adjusted manually. Such a limitation is often found in the most affordable smartphones from major manufacturers, although inexpensive Chinese brands do not skimp on this.

slow gas

The filling is quite modest: a 4-core Spreadtrum SC7731 processor, Mali-400 graphics, 768 MB of RAM and 8 GB of internal memory, of which 4.7 GB are free. AnTuTu gives out a little more than 20 thousand “parrots”. Yes, this is not much, but at least the menu does not work at the speed of a turtle.

Although there are delays: you switch between applications and see a blank screen for a moment, and not the desired program. I used the phone without pain and suffering, as is sometimes the case with budget devices. Galaxy J1 mini, according to Samsung, sees a microSD card up to 128 GB, but hardly anyone will put such a volume here, the card costs as much as the phone itself.

A shell of Nature UX, also known as TouchWiz, although this is already an obsolete name. The model uses Android 5.1, which appeared about a year ago. Don't count on 6.0 Marshmallow. In the settings we change the font size, you can also choose the character style. Of course, we set the background image, arrange the icons on the desktops, add widgets.

Just a camera

The 5 megapixel camera is quite simple, there is no autofocus, no flash. Because of this, we lost the "flashlight" function. Pro mode with manual settings looks like a mockery: what to configure? But you can quickly launch the camera by double-clicking on the physical button below the screen, just like in the older Galaxy. Examples of photos below, due to limited capabilities, it is difficult to shoot texts or small objects here. In general, a typical camera "for show".

The front camera is 0.3 megapixels, you can recognize facial features in the pictures, nothing more is required of it. Video quality is limited to 1280 x 720 pixels.

Dual SIM, but no LTE

The Galaxy J1 mini has a couple of microSIM slots, 3G works, reception is normal. Alas, there is no LTE, it is better not to use a smartphone as a modem for a laptop, because with 4G the Internet works much faster. There is also GPS for navigation, Bluetooth keeps a stable connection with the Bose SoundLink On-Ear headset.

Charge in a day

Battery capacity 1500 mAh, replaceable battery. Charging is enough for 1.5-2 days of work with checking mail, occasional use of the browser and applications for social networks. The operating time indicators are good, but there is a simple stuffing, you don’t expect other figures. The smartphone has an energy-saving profile when we limit the number of running applications.

Results

Samsung Galaxy J1 mini is the cheapest smartphone from the Korean company. It costs 5,490 rubles, like two covers for. He is capable of simple games, he cannot be called slow or scary in appearance. A simple smartphone from a well-known brand, and the brand name often plays a decisive role when buying.

Of the budget alternatives, I will mention that it costs 5,390 rubles. Another option is Alcatel One Touch Pop 3 for 5,990 rubles.

Positioning

Samsung almost completely abandoned the budget segment. By releasing the J range, they partially offset the lack of such devices. But in terms of price / quality ratio, these models are far from ideal, rather they are intended for those consumers who do not understand the market and at the same time want to buy a device from a major manufacturer. The payment for the brand in this case is excessive, since similar solutions from other companies cost at least 1.5-2 times less, and operator models look even more attractive. If the regular J1 uses a SuperAMOLED screen, which can be at least some kind of distinctive feature, but is leveled by an even higher price, then the J1 Mini does not have anything like that. This is a very, if not very, very, budget solution in terms of its filling and a very expensive solution based on the price. However, let's take a closer look at it.

Design, dimensions, controls

The model is available in three colors - white, black and gold. Oddly enough, buyers often choose the gold color, apparently due to its perception by the target audience.

The dimensions of the phone are 121.6x63.1x10.8 mm, and the weight is 123 grams. It is small, but a bit thick, which looks unusual against the background of other models, especially since there is a small battery by modern standards. In the hand, the model lies well, the build quality is excellent. These are perhaps the few advantages of this device.

On the right side there is an on/off button, on the left side there is a paired volume rocker. On the top end there is a 3.5 mm headphone jack, on the bottom end there is a microUSB connector.

The back cover can be removed, inside is a removable battery, two slots for microSIM cards, and memory cards.

Display

Display 4 inches, 480x800 pixels, TFT, no automatic brightness control. The screen is not very bright, it is hard to see in the sun due to its size. This is a very budget solution, which, moreover, loses both to analogues in its price group and to cheaper solutions. We can say that such screens are already perceived as obsolete.

Battery

Battery Li-Ion 1500 mAh, it provides, according to the manufacturer, up to 7 hours of work on the Internet (3G or Wi-Fi), up to 8 hours of talk time, up to 29 hours of music playback. In real conditions, the device works a day at a very heavy load, ordinary consumers will get about two full days. This is a good result, which was made possible thanks to both the screen and the not very hasty processor.

The device has a maximum energy saving mode, everything is turned off in it, except for the main functions, the operating time increases. Considering that the screen is a regular TFT, this does not give any huge increase in operating time compared to a similar function in the company's flagships.

Processor, memory, performance

The device has 768 MB of RAM, which is very little, most budget solutions have 1 GB of memory. The Spreadtrum SC8830 chipset, four cores up to 1.2 GHz, is an ultra-budget and very cheap solution. Result? Not a single synthetic test that has 3D tests can be passed to the end on this device - they just crash. The performance is low, noticeably lower than most budget devices.

In practice, this means that the interface is slow, jerky and not very pleasing to the eye. This is found in very inexpensive models of last year, in modern state employees, the interface works much faster.

You can put memory cards up to 128 GB, but who will do it in such an inexpensive device? The main thing is that the built-in memory is 8 GB, of which a little more than 4 GB is available for your needs.

Communication options

The usual and familiar set, there is synchronization with a PC (USB 2.0, KIES), Wi-Fi 802.11 b / g / n, BT 4.0, there is no NFC, but there is support for GPS / Glonass. The positioning speed is low not because of the quality of the antenna, but rather because of the general brakes of the device.

Camera

Front camera VGA! What can I say? Nothing. The main camera has a resolution of 5 megapixels, but it does not have autofocus, which makes most of the photos blurry, it is good for shooting landscapes. You can see examples of photos and videos below.

Photo examples

- a smartphone from a Korean manufacturer, which is designed to occupy the niche of entry-level devices. It has good functionality, recognizable design and a popular brand. An excellent choice for those who want to get a real "smart phone", but at the same time not overpay.

The diagonal of the display is 4 inches and allows the smartphone to easily fit into a pocket of almost any size. In addition, it is perfectly controlled with one hand, even by children. But for all the compactness on the screen Samsung Galaxy J1 mini (2016) J105 Black, with a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels, you can watch YouTube videos, view photos or web pages. Confident performance, in everyday affairs, provides 4-core processor Spreadtrum R3533S, with a frequency of 1.2 GHz. The presence of the current version of Android 5.1 Lollipop favorably distinguishes the smartphone from its competitors, many of which have 4.4 KitKat or lower installed. 768 MB of RAM is responsible for smooth operation. The shell of the system is a proprietary interface Samsung TouchWiz. To store photos, videos, applications and games, 4.4 GB is available (out of a total of 8 GB). If this is not enough, you can install a microSD memory card with a maximum available capacity of 128 GB.

Samsung Galaxy J1 mini (2016) J105 Black equipped with two cameras. The main one has a resolution of 5 megapixels and is capable of shooting HD video, with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels. For video calls in Skype or Viber, the front camera is useful. Fast internet connection, provides Wi-Fi working with b/g/n standards. Wireless headphones or headsets, connected via Bluetooth version 4.0. It, like Wi-Fi Direct, will help you transfer files to another mobile device or computer. Support for installing two SIM cards will expand the possibilities when choosing tariffs for mobile Internet and calls. This will also allow you to combine both personal and business phone numbers in one device. When operating in navigator mode, the smartphone receives signals from GPS and GLONASS satellites. Removable battery with a capacity of 1500 mAh, can withstand up to 8 hours of talk time, up to 29 hours when listening to music, and up to 9 hours of Internet surfing (using Wi-Fi), without recharging.

In 2016, Samsung launched one of the smallest devices on the smartphone market: the 4-inch Samsung Galaxy J1 mini. In addition, J1 mini is the cheapest smartphone from the manufacturer, the price at the time of writing is about 80 USD.

Specifications Samsung Galaxy J1 mini SM-J105H

The technical part of the smartphone is very modest by the standards of 2016.

Design

The appearance of the device is very simple, without frills. With a high probability, it can be argued that earlier budget models were taken as the basis for the design. Available in 3 color variations: black, white, gold. The product is made of matte plastic, the frame is made of metal, which is very pleasing and distinguishes the J 2016 series from last year. We had a golden color and the plastic had a pearly sheen. The design is collapsible, the battery can also be removed. The case is 121.6mm high, 63.1mm wide and 10.8mm thick. Such a “well-fed” device, but thanks to this, it lies more confidently in the hand, given the small width and height.

CPU

The device is equipped with a 4-core processor Spreadtrum SC8830 (1.2 GHz). The graphics are processed by the Mali-400 MP2 video chip. The solution is budgetary, but for work, in general, it is enough. There are no noticeable problems with the speed of work in the interface, as well as delays in the work of applications.

You can run demanding 3D games on a smartphone, but it is not suitable as an affordable gaming solution due to the small screen. Demanding games like Asphalt 8 and Modern Combat 5, surprisingly, run smoothly, but at the lowest graphics settings. Pixels are visible even on a small screen in games, smooth lines have turned into a ladder.

Memory

The amount of internal memory is 8 GB, of which a little less than 4 GB is available to the user. To install ordinary applications of this volume is enough. Interestingly, you can install a MicroSD up to 128 GB in the memory card slot: as a rule, this has not yet been found in state employees. Thanks to this feature, the Samsung Galaxy J1 mini is an excellent candidate for replacing an MP3 player and voice recorder. After all, this volume is more than enough to store a solid collection of music tracks.

But with the RAM, not everything is so fun. Its volume is only 768 MB, while the generally accepted standard in modern budget devices is 1 GB of RAM.

Battery

The battery in this smartphone is modest: only 1500 mAh. But given the specifics of such devices, they are usually not used for games, watching movies and surfing the net. Therefore, energy consumption is more sparing. The classic scenario for using such a smartphone is calls, SMS, occasionally social networks, listening to music from time to time, a calculator and an alarm clock as needed. In this mode, he will calmly last one day, perhaps up to two days. It all depends on the intensity of use.

Also, the situation is partially saved by the “Maximum Energy Saving Mode”. When activated, it automatically dims the backlight of the screen, optimizes running applications, and restricts their access to the network in sleep mode.

Camera

The smartphone has 2 cameras, but here they are, most likely, for show. The main one completely lacks such basic features as autofocus and flash. As for its level in daylight, it shoots tolerably, but without autofocus it is very difficult to get a more or less clear picture of text. The camera has settings, and they are most likely for show. By selecting the "Sports" mode, the following picture was obtained on the main camera:

Click on image for full size

And below is a shot without the "Sports" mode. There is no particular difference.

Well, the picture on the main camera is close, with sufficient lighting:

The maximum video recording resolution is HD (1280 x 720), recorded at 30 fps.

The 0.3 megapixel front camera is even worse, but it will do for video calls.

Take a photo on the front camera:

Display

The display diagonal is only 4 inches. Recently, this is a rarity, and buyers may and would like to purchase a modern compact device for calls and work, but the choice is small. With a modest diagonal, the resolution is 480 x 800 pixels, but this device does not need more. The pixel density is 240 ppi, which is very low. You can see individual pixels. if you look closely.

The display itself is the most budgetary and is made using TFT technology. The viewing angles are small, so if you look not at a right angle, but at least slightly tilted to the side, the colors will darken a lot.

The brightness margin is enough for comfortable use indoors, as well as in places where direct sunlight does not fall.

Network communications

The smartphone is dual-SIM, both slots are designed for Micro-SIM cards. One SIM can work in 2G networks, the second - in 3G. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth modules are present, the device can be used as a pocket portable hotspot. Navigation is supported by GPS and GLONASS.

The manufacturer saved on the proximity sensor, but there is a software solution that blocks the screen when you call (the screen remains on when you call). To unlock the screen during a call, you need to tap on it twice. You can accidentally, with your ear or cheek, unlock and open the notification curtain, turn on Bluetooth or other functions. This is in theory and according to reviews on the network, in practice it was not possible to unlock the screen with the ear.

Sound

The hole for the main audio speaker is located on the rear panel near the camera. The maximum volume reserve is enough to hear the call in a not particularly noisy place. There are no complaints about the quality and volume of the sound of the conversational speaker.

Operating system

The OS is Android 5.1 Lollipop. The system is not overloaded with unnecessary elements, the shell is quite simple, so it does not slow down. An upgrade to Android 6 is not planned, but Android version 5.1 is enough for this device, and even earlier versions of OS would be enough.

Pros and cons of Samsung Galaxy J1 mini

Pros:

  • compact size due to small display;
  • support for flash drives up to 128 GB;

Minuses:

  • poor screen quality;
  • the camera is devoid of flash and autofocus;

Our review of the Samsung Galaxy J1 mini SM-J105H

The smartphone may be of interest to those who do not need a camera, high performance and at the same time the need for telephone conversations without using a headset. Considering the cost, the Samsung Galaxy J1 mini absolutely cannot compete with other devices in the lowest price segment with the same specifications. Yes, it is cheaper than all other smartphones from this manufacturer, but more expensive than its competitors. So Samsung, in this device, hopes for the brand and so far for the lack of a large number of fresh compact smartphones on the market.

This device is well suited for:

  • using instant messengers if the user has small fingers and will accurately hit the letters;
  • for people who fundamentally like compact smartphones and this is the main criterion when choosing;
  • for a child who has this first smartphone;
  • for the music lover who is not picky about sound quality. You can install a 128 GB card on the device, which will fit a lot of tracks.

It's safe to say that everything in this smartphone is budget, but it works well and without brakes.
