Denpasar history

The former name of the city was Badung. For a long time, the country was under the patronage of the Dutch, thanks to whose help and protection the region remained independent throughout the 19th century. After the conflict between the Balinese and the Western authorities, the invaders decided to take power into their own hands. When the troops approached the palace of the rajah, a colony headed by the king and priests advanced to meet them. The procession stopped and the priest thrust a knife inlaid with precious stones into the heart of his master. This example was followed by all. Such suicides continued in other parts of the island. The Dutch were forced to leave the country under international pressure. In 1936 the city changed its name to Denpasar.

Denpasar

Cuisine and restaurants

Denpasar is a laid-back city with no lively nightlife, fancy restaurants or cafes. Nevertheless, you can enjoy the national cuisine in simple street restaurants - varungs. It serves nasi campur - boiled rice with various additives, nasi goreng - fried rice popular in Indonesia, soto ayam - spicy chicken soup with vegetables and many noodle dishes. The prices are quite low and the food is delicious.

After 10 pm, all restaurants close, but there is no need to despair: the Kumbasari night bazaar will not leave anyone hungry. The market is overflowing with stalls and open-air restaurants serving local dishes prepared with family recipes.

For shopping, you should go to the largest and most colorful market Pasar Badung. This is a three-storey brick building where trade is conducted around the clock. Dance performances and music shows are held here.

Entertainment and attractions of Denpasar

Denpasar translated from Balinese means "north of the Market". It is a calm green city with a rich cultural heritage. In the center of the city is the Puputan Square, where in 1906 the mass suicide of Raja Badung and his entourage was committed in front of the Dutch invaders. At the intersection of the highways stands a five-meter statue of Catur Muka, a four-faced guard that marks the exact position of the city center.

Near the square is the Bali Museum, built in 1910 by the Dutch. Thus, the population tried to prevent the theft of Balinese art and export abroad. The building houses the museums of anthropology and ethnography. The many pavilions contain unique household items of the ancient aborigines, ritual items, jewelry, handicrafts, costumes and dolls. The main building houses exhibits dating from the 2nd century BC. In the south pavilion, samples of sacred fabrics from the Tenganan village can be seen. The museum is open from 8.00 to 17.00 daily, except Friday.

The most striking and interesting building in the capital is Pura Maospahit, a temple built in the 14th century.

The temple was built of bricks and, most interestingly, without carvings and traditional decorations. Inside the temple there are several courtyards and an empty trunk of a tree, in which the alarm is sounded. In the middle courtyard there is a statue of the mythical eagle Garuda and the god of the wind.

The Taman Budaya Cultural Center is located in the eastern part of the city. Here you can visit an art gallery or see a colorful show - the Kecak ritual dance, the "dance of the monkeys". A big dance festival takes place here in June.

It is in the neighborhood with it that the Ngurah Rai International Airport is located, which receives flights from various countries of the world, including charters from Russia. The city is located a half-hour drive from the island's leading beach areas, so a vacation in Denpasar in 2020 is suitable for a change of scenery, architectural sightseeing, entertainment and shopping.

What to see and do in Denpasar

sights

Despite the active development of the city, the capital still retained its provincial features: rural houses are adjacent to modern buildings.

The city has a large number of attractions that are of interest to travelers.

Puputan Square

Puputan Square is located in the very center of the city. On it rises a monumental composition depicting a man, a woman and two children, all of them holding daggers.

This sculpture became a symbol of the events of the early 20th century, when the Rajah, along with his family, local nobility and servants, performed the cult rite of suicide in front of the conquerors from Holland. In Indonesian history, this event has been preserved under the name "Puputan in Badung". The Raja and the rest of the people put on white robes and gold ornaments, and then stabbed themselves with daggers. The Dutch conquerors were amazed at this sight, but rushed to remove the jewelry from the dying.

Jagatnath Palace

This palace has a relatively short history, as it was built in the 50s. last century.

It was erected in honor of Sang Hiyang Vidi, a god revered in Bali. The palace was built from an unusual material - coral. The main part of the structure rests on a turtle shell, which acts as a symbol of the globe. The palace is guarded by sculptures of snakes. Around the building are some episodes from the Mahabharata and Ramayana, which are ancient epics.

Bali Museum

In Denpasar, not far from the Jagatnath Palace, there is a beautiful museum complex. It was built at the beginning of the 20th century in order to prevent the export of valuable art objects from the city to America and Europe.

Initially, the museum was conceived as an anthropological and ethnographic complex, but after a while it became the main museum of the island, which contains all the most valuable works of art, historical relics and rarities. The museum includes many sites and pavilions where you can get acquainted with the architecture of the temples of the island, the way of life of local residents, their traditions. Museum opening hours: 8: 00-17: 00, closed on Fridays.

Pura maospahit

The most outstanding building in the capital is the temple, created in the 14th century. It is unique for its architecture: a brick building without traditional decorations and carvings. Inside the complex there are several courtyards and a hollow tree trunk, the alarm is beating against it.

Here, in the middle courtyard, there is a statue of a mythical creature - the eagle Garuda and the God of the wind.

Taman Budaya Center

The cultural center, located in the east of the capital, will be of interest to those who want to learn more about the history, culture and traditions of the island.

There is a permanent art gallery, as well as performances: the famous Kecak dance, the "dance of the monkeys".

Those who go on vacation to Denpasar in June will be lucky enough to see the dance festival taking place at the center.

Entertainment

Despite the fact that Denpasar is boring in terms of some entertainment events and nightlife, because the city finally freezes after 22:00, there is a number of entertainments suitable for the whole family.

Denpasar for children

If there are young tourists among the travelers, then the whole family will have fun in the Istana Anak Anak Indoor entertainment complex, on the territory of which there are many all kinds of attractions and playgrounds, and barbecue areas are also equipped. The center is open every day, except Mondays, from 10 am.

In addition, with your child, you can go on an excursion to the Botanical Garden. A large collection of orchids has become a decoration of the garden. On the territory of the complex, there are many cozy gazebos where you can relax and admire the beautiful flower compositions.

A trip to the island of Nusa Penida will allow you to take a break from the noisy streets of Denpasar. Interesting excursions to picturesque places are held here; there are also beautiful, uncrowded beaches, designed for a relaxing holiday, well suited, also for children.

It is considered to be the island of Bali. Denpasar is the capital of this province, although it can hardly be called a real paradise for tourists, nevertheless, many people love to spend their holidays there. Despite the fact that it is a lively and bustling city, there are still picturesque islands of tranquility surrounded by beautiful tropical greenery. There is also something to see here, since many architectural and historical sights are concentrated in this place of the island.

Description of the resort

Denpasar city is considered the largest settlement in Bali, as more than 700 thousand people live on its territory. It is located in the south of the island and is its cultural, political and commercial center.

On the territory of this resort there are many ancient buildings and magnificent architectural structures built during the reign of kings in Indonesia, including Bali. Denpasar also has many interesting centers and museums on its territory, where you can get acquainted with the ancient culture of the island and even see exhibits that have been preserved since the second century BC. Therefore, this Indonesian resort attracts art lovers and admirers of beautiful architecture.

In addition, the provincial capital is home to several picturesque parks and fragrant gardens where you can enjoy the peace and quiet and retreat from the commercial and business hustle and bustle of this city.

Climate

Tourists also love to come here, because it is always warm here. If you look at the Bali island on the map, you can see that it is located slightly south of the equator. Therefore, on its territory, including in the capital, a tropical, or, as it is also called, subequatorial climate reigns.

The weather almost never changes here. Thanks to this, Denpasar can receive tourists all year round. People can easily come here in any season, as the average annual temperature varies from +27 to +31 degrees Celsius. The water in the Indian Ocean is always like fresh milk and is never cooler than +24.

Although there is no clear distinction between wet and dry seasons on the territory of the island of Bali, Denpasar is still best viewed for recreation from March to October. During these months, there is practically no rainfall on its territory, the weather is fine and clear. The rainy season in the city begins in November and lasts until the end of February. Precipitation mainly falls at night or in the evening, so they also cannot interfere with daytime rest and visiting interesting excursions.

sights

Many tourists who come to other Denpasar visit at least once to look at the rich cultural heritage that is located on its territory.

For example, there is an anthropological museum built by the Dutch back in 1910. Its exposition includes unique household items of the ancient aborigines of this Indonesian island, as well as their accessories for various rituals, a variety of jewelry, dolls and outfits.

The building of this museum is located near Puputan Square, which is a historical heritage of this city. In 1906, a mass suicide of Raja Badung and his household, servants and all people close to him was committed there. This cult ceremony took place in front of the Dutch occupiers, who were greatly shocked by the sight they saw. Now there is a monument. He is a group of people with Malaysian daggers in their hands.

What else can you see?

The most striking and interesting building in this resort, according to many tourists, is the Pura Jagatnath temple, built in the middle of the last century. This shrine is made of white coral and stands on a turtle surrounded by dragons.

The resort is generally quite rich in various historical and religious monuments. For example, in the city there is an old temple built in the fourteenth century. Its architecture is simple, but unique in its own way. The building is made of bricks and has no decorations. In the courtyard of the temple there is a statue of the god of wind and a mythical eagle.

The entire cultural life of the capital is located in its eastern part. Here you can go on an excursion to an art gallery or enjoy an original performance - “Kecak ritual dance”. Whoever comes on vacation to this resort in June can still get to the big carnival, which takes place in the city at this time of the year.

Local kitchen

For those who love the nightlife, it is better to choose another Indonesian resort for their vacation than this one. There are no luxury clubs, discos or restaurants in Denpasar. But you can still taste the local cuisine. There are many street cafes in the city, or, as the locals call them, Varungs.

These establishments offer visitors to taste fried rice popular throughout Indonesia with various additives, spicy chicken soup with vegetables and a large number of all kinds of noodle dishes. The prices here are very democratic and will not hit your wallet. But it is worth considering that at 22:00 all cafes and small restaurants in the city are closed.

At the same time, a night bazaar opens for visitors, the counters of which are overflowing with stalls with delicious and exotic food, so none of the tourists is guaranteed to go hungry. Various shops and supermarkets are also open around the clock.

Beaches

In addition to seeing wonderful sights and trying exotic food, many tourists come here to enjoy swimming and sunbathing. If you look at the island of Bali on the map, you can see that it is washed by the waters of the Indian Ocean. But many are sure that there are absolutely no beaches in Denpasar, as it is located in the very middle of the province. However, this is a misconception, since this resort has access to the coast, and its entire beach industry is focused on Legian, which is ideal for extreme water sports.

You can also sunbathe in the vicinity of Denpasar by visiting Sanur, which is no more than five minutes drive away. Here you can have a great time on the white sands of this beach, as well as go diving or sknorling.

Tour prices

The cost of tours to this resort depends on the star rating of the hotel. For example, accommodation in a four-star hotel will cost about $ 2,500 for thirteen nights, while the price already includes flights from Moscow to Bali and back, as well as all-inclusive meals. If you take breakfast only, the voucher will cost about $ 1,700.

You can also organize your own holiday in this resort. To do this, first you need to book an air ticket for a plane departing from Moscow and arriving at the Indonesian airport (Denpasar), and also immediately purchase tickets for the return flight. You can easily find accommodation at the resort, thus saving several hundred dollars.

How to get there?

Only regular flights arrive in the abovementioned, additional charter flights are put in this direction from Russia exclusively during the Christmas holidays. The most profitable flight options are Singapore Airlines flights. They take off once every seven days on the Moscow-Bali route, stopping for refueling in Singapore. The journey takes about thirteen hours in total.

Some tourists still use Turkish airlines flying from Moscow to Denpasar via Istanbul and Singapore.

Useful information for vacationers

Tourists going on vacation to Bali should remember that there is a different time. Denpasar is ahead of Moscow by five hours in winter, and by four in summer, respectively.

The local currency is considered to be equal to ten American cents. Thus, one dollar can be exchanged for ten rupees. If the denomination of a note is below $ 100, then the currency can be changed at a reduced rate. The resort also accepts credit cards with a dollar bill.

Concerning mobile communications, it is better to immediately purchase a local SIM card upon arrival, the cost of which will not exceed fifty rupees.

If someone else is thinking about whether to spend their vacation in this Indonesian resort, then it is better to put your doubts aside and hit the road. There you can find everything your heart desires, from beautiful scenic landscapes to interesting historical and architectural sights.
