Sounds on the keyboard. Sound volume control using hotkeys and from the command line. Keyboard shortcuts for adding sound on a laptop

I will look trite if I start telling you how convenient and pleasant it is to use hotkeys, how it saves time, etc. If you didn't come to the computer yesterday, you know that.

Ever since Linux came to my zoo park, I have a hell of a lot of fun being able to hang arbitrary keyboard shortcuts on anything, including volume controls. At one point, I wanted to have something similar on systems with Windows 7. The built-in tools of this OS will not help here, and if you do not have a multimedia keyboard, you will have to turn to third-party utilities for help. I suggest using the utility NirCmd, the main plus from this is the absence of programs constantly hanging in the memory.

Mute audio from speakers or headphones

There are several options for turning off or adjusting the sound, depending on what you want to accomplish. See below docs if they apply to what you are trying to disable. To mute the sound from speakers or headphones, you can mute the sound or turn off the volume completely.

The notification area of the taskbar, which looks like a speaker. To turn it off later, you can follow the same procedure. If you only want to turn off the video, sound file or other sound in programs, most programs include a configuration option to mute sound through the program or player you are using.

NirCmd is a very powerful and functional console utility, which allows you to automate and solve a lot of system tasks. One of the possibilities is to control the volume from command line... What the doctor ordered.

Downloading NirCmd, and unpack it into a folder. I have it traditionally c: \ cmdtools.

NirCmd command line options for volume control

In order to turn off / turn on all sounds, the following command is used:

You can also look for a mute or power off button on your computer or speakers as another alternative. Some headphones and earphones have a button on the cord that connects between the headphones and the computer. Pressing this button can mute the sound.

Some laptops have audio control buttons. If your laptop has buttons similar to the ones shown in the picture below, pressing the button with the speaker out will mute the laptop's speakers. In the small window that appears, drag the volume down to mute the sound. To turn it back on, you can follow the same procedure and drag the slider to your desired volume level.

C: \ cmdtools \ nircmd.exe mutesysvolume 2 At the first start, the sound is turned off, the next time it is turned on.

In order to increase or decrease the sound volume, Nircmd supports an option of the form:

Nircmd.exe changesysvolume X Here X is a negative or positive number from zero to 65535. A positive number increases the volume by X points, while -X decreases it accordingly. Everyone can choose the X value to their liking, I stopped at 2000.

Decrease the volume in software... If you only want to adjust a movie, sound file, or other volume of audio programs, most programs include a configuration option to adjust the volume with the program or player you are using. Find a sound icon or volume slider to adjust your sound settings. If you are playing a game, you may need to change your in-game audio settings to adjust the volume.

All computer speakers have a volume control that can be adjusted on the front of the speaker. Moving this knob to the left will decrease the main speaker volume. Some headphones and headsets have a volume control on a cord that connects between the headphones and your computer. Moving this knob in one of the available directions will mute the sound.

Thus, to control the volume level, I used commands of the form:

  • increase the volume
    c: \ cmdtools \ nircmd.exe changesysvolume 2000
  • turn down the volume
    c: \ cmdtools \ nircmd.exe changesysvolume -2000

All you need to know, we know, now we will assign global hotkeys to these commands.

Volume hotkeys

Operating systems Windows use the keyboard shortcuts assigned to shortcuts on the Start menu as global shortcuts. We will take advantage of this wonderful opportunity.

I have assigned and use the following keyboard shortcuts:

  • CTRL + ALT + Num +- increase the volume
  • CTRL + ALT + Num-- decrease volume
  • CTRL + ALT + Num /- disable or enable sound

As I said at the beginning of the article, the advantages of this approach are that there are no unnecessary applications hanging in memory, Nircmd works and closes without wasting system resources.

Controlling the volume of sounds from the keyboard is quite convenient. Are you using this opportunity? Tell us in the comments how and what utilities you use in this case - perhaps your version is much more practical than mine. Sharing experiences is a great thing, you know.

I think that modern man can no longer imagine life without technology. This is especially true for a personal computer. After all, with its help you can work, communicate and do much more.

To perform some operations, you can use both the mouse and the keyboard. The fact is that any keyboard has certain keyboard shortcuts (the so-called "hot keys") that allow you to execute some queries or commands.

For example, while simultaneously clamping "Win + R", you can carry out quick search on a personal computer, in other words, various combinations keys, you can perform the assigned tasks. They can also be used to adjust the volume level by personal computer, laptop or netbook.

Of course, there is a keyboard where you don't have to worry about memorizing a keyboard shortcut, since they have two buttons that are responsible for increasing or decreasing the sound. But, unfortunately, these buttons are not present on all keyboards.

It is also not always convenient to increase the volume. This is especially true for various games, when in order to perform this action you have to minimize the window or even leave it altogether. This article will discuss how to add sound on your computer using the keyboard.

How to increase the volume on PC using the keyboard

It is very convenient when the keyboard has special buttons for sound control, but not all of them have them. As developers are increasingly trying to reduce the number of keys. To do this, the functionality of the removed keys is distributed between those that remain, making them multi-function keys.

For example, some developers on the keys with the letter "F" make speaker icons or highlight the keys in a different color, which are responsible, in addition to the main specific function, for sound. For these purposes, some developers create certain combinations that are used to decrease or increase the volume.

So on small keyboards, it is possible to control the Winamp program and therefore when listening to audio recordings through it, if you need to make the sound quieter or louder, you can simultaneously hold down the "Shift + 2" or "Shif + 8" keys. Sometimes this combination is replaced by pressing Shift and the up or down arrows at the same time.

NirCmd utility

In addition, there is special utility called "NirCmd". Of course, you can use it to assign a convenient key combination to increase or decrease the volume, but these keys will not perform their functions in full-screen mode. You don't really use them during the game either. So I don’t think this is a good option. Although, as it is convenient for anyone.

Keyboard shortcuts for adding sound on a laptop

Laptops are pretty simple. Almost any keyboard has a key such as Fn. It is usually located in the lower left corner. On the top of the keyboard, where the F1 through F12 keys are located, two of them should have speaker icons.

Most often these are "F11 and F12" or "F7 and F8", and the speaker image can also be on the up or down arrow keys. Thus, to make the sound louder or, on the contrary, to reduce it, the "Fn" key is simultaneously pressed in combination with a key in the form of a speaker.

For example, holding "Fn + F11" on laptops Asus, the volume will decrease, and when using “Fn + F12”, the sound will increase.

How to add sound on a computer using the keyboard, summary

As you can see, increasing or decreasing the volume level on a personal computer, laptop or netbook using the keyboard is quite simple, and most importantly, it is very convenient in some situations.

However, depending on your device, operating system, hotkeys may differ from those described in the article. What to do? It's not all that difficult. Call up "help" by pressing F1, (look at your keys, look for the question icon if it's not on F1).

In the edit section, find a list of hotkeys for your device. Memorize or write down the keyboard shortcuts, or just the keys responsible for adjusting the volume on your personal computer. Good luck!
